Yesterday was a busy day for Mr. Andy Rubin, as his new company, Essential, announced its first products with the Essential Phone and Essential Home. Then, Rubin took to the stage at the Code Conference for an interview with Walt Mossberg where Rubin showed off the device and answered a few questions.
Throughout the interview, Mossberg posed a question to Rubin regarding when the device would be launched. Rubin’s reply was that he “wouldn’t take reservations if it wasn’t going to ship in, you know, 30 days or so.” This leaves us looking at the end of June for the Essential Phone to begin shipping to those who pre-ordered the device when it went live yesterday.
Additionally, Rubin shared that the Essential Phone and Home both have their own AI assistant running. However, the device is compatible with the likes of Apple’s Siri, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. This leaves the Essential devices open to choice which is something that Rubin is attempting to do with these devices.
There are some that are a bit skeptical of Rubin’s company making any real impact, simply due to the competition already in the market. Personally, I tend to agree with this train of thought but am extremely intrigued to see how everything with Essential plays out in the future.
If you want to get on board with the Essential Phone, you can still head over to the Essential web page and reserve your own device today for $699.
