A closer look at the LG G4’s improved camera [VIDEO]

One of the biggest focal points of the LG G4 event earlier today was the camera. The LG G3 had a very nice camera already, but LG didn’t want to stop there. They equipped the G4 with a 16MP camera, a f/1.8 sensor, and also a new “color spectrum” sensor. The G4 is also one of the first smartphones to take advantage of Lollipop’s new manual camera settings and RAW photos.

We were given demonstrations of a couple of the new camera features: low-light and the color sensor. For the low-light demonstration they used a Samsung Galaxy S6, iPhone 6, and LG G4. All three devices were attached to a box and pointed at a miniature dark scene. The G4 shows more detail when zoomed in and the colors are more vibrant, despite being a low-light photo.

The next demo is all about the color spectrum sensor. LG set up a Galaxy S6, a G4, and a G4 with the color sensor disabled, pointed at the same scene. Once again the colors look much more vibrant and true-to-life. The G4 with the sensor off still appears to take more vibrant photos than the Galaxy S6. You can also take advantage of the new manual controls to really get an exceptional photo.

All in all in looks like LG did a really nice job with the camera. People have been anointing the Galaxy S6 as “finally better than the iPhone,” so it should be interesting to see how the G4 stacks up. Are you impressed with the LG G4? We still don’t know pricing and availability, but we expect the typical $200 price tag on all carriers. Will you be picking one up?

Ever since I flipped open my first phone I've been obsessed with the devices. I've dabbled in other platforms, but Android is where I feel most at home.

  1. You had me at…. well, everything about it actually. I’m so in. Camera means a lot to me, more so than some other specs.

  2. I must say, I’m impressed!

  3. I’m not impressed. The night shot form the S6 looks better, and for the color testing, the LG camera was obviously optimized with the white balance setting for that shot, while the S6 was not.

    1. The night shot on the S6 looks more color accurate in this specific test which is in Auto mode. It could be an isolated incident or a product of the videography, but there is no denying the increased light available on the G4 brings out the shadows better than the other 2 phones. Besides, RAW fixes that, as well as a lot of other stuff easily.

  4. My next phone.. Its been a nice 4 year run sammy

  5. The wonders a couple strips of white tape can do to mask the brand & physical features of competitor phones…

    1. professional

  6. I don’t have sound so understand that before I make this comment. But based just on the videos alone, I’m not really impressed. The S6 appears to have more detail in the first video and the G4 looks like the G3 and G2 – a muddy mess in low-light (i.e. tons of post processing) when zoomed. Also, as the owner of both a S6 and iPhone 6, there’s no way the red “hue” is more accurate in that scenario.

Edit: Also, as nice as it might be in those scenarios, I want to know how it does in normal room lighting with fidgety kids. So far I’ve only used two phones that can *consistently* do well in those situations – and it wasn’t the G3 or G2, though both had admirable cameras overall.

    1. Argh! You didn’t tell us which two phones did well in those situations! Don’t leave us hanging bro.
The G2 was absolutely shocking at capturing kids in anything but 100% ideal conditions.

      1. It’s actually 4 phones, but they lump together IMHO… the iPhone 6/6+ and the S6/S6 Edge. I own the former in both of those pairs.

        1. Thanks, that’s great to hear. One of my biggest use cases is taking pics of my kids. Great to hear that you find the S6 good in this regard as I was thinking of buying it. I don’t quite trust LG to deliver the goods for taking photos of fidgety kids given my experience with the G2.

  7. You can’t really go by this, since LG set up the test. Need an independent comparison in real world scenarios.

  8. Why does it feel that the low light S6 photo is better than the G4? Sure, the colors are punchier and possibly more accurate in G4, but should those dimples have the highlights or are those artifacts from an incorrect/overzealous flash?

  9. Sold!

  10. The S6 looks much better in those shots.

  11. any idea if it has the same sony sensor?

Also i hope this lights a fire under samsung to improve their camera app

  12. Rob, what is your personal take on the camera and the demonstrations you saw? I know what the people in the video say but I would like to know your opinion.

  13. The G4 has the better detail and accurate color..since the color which the g4 captured were as in the box..since inside the box was a yellow light…thats why the persons that tested it are saying that the g4 is better since they have seen whats inside the box..the s6 colors are off..plus the g4 launches the camera way faster than the s6..
