HTC and Google gave Google Play Edition HTC One owners something great to look forward to when they wake up this morning — Android 4.4 KitKat! The code drop happened at some point early this morning, and now the official rollout is going out over-the-air for all to download. All you’ll need is a WiFi connection and a decently charged battery. From there, a quick trip to the settings menu should get you on your way.

If, for whatever reason, you can’t find the OTA, you can always download and install the upgrade manually. It’s as simple as downloading this update package to the root directory of your phone’s internal storage and hitting the “update from phone storage” option in recovery. You can also do it over ADB if you prefer to do things the geeky way.

The upgrade clocks in at just over 300 megabytes, so go pop some popcorn and grab a refreshing drink while you wait for the entirety of this big puppy to be downloaded.

PS: alongside the aforementioned open-source code push for the HTC One GPe, the Samsung Galaxy S4 GPe also got its open-source code drop for KitKat. You can find that at Samsung’s site here. No word on when we can expect an OTA, but we reckon it won’t be far behind.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Speaking about android 4.4, how many nexus 4 owners have it? I have been waiting for the update quite a while now. I need to know. Or is the kitkat update limited to USA?

    1. Definitely not only USA. My mother has it here in Canada as of 3 days ago.

      1. Thank you.

    2. Not in the UK either…very annoying that HTC may have it before my Nexus 4. I will probably end up changing my mind with regard to Nexus products.

      1. I guess it is limited to the american continent.
        Signed: Norwegian.

        1. See my post above where I replied to Kk Rech regarding downloading the factory image.

      2. What difference would be made if you had the HTC One over the Nexus 4? Both updates have been pushed out. You’re making it seem like Google isn’t updating the Nexus 4.

It will take time to reach you, wait your turn. LoL!!

This is why I use custom ROMs. Don’t nobody got time to be waiting for their update. =.P

        1. because Nexus is supposed to receive update before any other manufactures? Google is just BSing everyone to be honest…they claim old devices can run 4.4, technically true, but no manufacture will update their 3 year old phone, so Google releases 4.4 for everyone at the same time….speaking of avoiding fragmentation

          1. Seriously. That’s ridiculous.
Whatever happened to patience! People these days.

      3. You do know that you can just download the factory image from Google and flash it to 4.4 using the included batch file. I did that with my Nexus 7.

Here you go, you can thank me later:
        https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#occam

Just make sure to backup everything on your phone if you haven’t already and don’t know how to edit the adb/fastboot commands in the batch as it might wipe all your data since it does a factory reset.

      4. I’m in Uk and got my download for 4.4 2 days ago!

        1. I got mine last night, thanks!

    3. Already on my Nexus 4. All the way from Mexico .

      1. Thank you

  2. flashed this in CWM, and ended up with an error. When it starts up there is an completely cyan blue screen, and the device does not respond to any buttons

    1. Had the same issue with TWRP. Had to restore from backup. Thank goodness I actually did that right before attempting the update.

      1. well, i didnt -.-* too exited, and forgot to be careful…

        1. That’s what I did last time and lost everything. I learned the hard way. Stupid BSOD…

          1. phew, got it back to stock android. anyone got a guide to manually installing the update?

          2. How did you get it back? I can’t even get the RUU to install…

          3. im guessing you have converted yours? if you have just follow the part about flashing the rom in this guide:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358781
Then use this little guide to flash the 4.4 OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47830251&postcount=3039
            root is coming soon ;)

          4. Thanks, I was forgetting to go into OEM boot loader lol. Also what happened the first time was that I got a bad download which caused the blue screen. I got it all fixed and working on 4.4 lol. Thanks for your help!

    2. This is for the un-rooted/stock recovery.. Not CWM/TWRP.. You’ll have to either A. Reload the unrooted GPE RUU to your phone or B. Wait until someone packages this as a ROM to use with CWM/TWRP.

    3. After two days of messing with it and finally getting it, here are the steps:

      1. Download 4.4 OTA and put it somewhere on your phone (I put mine in the Download folder).

      2. Flash stock recovery (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2363677)

      3. Reboot into recovery (VOLUME DOWN + POWER). The android with the spinning belly will come on and then change to him on his back with the red triangle. THIS IS NORMAL. When that happens, press the VOLUME UP button and then the POWER button. This will open the stock recovery options.

      4. Select APPLY FROM PHONE STORAGE and then find the zip file you put on the phone from step 1.

      5. Follow the instructions. It will reboot 3 or 4 times and then you’ll have 4.4 when it’s all done.

  3. Anyone know how to get S-Off on my ONE ? Its on bootloader 1.55 I heard its impossible, but XDA is working on it.

    1. Search for something called rumrunner on xda, its a lifesaver! It helps if your phone is not rooted though. While it should work, its more likely to give you issues.

    2. I ran into the same issue with 1.55 until I found Rumrunner which worked a treat.

  4. I’m in the UK and have received 4.4 on nexus 4. In not rooted or anything. I did clear the data on Google services and the update appeared immediately.

  5. Both the HTC One and Galaxy S4 Google Play Editions received their initial OTA push today.
According to Google’s previous statements, that means that roughly 1% of owners will receive the OTA beginning today. Google has previously said that updates go out to roughly 1% on the first push, then 25%, 50%, and 100% over roughly two weeks.

      1. It works, but is not advised. Read the mentioned article in the comment above.

        1. Huh? I read the article. Maybe you were responding to someone else.

          1. Strange. The comment I was replying to appears to have vanished. I was talking about not clearing Google Services Framework’s data because it messes with Google services (notifications etc) operating on the device.

    2. How do you know the GS4GE OTA started today as well?
