Last year, there was an April Fools Joke making its rounds that turned your smartphone into a Game Boy, complete with the old-school controls. The adapter would allow you to throw in your favorite Game Boy game, connect your smartphone, then play to your hearts content. It seems that we really are fools, as the a company is turning this into reality.
Hyperkin was at the epicenter of this joke with the Smart Boy, and due to the overwhelming response, the company has actually started manufacturing the Smart Boy. At E3 this week, Hyperkin showed off the working prototype of the Smart Boy, complete with Pokemon Yellow, running on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
Originally, the joke was that the Smart Boy would only be coming to iPhone users, but now that this has become reality, there will be an Android version available.
There have been no mentions as to the cost associated with the Hyperkin Smart Boy, but we do know that it should be hitting the market this December. There is a Smart Boy Developer Kit that is up for pre-order through Hyperkin now, for just $59.99 which includes the following features:
- Open source serial app and firmware
- Compatible with GB and GBC cartridges
- Classic handheld-style tactile button set
- Designed for Android smartphones
- Double-sided micro USB port
I cannot tell you enthusiastically excited I am to be able to dust off Pokemon Red, Blue or Yellow and play them with my smartphone.
