It’s been two years, almost to the day, that the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones were released. These have taken the world by storm and are largely considered the best Bluetooth over-the-ear headphones, with noise cancellation, that money can buy. Fast forward to today, and Sony has surprised everyone by announcing the successor to the XM3, the WH-1000XM4.

Are there any major changes?
As you can see from the pictures and the promo video, there’s not much on the outside that will make these stand apart from the XM3. This just falls under the category of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, and we saw that Bose’s decision to change the design for the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 has really impacted sales and usability.
Where the fun comes in for the XM4 is in the noise cancellation technology, along with improved audio quality overall. You’ll find the same features as before with the ear-cup gestures, including the ability to use your voice assistant of choice with these headphones. Ambient noise comes back, and there’s also NFC for easy setup/pairing when you first unbox the XM4.
Battery life comes in at 30-hours, but you’ll be able to get up to five hours of listening time with just 10-minutes of charging via the USB-C port. We expected to see the improved audio quality and noise cancellation, but the really awesome feature is the ability to pair two Bluetooth devices with your XM4 at the same time. Being able to have your headphones paired up to both your computer and phone and the headphones automatically switch over to your phone when a call comes in and then back to your computer after the call is finished.
