The new Google Photos Memories widget is rolling out to everyone

0

A little over a month ago, we learned that Google was bringing the same Google Photos Memories widget from iOS over to Android. This came a few days after seeing the Chrome widget make its way to Android. With the latest version of Google Photos, the company is now making this new “Your memories” widget available (h/t Android Police).

As you can see in the screenshots above, the widget only comes in a 2 x 2 size. It looks a bit awkward when placed on your Home Screen, but there’s a little secret here. When expanding the widget to change its size, the picture being displayed automatically changes to fill the widget. This removes the need for Google to implement different size options in the widget picker, and is a nice little bonus.

And since those screenshots above were from my Pixel 5 running the latest Android 12 beta, I figured I should check my Z Fold 2 to see if the widget was available. And yep. It’s available on both of these devices, and you can see the different sizes, including one that simply fills one entire Home Screen page.

It appears that while the widgets are part of version 5.52.0.387241369, Google still has to “flip the switch” on the server-side. So it may take some time before this new Memories widget is available in your widget picker. But in order to make sure that you can actually get it, download the latest Google Photos update.
