Yesterday, it was discovered that the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X come with a secondary gesture for quick-launching the camera. The gesture involves a simple double twist of your wrist, as opposed to the standard double-tap power button gesture Google showed off at their Nexus event.
Well, it looks like the phones actually won’t ship with that feature. Folks who walked away with a Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X at the Indian Nexus launch the other day seem to have gotten an update to their units, and once the update was finished they noticed the feature was gone.
Qualcomm had even referenced the feature as part of the Snapdragon chipsets’ “Context Core,” but have since updated their post to note that the feature is being replaced by the double-tap method (and that the Context Core is now known as the Android Sensor Hub).
With Context Core, both the Nexus 5X and 6P cameras can launch with two twists of the user’s wrist and display notifications with a nudge.[UPDATE: The feature to launch the camera via double-twist of the device was replaced by double tap of the power key. The name Context Core has been changed to Android Sensor Hub.]
So there you have it. For those who got excited over this, we’re sad to say it’s time to reverse those feelings. Perhaps we can hold out hope that the development community can somehow revive this feature. If not, well, double tapping the power button is just as smooth and quick as anything else.
