Verizon makes it official: Nexus 6 launches online March 12th, in-store March 19th

It took Verizon an obnoxious amount of time to join the Nexus 6 party, but the nation’s largest carrier has finally set an official date. It’s March 12th — a date we’ve given you before thanks to trusty insiders — and it’ll largely be the same Nexus 6 available everywhere else (with exception to that sore thumb of a logo, of course). Note that it will only be available through Verizon’s online store tomorrow. Those hoping to run into a store to grab one will have to wait until March 19th.

This is Verizon’s first officially supported Nexus phone since the Galaxy Nexus debacle of 2011. That particular handset was marred by a couple of big shortcomings: bad battery life (likely due to the infancy of LTE) and Verizon’s lengthy upgrade schedule. We’re hoping things have changed all these years later and that they’ll be able to deliver the same quality Nexus experience that everyone else currently is.

Verizon’s Nexus 6 will cost you $249.99 with a new two-year activation or $27.08 per month for 24 months with Verizon Edge. It’ll come with support for Advanced Calling 1.0 out of the box thanks to it shipping with Android 5.1 Lollipop — perhaps the update’s arrival was Verizon’s sole reason for delaying their launch.

Oh, and if you buy one before the month is over you’ll even get 6 free months of Google Play Music service. Not bad at all. Take the plunge online starting tomorrow.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. No thanks, never again after having the Galaxy Nexus with them.

    1. u are going back too far to judge them on this one….I had that too but this phone is FAR superior in any fathomable way =)

    2. I have a N6 and have been using it on VZW since January. Relax. Move on and let the past go! :)

      1. I’m with you….100%

        1. Ditto.

      2. I did that by moving onto T-Mobile and haven’t looked back since.

    3. I bought the GNex on launch day, but always ran a custom rom. I didn’t have to wait on Verizon, and I was just happy to have a phone with an unlocked bootloader and a support from the dev community. But I can see where VZW would have left a bitter taste in your mouth if you had to wait for their updates.

  2. Remind me again when the Nexus 6 was launched by everyone else?

    1. seems forever ago….I wonder why its taken so long??

      1. They had “extensive testing” to do.

Makes you wonder, part of the whole Nexus hype – and hype it is IMHO – is the quick and immediate release and updates. This does not bode well for VZW.

        1. I totally agree, its all hype. This is my first Nexus device and I’m not so impressed. It just seems….plain-Jane and unloved. I am on AT&T and got my phone right at launch when I pre-ordered it. I really should have gone to the dark side and bought a Note 4. I cant imagine what VZW has had to do to test anything….you put the sim in, it works. WOO HOO!

          1. Part of the concept of the Nexus is most immediate, quick updates. BUT that is wholly dependant on the carrier and does not always pan out. Same with the clean Google experience. I have found, with root, I have gotten ROMS faster and quicker than Nexus that came with “clean” Google experience. My point is, you can buy into the Nexus hype and maybe the carrier will make that happen or maybe they will lag. Or, you can buy *almost* any phone you want, root it and ROM it and beat any Nexus & carrier timeline for releases and updates and new features since someone at XDA will blow the doors off any Nexus release timeline.

          2. agreed. Its so easy to get flash happy though in my opinion. I’m really crossing my fingers that AT&T does not delay 5.1 for too long….I was assuming they would get it out before VZW launched. Maybe they will get it out before they are delivered at least?? here is too hoping….if not, XDA it is!

        2. By “extensive testing” they refer to the great efforts on their part to figure out how big and where to place their logo.

  3. I’ve got one…fantastic phone,you won’t be disappointed!!

  4. So, I did the calculations, and it only comes out to be $649.99. Does this mean, that they are only selling the 32gb version? What happened to the 64gb version? Thanks Verizon, but NO THANKS!

  5. What’s sux is after all the wait you’d figure just maybe VZW would pull the rabbit outta the hat & have the white version @ least in 32GB but…..Nope!

  6. It wouldn’t surprise me if Verizon forced the delay until 5.1 was ready. I’m so sick of all the bugs in 5.0.2 on my Nexus 5 that I’ve considered switching to…*gasp*…and iPhone.

    1. An iphone? I have a nexus 5 on a custom rom with no issues. Unsure what problems your having

  7. About time.. My Nexus 6 on Verizon was feeling lonely

  8. Too little…too late.
    Waiting on the S6Edge

  9. Too big. Need an updated Nexus 5.

  10. I’ve got a question: Does the VZW N6 have special software to use VoLTE or will any old N6 on 5.1 with a VZW sim card use VoLTE? I’m curious since more and more “GSM” phones launch supporting atleast some of VZW’s 4G frequencies. It would be nice to just pop in a Verizon sim and use it.

    1. VoLTE support is built into Android 5.1, as there are APIs that allow the phone to access advanced network features. T-Mobile and Verizon VoLTE on the N6 are confirmed as working on 5.1.

There’s no special software. It’s standardized.

      1. Thanks for educating me. I think this is great news for Android users on Verizon’s network!

  11. Wonder if this will stop my Nexus 6 from showing up as an unrecognized device in Verizon’s system? Not that it affects anything, but just curious how they’re going to handle whitelisting devices purchased directly through the Google store.

  12. You know something is seriously wrong when the Verizon Nexus 6 gets 5.1 before the Google Nexus 6.

  13. I just want my visual voicemail back. When Verizon finally releases their N6 I can’t wait for someone to pull the apk

  14. Only a 32GB option, with no ability to add additional storage via micro-usb? Thanks but no thanks. Especially for the incredibly disgusting price of 649.00. Seriously, only a moron would buy this. And really, if you’re a moron, shouldn’t you be buying apple icrap?
