trillian for android 2

Trillian, one of the longest running and most popular multi-protocol instant messaging clients, has gotten an upgrade on Android. We’re being treated to version 2.0, which brings us a long laundry list of great changes. The biggest notable change will be the new user interface, with the folks at Trillian finally getting with the times and delivering a Holo-esque experience for those on Android 4.0 or higher.

Alongside that refreshed user interface, we also get the ability to hold group chats with other Trillian users, the ability to import names and photos from your phone’s address book, new emoticons, the ability to appear mobile to those who are also using Trillian, improvements for Yahoo and MSN, the ability to manage and view all of the devices you have connected with Trillian, and more.

Trillian still supports the most widely-used protocols: Facebook Chat, MSN, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo!, and Jabber. If you are still on one or more of these platforms and want easy, reliable access to your chat buddies on the go then it’s definitely worth a quick download. Be sure to get that initiated by heading to the Google Play Store.

  1. Looking the the play store, the common complaints are: switching from contact list to favorites list, no black UI theme and a few are reporting login or crash issues. My own use of the previous version was a lackluster experience due to the lag in getting the IM’s..Since Trillian didn’t run as a service, it sometimes got kicked out of memory and no messages came through but more often than not, it was that IM’s took minutes or even hours. If the new version gets past that, the favorites list and white UI are issues I can get past. I don’t spent hours IM’ng but when I need a good IM client, I need the speed of Hangouts.

  2. Does Trillian have cross-platform encrypted OTR for Hangouts and/or Yahoo messenger yet?

  3. Does Trillian have SMS/MMS support, or is it just strictly for instant messaging services?
