Part of Xiaomi’s effort to break into the US market is the Xiaomi Mi Box, a cheaper Android TV alternative to Nvidia’s Shield TV mini-console. For $69 the Mi Box is supposed to be capable of streaming 4K content, but real world use show the device tends to lag more than it should when 4K streaming is enabled.
This is because the Xiaomi Mi Box defaults to the 4K setting when you plug it into a 4K TV. You can go into the settings and change the resolution on the box to display only 1080p content, which should significantly speed up the performance of your box. For those who wanted the Mi Box as a cheap way to get 4K streaming onto a 4K TV, this is probably not what you want to hear.
However, for those who got the Mi Box as an alternative to Roku, Chromecast Ultra, and Amazon Fire TV, changing the resolution setting should significantly speed up your experience with the device.
