How to add two-factor authentication to your Fitbit account

While we await the arrival of Google and Samsung’s upcoming wearable operating system, there are still plenty of users out there who use Fitbit for their smartwatch and fitness tracking needs. Fitbit offers a wide variety of wearables, all of which can help you to keep track of your fitness activity, receive notifications, and even be used as a way to make payments in the store.

How to add two-factor authentication to your Fitbit account

You can even go so far as to sign up for a Fitbit account and download the app without even owning a Fitbit. Regardless of whether you fall into this category or not, the fact remains that you’ll want to keep your data and information protected. Because of this, Fitbit has started rolling out two-factor authentication for its users. This adds another layer of security, making it more difficult for your account to be hacked in any fashion.

  1. Open the Fitbit app on your Android or iOS device.
  2. Tap the Today tab in the bottom toolbar.
  3. Tap on your Profile Picture.
  4. Select Account Settings.
  5. Tap Two Factor Authentication.
  6. Toggle Two Factor Authentication to the On position.
  7. Follow the on-screen prompts to enter your phone number.
  8. Enter the verification code from your Android phone once it arrives.
  9. Tap Confirm.
  10. Enter your Fitbit password.
  11. Tap Submit.
  12. Keep a record of your recovery code, and store it in a safe place.

The recovery code that is shown is only provided one time after you leave the final screen. Fitbit recommends putting this somewhere other than just the notes app on your phone. We would recommend using your password manager to store this information. Many password managers, such as 1Password, allow you to store notes or other pieces of information that aren’t necessarily passwords.

In the event that you try to set up Two Factor Authentication via the Fitbit app, and the option is not there, you’re not alone. Fitbit seems to be rolling this feature out in waves, so it may take some time before it arrives for your account. In the meantime and in an effort to keep your account secure, we recommend changing the password, as you should every few months for all of your accounts.
