We’ve seen the names for upcoming devices first revealed in trademark filings. It was only a short time ago when plans for a Samsung smartwatch were still just a rumor. After doing some snooping around, we discovered a Samsung trademark filing for the “Gear”. Turns out, we had uncovered the official name for what would eventually become Sammy’s first Android smartwatch.

Today we did some more digging and a little doozy of a trademark turned up. Motorola has just filed a trademark for a mysterious device named the “Moto G”.  If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s one that’s been heard whispered in Android forums and back alleys for almost as long as the Moto X. While Motorola’s description of the product is broad — it could be anything from a smartphone, to an external charger, or something in between — we’ve heard of an upcoming Motorola device on the horizon, and yes, the “Moto G” was a title thrown around in reference to it.

Now here comes the gross speculation: while Motorola seems to have their hands full with the recently released Moto X, Droid Ultra, and Droid Maxx — the Moto G could be the official name for the X once/if it arrives on Google Play running a stock Android experience. “G” for Google…. get it? Other than that, we’re out of ideas. Now it’s your turn. What do you think the Moto G could possibly be?

UPDATE

Our friends at Droid-Life were able to add a little credence to the rumor that the Moto G could be an upcoming handset. According to them, a Verizon Wireless rep recently tipped them off about a device they heard would be coming soon to the carrier. The name? Moto G. The plot thickens…

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. From what I have heard its the Moto Nexus that Taylor Wimberly mentioned a while back…

  2. I would guess its their lower spec/less expensive entry level phone.

    1. That’s what I thought initially, but according to rumors — and they’re ALWAYS right ;) — it could be the Google Play edition Moto X.

      1. This sounds very plausible.

      2. Was thinking the same…

      3. Moto G Ultra FTW

  3. Moto “Nexus” incoming, queue the my body is ready memes. Go.

  4. The Moto G? Well, I could be wrong, but I believe Moto G was an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era..

  5. Would hope it is a new Moto Tablet.

  6. I’m hoping its a customizable tablet. The moto x in tablet size would be pretty amazing… With better specs of course and no stupid exclusive deal with Att.

  7. My sources tell me that it’s a new Wi-Fi Access Point technology , and the complete name is Moto G Spot .

    1. Nailed it!

      1. It pays to have reliable sources

    2. Uh oh! Guys, you better not lose it. You’ll never hear the end of it from your significant other that you can’t find their G Spot.

  8. Moto Gear.. sounds like a smart watch? XD

  9. If only it were a beefed up Moto X that is also highly customizable and made in the U.S.

That might pull me away from my One. Maybe.

  10. An 8 inch tablet with a 2560 x 1600 resolution would be baller status. With a s800 dual core x8(2) setup. (So instead of the s600 dual core it has the s800 dual core plus all the additional cores in the moto x). But that’s just dreaming… It will probably be a watch

  11. I don’t know why this Moto X “Google Edition” idea keeps getting thrown around. The Moto X’s software is literally stock AOSP with some feature additions like Touchless Control and Active Display. If you want a Google Edition, then go buy a Moto X and turn off those features.

    1. But what about Android 4.3 and soon Android 4.4 KitKat? A Google edition would get all those updates super quick instead of being stuck on 4.2.2.

      1. Who’s saying Moto won’t be quick about it? They may be skipping 4.3 since 4.4 is around the corner (I’d like to know which corner so I can go around it now…) and we’ll see the update soon. :)

  12. A pure android phone would be nice, Chris, wouldn’t it?

    1. The Moto X is stock Android with a few minor additions. Those additions actually complement stock Android instead of bastardize it like other OEMs do. I’m fin with what Motorola has done with the X. It’s an amazing phone. That said, a Google Experience phone would mean much faster updates instead of being on 4.2.2 still.

    2. For quick updates, yes. ;)

  13. If only the G was for Global

  14. In other words, motorola trademarked…something. And when whatever it is gets announced, you will write about how you discovered it first…even though you have absolutely no idea what(if anything) you discovered.
    gotcha.

  15. It ain’t nuthin’ but a G thang?

  16. Moto (G)arbage

  17. “G” is patented to apple, apple will sue motorola again

  18. If G is patented to any company symbol then Motorola should not use it.Otherwise it will be gonna a court battle !!!

    patent registration

    1. very well said. wait what?

  19. Motorola’s only guaranteed to make more devices and lose more money.

  20. G for Google.

  21. Possible G for Giant. Thats mean Motorola Moto X variant with more bigger size, is like phablet.

  22. “Monkey Great Treasure” says it’s moto dvx actually. Moto dvx is the code name of this moto x’s cheaper version.

  23. I’m hoping that because the cheaper version is considered the DVX, the quad-core version could be considered the G??? Here’s to wishful thinking!
