Android Lollipop for HTC One M8 and M7 Google Play Edition finally rolling out (for realsies)

After a couple of heartbreaking delays, owners of the Google Play Edition of the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7can finally enjoy a taste of Android 5.0 Lollipop. The upgrade is headed out to handsets over-the-air, so you’ll need a solid connection and a juiced up battery to ensure a successful upgrade.

The version coming in is Android 5.0.1, which Google started rolling out to Nexus handsets earlier in the week. That HTC leapfrogged the vanilla 5.0 upgrade seems to confirm that the company was waiting on some last minute bug fixes that Google wanted to clean up to shore up the otherwise solid Lollipop experience.

As far as what to expect, we imagine it’s strictly Android 5.0 Lollipop without much else smearing the experience. Of course, a bit of added support for that IR blaster and the extra depth information camera on the rear is likely to be in tow, though it should be almost like owning a Nexus device otherwise. Head to your settings menu and hit About Phone > System Update to get started.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. STILL NO LOLLIPOP FOR 2013 N7. Wtf Google. Nexus patches are supposed to come before GPE ones. How come these jokers are already getting 5.0.1 when we’re still on 4.4.4?!

    1. Have you tried the factory image that was released a while ago? I’ve had it installed with no problem since. It could last you until it drops.

      1. The Factory Image requires a device wipe.

Android Police has all the OTA zip files, which can be installed with ADB without a device wipe.

    2. They stopped the upgrade because of a video playback bug fixed in 5.0.1. I would expect it to resume shortly.

At least, if you’re on the WiFi model. No clue what the holdup is on LTE.

    3. Lollipop kills the N7. Something is messed up. I bought a $40 RCA Tablet for nephew’s xmas gift and it runs much smoother than my N7. Almost all apps crash on the N7, even after FDR. Not sure why anyone would want this. Now have to use my laptop.

      1. 2012 or 2013? I know several people with a 2012 who have it but nobody else I know with a 2013 has received it yet.

        1. 2012. Wish I did not have it. Hopefully they fix whatever is the problem before I need to update S5, S4 and Moto X.

  2. Any way to sideload this on a VZW M8??

    1. There are several GPE based roms on XDA. Once they get updated to Lollipop, they’ll be pretty similar.

  3. So if I download the OTA file how do I flash it manually? Is it not like old days where I can download it directly from my phone then go to recovery and flash it there without ADB?

  4. Ahhhh getting Lollipop 5.0.1 is sooooo worth the 2 hours it took to convert my T-Mobile M8 into a full GPE.

  5. I installed the M8 GPE OTA last night and 5.0.1 seems to work very nicely, with the following notes:
    1) I lost root. Grr. I use root to lock the phone when I put it in my pocket (I keep an NFC card there to make sure it powers off.)
    2) Widgetlocker doesn’t protect against the Home button and Notification actions any more. This morning, when I stopped the car, I found that the flashlight was on.
So until these bugs are sorted, I’m guessing my battery life is going to be, ahem, unpredictable. At least my pocket will stay warm this winter.
(Update: got root back and NFC locking, discovered ACR doesn’t work any more.)
