The LG Velvet looks even better than the official photos

We all know that a smartphone is a lot more than the sum on its parts. The upcoming LG Velvet may not have all the flagship-tier components that we all crave, but a newly leaked video shows that the company is finally making design a high priority.

While renders, sketches and official photos of the LG Velvet have given us some insight into the phone’s design, this hands-on video of the phone shows that LG has really put in the effort this time around to make sure that the phone looks just as good, if not better than the competition.

The design of the phone is a dramatic departure from LG’s G and V series smartphones. Unlike its predecessors, the new Velvet sports an AMOLED display with a slight curve around the sides and even bezels at the top and bottom. They’re far from being the thinnest bezels we’ve seen on a smartphone, but that also means that the LG Velvet should have fewer issues with accidental touches on the side of the screen than the OnePlus 8 and newer Samsung devices.

The curved glass on the front transitions smoothly into the curved metal frame along the edges. The top and bottom edges appear to be nearly flat, similar to hat we saw with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 from last year. What’s most striking when compared to other smartphones these days is the design for the triple cameras on the back of the phone. Rather than throwing a metal ring around all of the camera lenses and creating a single raised module on the back of the phone, each lens has its own cutout on the back of the device with only the main 48MP camera featuring a metal ring which raises it slightly above the body of the phone. This design makes perfect sense since the main camera is typically the only one that needs a bit of extra distance between the lens and the sensor.

The video also revealed a few new details regarding the phone’s specifications which previously were not disclosed by LG. The LG Velvet will sport 8GB of RAM, IP68 dust and water resistance rating and a 16MP selfie camera. All the remaining details will be shared on May 7th (tomorrow) when LG officially unveils the phone in South Korea. LG hasn’t revealed if/when the phone will be making its way to Europe or the US, but the company plans to start selling the phone in it home country on May 15th.
