The Conduit HD on OUYA: why the Android console could soon be packed with awesome games [VIDEO]

11

If you didn’t already know, the OUYA comes packed with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor for optimal gaming. Our friends at Tegra hooked us up with an .APK of “The Conduit” First Person Shooter game to test on the console. But wait a minute, wait a minute… slow it down.

Is this an OUYA optimized version of the game? No. Does it work almost flawlessly on the console? Yes. So what does that mean for the OUYA and gaming in general? We’ll tell you after watching the video below.

Head on over to OUYA Boards to talk about OUYA Games!

The OUYA is based on Android and in many ways helps extend the entire gaming experience for both developers and consumers. Since most Android devices are touch-based smartphones and tablets, the majority of Android games won’t work on OUYA, because unless you’ve got a touch-enabled television, it ain’t happening.

Android Developers can launch their APK on the Google Play Store with support for Bluetooth Controllers. And guess what? That controller mapping works pretty much flawlessly with the OUYA console, as illustrated in our above video of The Conduit on OUYA. So it can be assumed that any Android game with support for bluetooth controllers will properly map to OUYA.

Being an open, hackable platform will make sideloading these games onto OUYA a piece of cake. But perhaps more importantly, Android game developers who have already mapped their controls for bluetooth controllers should have pretty much no problem porting their games to OUYA. And with enough momentum, OUYA will enjoy a nice influx of beautiful, graphically stunning games ready to be enjoyed by the world.

As with any platform, consumer demand will depend on the availability of games. The availability of games will depend on developer interest. But developer interest circles back to a dependence on consumer demand/adoption… and we come full circle. The key here is how easily Android developers may port their already awesome games to the OUYA. With a little momentum, OUYA has a chance to crack the nut of mass adoption.

  1. Do you know what kind of rate android app adoption and integration to the Ouya will be? Is Ouya dependent on external developers or internal staff? I wanna make sure that it will be a relatively smooth and fast process before I move it from my WishPlz list ( http://bit.ly/10g4Szi ) to my home theater.

  2. Can preorder these at GAME now too in the uk for anyone interested in the extra reward points. Hopefully shows a good move in retail to raise awareness further of the product and for extra avenues for games and accessories.

  3. That’s pretty cool, wonder how long it’ll take my OUYA to arrive in the UK.
    P.S Nice haircut!

    1. Ha! Thanks. I tried to tone it down a bit for GDC :p

  4. If this has robust streaming services options (HBO Go, Amazon Prime, etc etc) … then it could be a solid Roku competitor. I’d buy it just to have all my streaming options + retro gaming emulators all in one box. Solid modern games would be a bonus!

    1. Not to mention you can easily Bluetooth a wireless keyboard and sideload messaging apps like Skype/Kik/Google Voice/etc. :D

    2. only problem is that amazon STILL has not released an Android version of their Amazon Video app – netflix, hbo go, yes.. but still waiting on amazon (which i prefer for VOD because it can play on a variety of devices- roku, kindle, ipads… just not in the play store for whatever reason)

  5. Does this offer any added benefit over connecting my rooted phone or tablet to my tv via a HDMI cable and using my PS3 controller? I love new gadgets, but if I already have something that accomplishes the same thing then I will pass. I already purchased the MHL adapter and Sixaxis controller app, so it would seem that my $15 investment offers the same as this device, and my bluetooth keyboard works as well, please let me know if I am missing something here.

    1. Its pretty much a shortcut.
I mean we could all do that but, why would we?
less hassle and it comes with a guarantee that it WILL work. then there’s little bonuses added to the ouya. a fan, warranty, exclusive games, apps, turn your regular TV to a Smart TV, etc.

      1. thanks for confirming that I don’t need this, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out out something ;)

  6. “The Conduit” and “Awesome” should never, ever, ever, ever, EVER be mentioned in the same sentence. Seriously.
