Facebook Messenger could be adding games in the near future

Facebook Messenger officially became its own platform back in March, so we knew the social network geniuses over at Facebook were brainstorming new ways they could add more exciting features into the service. Right now the in-app apps (app-ception) are mostly related to chat like functions, things like adding GIFs, stickers, or video clips — things that enhance conversations.

We thought it was a great idea, even if we weren’t crazy about the idea of the app becoming more bloated than it already is. As reported by The Information, apparently adoption of these new Messenger apps hasn’t lived up to what Facebook (or developers) had hoped. Now it seems the company will look towards gaming to help pour some fuel on the fire and create added interest.

It makes sense too. Just look at all the casual games out there (Words with Friends, or Evil Apples). These are all games that heavily rely on social aspects to connect gamers with each other. Tapping into that could mean added revenue for developers looking to publish titles on Messenger. While the options are nearly endless, these games could face the same pitfalls as current Messenger apps which developers say are having trouble gaining exposure.

Perhaps a stand-alone Messenger app store is in our future?

  1. Facebook needs to stop while they are ahead before people uninstall the app all together. The stickers were cool, gif support was also cool but games? It’s a messaging app for crying out loud.

  2. To paraphrase Facebook when they separated Messenger out, “we wanted to make a more focused app,” now they want to put games in it? What a bunch of idiots.

  3. Every night when I pray, I think God for NOT giving me the desire to be a part of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blah blah. It must be so hard on people to keep up on the stupidity of it all across 2-3-4-5 different yet essentially the same platforms.

    1. I thank Cthulu every night for not having me want to use Instagram or Twitter. They’re so annoying and stupid. I only go on Facebook a few times a week and I only really view snaps on Snapchat.

  4. Cool Facebook keep adding more features and bloat to your chat app so you eventually need to branch off a third app for chat.

  5. Wow, facebook is developing a bloatware platform? All the things no one wants along with one feature people need, brilliant! When will phone companies and handset manufacturers catch on?

    1. Hopefully the only catching on that will be happening will be on Facebook’s part. They should stop endlessly frustrating their users with two separate apps that suck data and have features coming out (like games) that no one wants.
