Sony Xperia Z4 reportedly headed to Verizon, LG G Pad X 8.3 and HTC Desire 562 too

Every once in awhile, former tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) comes out of retirement to drop some leaks on us. Even if that gorgeous HTC One M9 render never came to fruition (we can dream), Blass is back with some info on a handful of Android devices that could be headed to Verizon later this year.

Now, the Sony Xperia Z4 had a quiet launch in Japan a few weeks back and even if it wasn’t the complete redesign we were hoping for (and what Sony desperately needs), that doesn’t mean the phone doesn’t offer a solid combination of hardware and utility. Here’s the quick specs sheet:

Sony Xperia Z4

  • 5.2-inch 1920 × 1080 display
  • Snapdragon 810 chipset (64-bit)
  • 20.7MP Exmor RS camera with 4K video recording
  • 5.1-megapixel wide-angle selfie cam
  • 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage w/ microSD slot
  • 2930mAh battery
  • 146 x 72 x 6.9mm, 144g
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop

According to @evleaks, the Sony Xperia Z4 will launch on Verizon at some point in the future and although there have been rumors of an even higher-end “Sony Xperia Z3 Neo,” there’s no reason to believe this tip refers to that. The Z4 is also said to be joined by the LG G Pad X 8.3, HTC Desire 562, and the Apple iPad Mini 4th Gen. No dates have been announced at this time.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Oh F.. Z4 on Verizon? Oh man… I want the G4. See, this is why LG should not lag 30+ days from announcement from actual USA release.

But assuming I wait.. will Verizon actually get a Z4. Or, like the Z3v, will it be some bastardized version of Z4 but not the Z4 specs I fall in love with. And also, it seems like the Z3 or Z3v didn’t get much dev love?

    1. Z3v has root and recovery
      Running AdAway and xposed now.

All you need. And if you keep reiterating the Z3v z3 relationship, I’ll keep replying :

Z3v is actually waterproof Unlike the well known lanyard flaw on Z3
      Z3v has Qi charging
Z3v has same processor as Z3
Z3v has a great camera with no pink spots

      1. My z3 was without issue of water resistance,
my z3 had no pink spot
I will check out that root exploit for them tho

        1. That’s very good but check the xda-developers.com z3 forum. Pink spot and water damaged phones was unfortunately not an isolated incident

        2. Exactly, no pink spots, dunked my phone in a pitcher of water for the F of it. Came out smiling.

      2. I know these things… well.. but that was not my greater overall point.

  2. If its waterproof I’ll be bypassing the G4, m9, and s6 for it.

    1. Why wouldn’t it be?

      1. Serious question? Uhh…. because just like the Sammy and the Galaxy removed it on the S6 after doing several versions with it. So your answer is… manufacturers make changes all of the time. Just like Sammy also deciding no longer to have a removable battery. So this is kind of an odd question to ask.

        1. Still not a good answer. I doubt Sony would remove one of its key features.

        2. Just one version of the Samsung Galaxy S line was waterproof: the S5.

The Galaxy S Active line has waterproof phones, but those are a separate line.

One of the Sony Xperia Z line’s signature features is the waterproof, just as Samsung’s Galaxy S line uses physical buttons as one of the distinguishing features of their platform.

        3. The phone’s already been announced in Japan and we all know that it’s waterproof. It’s odd hoping for it to be waterproof and talking about Samsung dropping it IMHO

  3. 5.0 lollipop? Pathetic…5.1 should be the focus by now.

    1. Naw… I am already seeing mentions of M – forget Lollipop, time to continue the fragmentation and move on to the next iteration altogether.

      1. Once things are working more smoothly I’m all over lollipop. Until then I’m rocking 4.4.4 and still enjoying life. I need a fully functional xposed/wanam on lollipop for my Note 4.

        1. 100% agree.. this is why on phones and computers and such, I can easily be 1-2 OS updates behind. Stability is WAY more critical to me than the latest and greatest nifty functions.

  4. Will the camera be better than the S6?

  5. Assuming both come to T-mobile before my Nexus 4 dies, I’m looking at Z4 and G4. Anyone know if the Z4 will have any of the issues that the M9 apparently did with the Snapdragon 810? Also is the 808 in the G4 very much worse?

  6. I’m sorry but how does this guy have any credibility left after the M9 ordeal?

  7. I like how they stuck with a 1080p display! Anything over that on a smartphone is overkill and just hurts performance

    1. No it doesn’t.

      1. You living on mars?? Of course it does. More pixels to push

        1. How laborious of a task is it to push around 200 more pixels? Its hardly noticeable, unless you’re a computer that’s task to find the most minute performance changes.

          1. OK, so they didn’t actually shut off a section of the screen, or replace the physical screen, but expected much better battery results? No. most of the power being drawn by the screen is for feeding the actual pixels. Emulating lower resolution while still keeping the entire display powered is not a valid test in terms of understanding how battery would have performed. For all we know this 1440 screen might be even more efficient than some 1080 screens out there, but the test is stupid.

          2. Sorry but I wasn’t talking about battery life I was talking about performance. My bro bought the g3 when it first came out and traded it in for something else cause when he played graphically intestine games it would studder badly. I figured it was the screen to blame

          3. Wow..game with intestines? That is pretty serious, biologically. Never heard of it.

          4. Sometimes a game just has guts

          5. Oh yeah by the way, the lg g3 was the 1st of its kind to offer a 2k display, the rules that you’re applying to 2k phones could also be said of 1080p phones of yesteryear. Thing is technology gets better, so don’t be so harsh on it.

  8. Didn’t mean to reply my bad.

    1. Shame on you.

  9. 5.2 inch screen is deal breaker. Need more screen.

  10. I don’t think I’ve encountered anyone using a Sony smartphone.

    1. I wish Sony was able to saturate the market as well as HTC, LG and Samsung.

      1. more popular in Europe

        1. Very much. I noticed that during my travels around there.

      2. Sony does terrible marketing in North America. No, wait: They don’t do any marketing at all. Don’t know why they’re so timid in the US. On specs and features, they can compete with the best of them. And Sony build quality and design is stellar. Battery life is better than most (including Samsung S6), Sony’s phone’s are waterproof as well. It’s a shame that the phones aren’t readily available in the US.

        1. I can’t figure it out myself. I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation somewhere why they don’t invest more in North America.

    2. As a man who lives in Detroit Michigan, I have owned two sony handsets. People don’t know Sony even makes phones until I whip mine out., well whipped its broke. Right now….

  11. Hope the Z4 Tablet follows the Z4 phone onto Verizon–or any network on the US (I’ll switch if necessary). PC World raved about the Z4 Tablet’s 2K screen and audio, as well as its super-thin design. Problem is, it’s not available anywhere (yet), not even in Europe. Sony has a problem distributing its stuff.

  12. really didn’t want to root the z3v, but come on Feb for lollipop and still don’t have it. Verizon received their test copy a month ago.
