Heads up, HTC One X+ owners on AT&T: the American carrier has approved the upgrade to Android 4.2.2 (and HTC Sense 5) as of yesterday. That news was made clear by HTC’s executive director of product manager Mo Versi, who was even confident enough to give folks an ETA for the update to begin rolling out:

AT&T One X+ users – We have received technical acceptance from AT&T today. Expect the OTA update to OS 4.2.2 + Sense 5 later this week.

Unfortunately, the good news ends there. Earlier this week, HTC confirmed that the HTC One X and HTC One X+ would not be upgraded past Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, meaning dreams of Android 4.3 or Android 4.4 were definitely shattered. It’s sad, but the devices are a bit old at this point, and HTC is about to be on their second generation of devices (the rumored HTC M8 launching later this year) since they’ve been available.

Of course, those who are handy with a root procedure or two shouldn’t have much trouble getting onto newer versions of Android if they really want it. But if you’re not that person, you’ll probably want to look into your upgrade options and settle for grabbing yourself a new smartphone soon. We’ll be looking out for word on when the OTA rollout actually begins.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Until carriers are forced to stop adding their bloatware to phones and updates to phones are handled the same way as updates to PC’s, mostly seamlessly and as soon as available. The fragmentation and this years late non-sense will continue.

    1. non-sense? O_o

      1. Yes, non-sense as in foolishness, ridiculousness,… 4.2.2 is what? A 2 year old, almost, update? Maybe a bit less. It’s non-sense that it takes so damn long to get updates. Not to be confused with the HTC Sense UI. All carrier added UI’s are non-sense and ridiculous.

        1. Yes it’s spelled nonsense… no hyphen needed which is why I was confused. Now if you meant non-sense meaning without htc sense then it would’ve been witty and hilarious.

        2. 4.2.2 is 11 months old.

          1. Ok. It’s newer than I thought. Still ridiculous that it takes so long.

    2. There is an international version.

Meaning carriers have nothing to do with fragmentation.

It’s the same device. If you want the update *now*, then you go get it, or you wait until carriers give their approval for your region.

Fragmentation would be 4.5 comes out and an OEM doesn’t have 4.5 out for the device, regardless of the region the device is in.

Also, I prefer OTA updates. iOS users have to wait until they get home on THEIR computer to update their phones. Android users just update on the fly. Though the drawback is waiting until it gets to you.

      Pros and cons.
      Hmm…

      1. not all iOS users, I know when the iOS 7 update came out, I was able to download it over WiFi at work. Whether that process is different from the cellphones, not sure… but I highly doubt its different.

  2. Well I guess you could say that…
    that’s One last upgrade
    Yeaaaaaaaa

    1. *hands over Pun Awards trophy*

  3. When can the og hTC ONE X get sense 5 and 4.2.2!?

    1. It’s coming soon. Still waiting on AT&T.

  4. Lol I have this phone and my bootloader wad unlocked through HTC dev so I just flashed the Rom.from xda it was released about 2 months ago and everything works amazing. Better late than never I guess but this update nonsense must change. Whatsecer worse most users are left in the dark on the update schedule from both carriers and oem’s. If buyers knew the projections on update timetable it would at least calm so of our concerns.

    1. “users are left in the dark on the update schedule”

HTC US has put an updates status page up now, showing where each phone is in the development and QA process.

  5. What about for me and My evo 4g lte on sprint. you said 4.3 and sense 5 end of 2013 its now mid january? whaddup widdat?

  6. @chad I know about the update schedule on htc’s page but that site rarely has info on carrier specific versions and the carriers are horrible about communicating the update phase status…they need to do a better job of that I think itspart of good customer service.

  7. Just got an OTA update from AT&T for HTC One X+, not 4.2.2 – but a good sign?
    Android 4.1.1
    Sense 4+
    SW Number 1.19.502.3 710RD

    1. Me too. It wasn’t available the day before. Maybe it’s necessary to prep the phone for 4.2.2?

      1. Same here. It was exciting for a second. Hopefully it’s a prelude to the real update. Anyone else having this experience?

    2. I also got an OTA update, about 13 megs worth, but can’t really tell what was updated? My wife’s phone updated to 4.3 but its a Gal 3. Here’s hoping that there is more to come !!!
SO still 4.1.1 with Sense 4+ too

    3. Same here. Just got an update, but afterwards, still at HTC Sense version 4+ and Android 4.1.1…

  8. HTC One X+ has never been UGH, until now. The update is crap. Phone has gone haywire. Text messages coming through 15+ times a piece, calls are dropped due to phone going into Airplane mode, phone just shutting off when it wants, Bluetooth won’t stay connected without me turning it off and on and when you turn Bluetooth off it turns my phone off. I am very unhappy.
