Samsung unveils its foldable phone called Galaxy Fold, coming April 26

0

Samsung has put to bed months of rumors surrounding its foldable smartphone and unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Fold. With a 4.6-inch display on the outside and a 7.3-inch unfolding display on the inside, the company has paired the new device with innovative software enhancements to improve the usability. But all this comes at a steep price of $1,980.

The new internal display is a product of eight years of engineering since the first flexible display prototype was showcased in 2011. The screen is constructed using a new polymer and results in a display that is 50 percent thinner than a traditional smartphone display. Further refining the design, Samsung has placed the fingerprint sensor on the side of the device to utilize the natural positioning of where your thumb rests when using the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung has built the device with durability in mind with a custom-built backbone hinge that holds the foldable display together. This hinge can also be customized in color and can be “folded hundreds of thousands of times” without noticing. It features a new design with multiple interlocking gears, which is hidden inside an engraved colored enclosure.

“We created Galaxy Fold for those that want to experience what a premium foldable device can do, beyond the limitations of a traditional smartphone.” – DJ Koh.

The company has introduced app continuity that will allow the app being used on the external display to be instantly transferred to the internal display for a larger viewing experience. This new feature sees apps automatically resume on a bigger canvas where you left off as the Galaxy Fold, well, folds. You’re also now able to multitask up to 3 apps at the same time to utilize the larger screen real-estate on the device.
