Over the past month, we’ve seen a couple of major devices launched powered by a MediaTek chipset. While Qualcomm still maintains its lead in the flagship smartphone market, MediaTek continues its upwards trend of reaching those levels. With the Dimensity 1200, MediaTek is getting ever-closer to matching up with the best Qualcomm chipsets. The OnePlus Nord 2 and Poco F3 GT feature this chipset, but now the company has its sights set on the tablet and computer market.
Today, MediaTek announced its new Kompanio 1300T chipset, built on a 6nm process and including a few key features. This octa-core CPU makes use of Arm Cortex-A78 cores paired with Cortex-A55 cores for both power and efficiency. For graphical performance, MediaTek is integrating the Arm Mali-G77 MC9 which features nine cores and primarily focuses on gaming.
As for features of this new Kompanio 1300T SoC, MediaTek is swinging for the fences. Not only is it compatible with sub-6GHz bands, but this processor is also capable of handling dual 5G SIM devices. And to help out with battery life, MediaTek is integrating its 5G UltraSave which “can automatically adjust power consumption based on a device’s network and stat transmission”. The end goal being to offer better battery life, while still enjoying the benefits of faster 5G connectivity.
MediaTek also announced several other key features of the Kompanio 1300T that users and OEMs will be able to take advantage of:
- Enhanced Color Display: Supports 2.5K displays with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This SoC can intelligently alter picture attributes such as brightness, sharpness, frame rate, and resolution for improve visual quality.
- Professional Imaging: Supports multi-camera designs with up to 108MP cameras. Capable of recording 4K HDR video, along with 4K 60fps video encoding and decoding.
- Intelligent Voice Recognition: Enabled AI-powered voice assistants along with “an ultra-low power voice on wake-up”.
- Boosted Gaming Experience: Combined with MediaTek’s HyperEngine 3.0, the 1300T offers gaming optimizations for things such as networks, performance, power efficiency, and more.
Although MediaTek didn’t announce any specific devices that will be powered by the Kompanio 1300T, the company did state that tablet computers “are expected to be announced in the third quarter of 2021. With this announcement, there’s a little glimmer of hope that we could see new tablets announced later in the year that can rival that of the Galaxy Tab series.
