Ingenious LG patent shows us what its foldable phone might look like

0

The jury is still out on whether foldable phones are simply a novel feature, or if they hold great promise and could set a new standard as far as smartphone form factors are concerned. However, it has not stopped companies from trying to imagine what their foldable devices could look like.

In a patent discovered by LetsGoDigital, it has revealed LG’s take on a foldable smartphone. What makes this particular patent interesting is that previously, LG had patented foldable devices, but they were usually designed with the display on the inside of the device. This meant that when you “closed” it, you wouldn’t be able to access its display.

In this particular design, LG has put the display on the outside which is actually more true to the form of what many expect from a foldable smartphone these days. The patent also suggests that the phone will feature a unique hinge mechanism, which allows the device to expand and contract when the device is opened and closed to accommodate the flexible display which wraps around the outside of the device like a book sleeve.

It’s actually a rather clever idea, although moving parts does raise the possibility of it getting damaged. Thankfully though, this is only a patent which means that there is no guarantee that this could be the final design form factor that LG has chosen. Companies such as Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo and other companies are already working on foldable devices that are expected to debut this year, and we can’t wait to see how it might handle in day-to-day situations.
