The EVO 3D saved someone’s life, so HTC’s sending them a brand new HTC One

htc evo 3d stops bullet

In case you haven’t heard, a Florida man’s life was saved from a gunshot because his HTC EVO 3D was sitting inside his shirt pocket. Never mind the fact that he is still carrying an HTC EVO 3D after two long years — it saved his life! Perhaps that’ll get the phone half a brownie point on our worst Android phones of all time list.

Unfortunately, that does mean the man’s phone has been destroyed forever, but fret not — HTC is going to hook him up with a brand new HTC One, complete with a smorgasbord of accessories to help protect his new bullet proof breast plate. I can’t say I’m mad at HTC for using this opportunity to get some free positive press, but let’s just hope everyone doesn’t start thinking a phone is good protection for various other dangers of the world.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Just a half inch off and that dude is dead. Thank goodness for 4.3+ inch phones! (and HTC’s impressive build quality)

    1. True that. An apple phone and it would have passed just to the side of the screen and this would be a very different story.

      1. It’s called thinovation xD

Okay, I shouldn’t be making these jokes I like thin phones (though fatness for battery is very welcome.

  2. this isn’t the first time an HTC has been used as personal body armor. There’s an old story about some dude’s Incredible stopping a bullet in Atlanta.

    1. It was an Evo 4G, not the Incredible.

  3. incredible.
    just,
    incredible.

    1. Nope, Evo 3d3d.

    2. very (HTC) incredible.

  4. If only he was wise enough to carry a Nokia. The bullet would have ricocheted back a the shooter and taken him down with increased velocity.

    1. I like Nokia a bit, but it isn’t as strong as people say.

      1. lol
        its a joke

        1. I see what you did there

  5. Coolest story ever.

  6. I’m going to build a bulletproof smartphone vest

  7. Moral of the story is don’t carry an HTC in public unless you want to get shot . . .

    1. Go grab an HTC phone real quick…

    2. Probably not bud. I don’t recall him being robbed for his phone.

  8. Half life 3.. wait. i am wrong here,,

  9. I think this is the 2nd time that an hTC phone has stopped an bullet from killing someone. Love hTC!

  10. man this guy gets saved by his smartphone. and then get a new smartphone for free. I don’t get shot and i have to pay for a phone…. lol

    1. If you want, I can shoot you and maybe you’ll also get a free phone

      1. No, he probably has a Huawei phone. If you shoot him, the bullet will ricochet and tear into you.

      2. Wait till my note 3 breaks bor is at least a year old :). Also can we use a paintball gun not a real one?

  11. You can’t question the build quality of HTC products now

    1. HTC Build Quality always been amazing noting like it

  12. wow , this guy got very very lucky indeed!!!

  13. Is the mug a limited edition or is there a mass production version available out there to purchase?

    1. It’s a getting shot in the chest limited edition mug.

  14. Best way to get a free upgrade!

    1. Just don’t try it with a Samsung!

      1. Yeah, being saved from a BB gun wouldn’t sound all that great.

        1. Even then, the phone might shatter and lodge some fragments into your chest.

          1. And that’s exactly the moment you want to go to HTC and RDJ to save your life

      2. with Samsung you will die and your phone would be in 200 pieces

  15. HTC = High Tech Chest-plate

  16. The first EVO stopped a bullet, now the 3D, I need to get a shirt with a pocket so I can put my EVO LTE in for protection lol

    1. With my luck, the bullet will hit the plastic top half and I’ll be screwed.

  17. This is the REAL Iron Man. Clearly Robert Downey Jr. is an overpaid actor.

  18. I don’t want to be in that guy’s shoes. I rather take paying $400-$600 for a new phone than a near death experience any day of the week.

  19. There’s always some story of a shirt pocket phone saving someone’s life.

    *makes to-do list*
1.) Buy shirts with shirt pockets.
2.) Start keeping phone in shirt pocket.

That extra bit of protection can’t hurt!

but seriously, I’m glad this guy managed to dodge that bullet. Must have been terrifying. And to all of the people calling him lucky for getting a new phone… really?!

    1. He didn’t really dodge it so much as deflect it…

  20. Well now Apple is going to sue HTC for having the patent on being bullet proof…lol!

  21. Somebody must have SHOT him a text! Ah ha!

    1. Sticks and stones will break his bones(bullets) but words can never hurt him(texts).

  22. Man I want to get shot at and get a free phone
    /sarcasm

  23. Nice

  24. HTC should make a ad based on this

  25. Classy gesture HTC…I LOVED my Thunderbolt…and would love an HTC ONE if your feeling extra generous!!

    1. The Thunderbolt was shot once you removed it from it’s package…totally different.

  26. So yeah. I just patented a shirt design that has wall to wall pockets. It’s called the HT-CShirt. You’ll also be able to make multiple calls at once.

  27. Next time he gets shot at, the bullet will simply ricochet and hit the shooter because of the curved back. But if the shooter also has one in his pocket then it will just go back and forth till one of them moves. Ultimate Russian roulette.

  28. That’s what you call a life changing 3d experience

  29. Happilly still using my Evo3D running AOKP 4.2.2. Fast and smooth, does everything I need it too. Of course if it was still packing Sense this would be a different post.

    1. And if HTC offered you a free “One”?

  30. I will place my phone in the shirt pocket from now on.

    1. i rather risk my life before my phone’s jajaja

  31. I don’t see a problem with the way this was handled. It’s a great story with a great ending. Nice soap box though :)

  32. Doesn’t Apple have an app for that? Stopping bullets?

  33. I feel safer knowing that….my gf has one lol

  34. But now he can’t watch Spiderman in 3D!!!

  35. Talk about build quality!

  36. Pretty crazy. I the law enforcement field, we see all kinds of saves. I have seen badges, belt buckles, and even a small flashlight save officers from bullets.

As crazy as this story sounds, this probably really did save this guy’s life. The size and depth of the penetration on the phone would appear to be a .22 caliber round. Anyone who knows anything about ammunition and shootings knows that .22 calibers are notorious for entering the body and bouncing around inside the chest from rib to rib etc. Any round larger than a .22 would have gone straight through the phone.

Time to buy a lottery ticket.

  37. Apple doesn’t have an app for that

  38. They need to start ballistic testing phones and give them a rating.

  39. HTC doesn’t need anymore press about their brick phones.

  40. This happened right down the street from my house.
