It’s finally here, folks. Samsung has just announced the Samsung Galaxy S4, aka the “Life Companion.” It’s a polycarbonate device that will come with a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display that has 441 ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S4 will come with up to Cat 3 4G LTE with for all markets with the technology, an infrared LED transmitter, Bluetooth 4.0, a 13 megapixel camera, 16-64GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot and more.

That camera can also record photo and video with both the 2 megapixel front amera and rear-facing camera simultaneously. It’s all the rage these days, apparently, and Samsung takes it to the max with a bunch of filters, effects, and customization options to make it your own.

The chipset inside will either be Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa-Core chipset clocked at 1.6GHz or a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor depending on region, though we’re not sure which chipset — either the S600 or s800 — Samsung is planning on going with just yet. Alongside that is 2GB of RAM, and the promise that Android 4.2.2 will be sitting beneath the latest version of Samsung’s custom TouchWiz user interface.

Key software features of the aforementioned TouchWiz include Samsung Smart Scroll, S Travel, S Health, S Translator, Group Play (for sharing your multimedia, games and memories), Air View, S Voice Drive, and more. We don’t have a price just yet, but you can expect the Galaxy S4 to launch on just about every carrier there is in just about any market you can think of. A quick early list gives us forthcoming availability at  AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, as well as US Cellular and Cricket in the US, as well as Deutsche Telecom, EE, H3G, Orange, Telenor, Telia Sonera, Telefonica, and Vodafone in Europe and other markets. Read on for full press details as well as watch the entire live stream of the press event on YouTube (skip ahead to the 40:20 mark).

Samsung Introduces the GALAXY S 4 – A Life Companion for a richer, simpler and fuller life

GALAXY S 4 gets you closer to what matters in life, bringing your world together

New York, USA, March 14, 2013 – Samsung Electronics announced today the fourth generation GALAXY S, the GALAXY S 4, designed to get you closer to what matters in life and bring your world together.

Understanding what matters most to us in our lives, the Samsung GALAXY S 4 was developed to redefine the way we live and to maximize our fulfillment of life. This sleek and innovative smartphone makes every moment of life very meaningful; it understands the value of relationships, enabling true connections with friends and family. It believes in the importance of an effortless user experience, making your life easy and hassle-free; and, it empowers your life, helping take care of your well-being.

The beauty of the phone is the highly crafted design encompassing a larger screen size and battery, minimized bezel; all housed in a light (130g) and slim (7.9mm) shape. The Samsung GALAXY S 4 is slimmer yet stronger, with less to hold yet more to see. It has come up with simply unreal beauty. At launch, two color options will be available – Black Mist and White Frost; with a variety of additional color options to follow later this year.

“With the GALAXY S 4, Samsung is again going to enhance the way we live,” said JK Shin, President and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung. “All the innovative features of GALAXY S 4 were developed based on the insights and needs we found from our consumers all around the world. Following the successful GALAXY S series, this phone is yet another great proof point of people-inspired innovation. At Samsung we’ll never stop pursuing innovation conceived by people, so we can inspire them in return.”

Meaningful Moments – Gives Greater Enjoyment

A rich life is one that’s filled with meaningful moments and the GALAXY S 4 captures and shares those special moments. The GALAXY S 4 has the world’s first Full HD Super AMOLED display to showcase images at their very best. Its 5-inch large screen has 441ppi for stunning viewing quality. The Samsung GALAXY S 4 also utilizes Corning’s new Gorilla® Glass 3*, making it a durable travel companion for all of life’s adventures.

Equipped with a 13 megapixel rear camera, the GALAXY S 4 also boasts a ‘Dual Camera’ function that allows simultaneous use of both front and rear cameras. When capturing moments, users can choose from a variety of frame effects which blend the two pictures naturally and also adjust the size of the small picture inside the big one. Users can select 8 different ways to combine the two photos taken by the front camera and the rear camera. At the same time, the ‘Dual Video Call’ function enables you to make and receive a video call with friends and family while showing what you are looking at during the call.

The camera functionality extends beyond Dual Camera, as the device is also equipped with 12 outstanding shooting modes including ‘Drama Shot’, which allows you to see all the action in one continuous time-lapse, and ‘Sound & Shot’, which uniquely stores sound and voice together as the picture is taken so those special moments are captured in the truest form imaginable, exactly as they happened.

These meaningful moments can also now automatically be stored in a photo album, with the new ‘Story Album’ function. Photos taken by the GALAXY S 4 are automatically gathered and sorted out according to your timeline, geo-tagging information, or a specific event to create a photo album. These unique story albums can be ordered and delivered as an offline photo album through a new partnership with Blurb*, so you can keep those precious moments safe to look at and share time and time again.

True Connections – Brings People Together

Samsung GALAXY S 4 enables true connections with the people in our lives. It is more than a personal device that can be enjoyed by one user – it makes the most of our relationships allowing us to easily share and experience many of life’s pleasures together with family and friends, wherever you are.

With its ‘Group Play’ function, users can enjoy music, photos, documents and games with those around them without even requiring a Wi-Fi AP or cellular signal. This innovative feature enables users to connect directly with others to share, play and co-create content and entertainment instantly. Its ‘Share Music’ option allows users to have the same song playing on multiple phones in sync to create the best party atmosphere.

The GALAXY S 4 brings all people closer together by breaking down language barriers. It makes international travel a joy, with ‘S Translator’ which provides instant translation, using text or voice translation on applications including email, text message and ChatON. This instant translation is possible both from speech to text and text to speech and ensures that you can rely on the correct information whilst abroad.

The GALAXY S 4 supports HSPA+42 Mbps and 4G LTE which means wherever you are in the world, you can rely on perfect connectivity. Especially, the LTE version supports up to 6 different band sets which allows it to function in most LTE coverage areas as well as enabling global LTE roaming. Furthermore, TDD/FDD LTE Dual Mode version will be introduced later this year.

Effortless Experience – Makes Things More Convenient

In today’s world, we are all looking for smart ways to make life easier and less stressful. The GALAXY S 4 ensures that tasks are effortless with innovative features that detect your face, voice and motions to enable screen control with no need for finger touch activation.

‘Samsung Smart Pause’ enables you to control the screen by where you look. When you are watching a video, the video pauses when you look away then it starts right up again when you are back. ‘Samsung Smart Scroll’ allows you to scroll the browser or emails up and down without touching the screen. It recognizes your face looking at the screen and movement of your wrist and then scroll the pages up or down accordingly.

‘Air View’ allows users to hover with their fingers to preview the content of an email, S Planner, image gallery or video without having to open it. You can even see a magnified view on the internet browser, or a phone number saved in the speed dial on the keypad. With ‘Air Gesture’, you can change the music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand.

With ‘S Voice Drive’ you can activate commands via voice control for optimization when driving. Once connected with a car Bluetooth, the phone automatically turns into driving mode converting text to speech so you can easily and safely check messages with no need to look at the screen.

‘Samsung Optical Reader’ makes life yet more effortless, by automatically recognizing text, a business card or QR code information, and providing useful functions such as translation, call, text message and search.

At home, using ‘Samsung WatchON’, the GALAXY S 4 will transform into an IR remote to control your home entertainment system including TV, set-top box, DVD player and even air conditioner. In addition, you can enjoy various content including live TV, cable TV and VOD based on the rich information provided by EPG (Electronic Program Guide).

Empowered Living – Takes Care Of Your Health and Quality of Life

The GALAXY S 4 empowers your life by keeping you up-to-date with health and wellbeing information using the new ‘S Health’ software. The combination of sensors built within the device systematically and automatically monitors your health, surroundings and so much more to help improve your quality of life. Also, users can easily check their health conditions using food diary, exercise diary and sleep monitor to stay fit and healthy. (Certain functions are enabled by specific accessories.)

To further protect your wellbeing, ‘Samsung Adapt Display’ provides an optimal viewing experience, customized for each type of application, and ‘Samsung Adapt Sound’ offers an optimal level and type of sound, personalized for each user, to make the most out of life.

Samsung GALAXY S 4 will be available from Q2 globally including US, partnering with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, as well as US Cellular and Cricket. In Europe, Samsung GALAXY S 4 is partnering with global mobile operators such as Deutsche Telecom, EE, H3G, Orange, Telenor, Telia Sonera, Telefonica, and Vodafone.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. :( Was expecting a new design

    1. Or at least an Earth-shattering kaboom. :)

      Pretty solid “thud” though.

  2. And once again the leaks were true! :P

    1. Unfortunately…

    2. my classmate’s step-mother makes $86/hour on the internet. She has been out of a job for 9 months but last month her paycheck was $20103 just working on the internet for a few hours. Read more on  Ask25.com

      1. Iv had enough of your scamming crap please stop replying to lots of comments iv posted

  3. the design is blah….

  4. probably the biggest yawn since yawning.

    1. Yawn? Max get a life.

      The new S4 includes a:
      -A faster processor
      -Full HD sAMOLED Screen
      -441 PPI
-WiFi a/b/g/n and the new upcoming “ac” standard
      -bluetooth 4.0
      -humidity and temperature sensor
      -13MP Camera
      -eye tracking
-IR to allow your phone to be used as a remote control
      -Large 2600 mAH battery
      -They kept the battery removable
      -They kept the microSD

      The list goes on….
How the hell do you say “yawn” to that?
What other phone on the market currently includes all the features the new S4 offers?

      1. this is why I think these comments are funny. The specs at least live up to expectations, if not exceeding them. Yet, it looks too similar to the old version, so people are disappointed? What? Most of you loved the look of the last one…

        1. The phone’s nice. The presentation was…lacking.

          1. I didn’t actually watch the presentation. But why does that matter? If you want kick-ass presentations, buy an iPhone haha

          2. I wasn’t even looking for a kick-ass presentation. I was looking for some person just to walk out and talk specs, show off some features. They tried to put on a Broadway show. It was pretty abysmal. I wouldn’t say Apple does kick-ass presentations but sometimes doing less says more.

          3. I’m from NYC. This is what Broadway shows are like.

          4. Haha!

        2. I’m not disappointed with the looks, but the lack of innovation. The GS3 had much more to offer over the GS2. Not the same this time.

          1. Disagree. Every measurable category has been improved, and lots of hardware has been added. People complained about being able to see Pentile? Solved with a DPI so high you’d not be able to see it if it sat on your eyeball. Worried it won’t handle the console-quality games to come? Better processors. Eyeing wireless tech coming to your carrier with fear? ALL the antennas are in this baby. Want to use your phone as a remote? Now you can, and you don’t need a third party bluetooth repeater to do it. Love MicroSD and Removable batteries? They’re here. Better camera? Check. More features that set it apart from the crowd of other smartphones? Triple Check.

ASIDE FROM BEING ABLE TO DO YOUR DISHES, WHAT ELSE COULD YOU WANT FROM THIS PHONE?!?!?!

          2. I agree. People booing but they improved everything.

          3. If it did my dishes, I’d buy two.

      2. *waits for that comment to mention the HTC One*

      3. People were all for the specs and when they see that the design is similar they don’t care about the specs??????????

      4. Let me break it down for you:

A more faster/efficient processor should be in every new flagship device, so that was expected.

The screen still has a lower ppi than HTC’s One (441 vs 468), but it is 4.99 inches.

The latest Wifi/Bluetooth technology better be in it, or that would be surprising.

The humidity and temperature sensor is interesting to me… I don’t know how that’s gonna work, especially if the S4 is in your pocket…

I can only judge the camera depending on reviews/personal experience, but the software features it has seems cool, but gimmicky.

Like the software features for the camera, I can only judge the eye-tracking feature if I see it in person/in a video, but I suspect it to be a gimmick that a few people would actually find useful.

The IR blaster is cool, but the HTC One also has it.

The 2600 mAh battery is a good thing, and for it to be removable is also good.

        Micro-SD slot… nice.

So… When it comes down to it, the S4 doesn’t really offer much that hasn’t already been introduced or particularly jaw-dropping.
I think I yawned while typing this up…

        1. pretty much what I thought about the whole thing

      5. I yawned at your list of 2011 specs.

        1. 2011 specs? Ya no those specs didn’t exist in 2011. Stop exaggerating.

      6. You also forgot MHL 2.0

      7. Max is still home masturbating to his Nexus 4. Pure Android you know, no matter how inferior it may be.

        1. haha only pure android can do that

      8. Damn you really got me there. ouch

    2. Samsung is becoming another iPhone–>releasing very minimal updates to their phones and pssing them off as a BRAND NEW PHONE (despite it having the same form factor of the previous model and incremental advances which could have been pushed to the SIII in a software update). Yet fan boys (and girls) of Samsung will act like this is earth-shattering “innovation” when its the same EXACT phone of last year–>seriously Samsung owners…dont become like iSheeple. *THINK*

      1. Please detail how it is the EXACT phone from last year. Side by side, spec for spec. then maybe losers like you will shut up. I dont even like Samsung and its got tons more features than the GS3. The only problem SHEEP like you have is that the outside is too similar to the GS3, thus your brainstorm of comparing Samsung to the iPhone. Wow ! real intelligent.

  5. …HTC one or X phone it is!

    1. I’m sticking with my DNA

      1. Still a good phone to own

      2. I’m on att so the one it is but I will say the dna is one solid device I adore them.

    2. Wake me up when they have SD or removable batteries. You know, features that the original Droid had.

  6. Welcome to GS3.5

  7. kinda curious as to what samsung’s R&D team has been up to the past year

  8. Nothing special to look at, but it’s not too ugly… The only thing going for the S4 is its micro-sd slot and removable battery.

  9. I like the 2600mah battery. Still not enough for me to ditch my GS3. looks like I’ll be watching out for the Note 3

    1. Word, end of this year they say

  10. Samsung pulled an apple :)

    1. At least I know what Group Play on my Note II is for now.

    2. Yes and no. They did in respect to using the same general esthetic design language… But they didn’t in regard to the fact that they actually did include some innovation…

  11. I love these comments! No one likes the phone. For those of you that were really excited for this, here is a link to order the Nexus 4 from the Play Store.

    https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_4_8GB?id=nexus_4_8gb&hl=en

EDIT: Apparently one person disagrees, because he (or she) has down-voted every negative comment.

    1. The lack of the SD card slot made it an instant no no for me getting the Nexus 4

      1. That seems fair.

  12. i wanna see the note 3 lol

  13. Looks like my Note 2 has no worries.

  14. I wonder if Apple will sue them for releasing a Galaxy S3s. That’s copying to release half upgrades. (obviously trolling)

Still… it really is a S3s with it looking exactly the same. Come on Samsung, change it up!

  15. Best choice design for the S4. It was either gamble with a new design and sell millions
or loose millions. or keep the same 1 year old loved design which will guarantee millions in sales and improve on the specs, battery life and material of the phone.

    1. I bet $50 fewer S4’s are sold than S3’s (adjusted for subscriber inflation :))

      1. probably true, I also have a feeling that more S5’s will be sold then S3’s

    2. Well, they should have:

      – Gotten rid of that hideous home button

      – No capactive buttons

      – Make TouchWiz look less cartoon-ish

If it had all of those changes, plus a removable battery/micro-sd slot, I think Samsung would take every other Android manufacturer and Apple out of business…
      Alas, they did not.

      1. Hallelujah! At least get rid of the physical home button for god’s sake.

      2. I like physical buttons. You know, not all apps are designed for soft buttons

        1. That is true. Some apps on my Nexus 7 keep the soft keys visible and it just looks ugly. The black bar would make the app more appealing to my eyes.

But “Extended Desktop” ability fixes that. Although Google should implement that feature. That would fix EVERYONE’s woes about the Status bar and Nav. Bar taking up screen space.

    3. It’s definitely derivative of the GSIII, but also the GSII and previous ones. Hard to say this is the “same” design, it definitely evolved in some key ways. It just looks firmly in the Galaxy design language

    4. Yes, because Samsung should just stick to the same exact design for the S5, S6, S7… -_-

      1. I foolishly thought Samsung would redesign. I was waiting for today’s announcement with such anticipation, but instead I got disappointment.

      2. and the same naming scheme…

        1. Yeah, Galaxy S this, Galaxy S that. S Pen. S Voice. Arrrrgh… It’s almost as bad as HTC’s trademarks.

          1. S-I S-think S-you S-failed S-to S-read S-the S-entire S-article, S-you S-forgot S-several S-s’s..ssss.ss’ssss’ssssss s (S-P.s. S-touchwiz S-sux)

      3. Not really but what could have Samsung have done Design wise? 95% of the phone IS the screen. So hmm.. they could have gone bezeless and button less but then we would always be hitting that screen accidentally.

        1. No, I mean… like the look of the phone. Wouldn’t you agree Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and the iPhone — although they’re all just “rectangles” — look very different from each other?

          1. welcome to branding. the iphone may look different from the HTC, Samsung and Motorola, but it looks very similar to the last iphone. what they are doing is making an instantly recognizable model. think of it like a car. every year the new line of Chevy whatevers come out and while they may not look like each other, this year’s Malibu looks more or less identical to last year’s with maybe just a few small changes. they want you to look at the phone and say “that’s a Samsung Galaxy S”. they don’t necessarily care if you can determine which Galaxy S at a glance.

I have to wonder how long it will be before case-modding becomes a thing for phones. to me, the look from the store isn’t the biggest thing, doesn’t even factor into my decision, but a custom case to make the phone unique to me would be sweet.

        2. The % of screen area to phone area (if the phone were a perfect rectangle like the screen) went from 66% on the S III to 72% on the S IV. The true percentages are bigger because the corners are rounded, but I’d be surprised if they hit the mid 80s. Though we may never see a phone with 95% screen, I’d still be happier with less bezel. The side bezels of the S IV at 3.8 mm are good, but the Nexus 4 has 3.6, so it isn’t state of the art or anything (I do think 3 mm is about the limit since I do want to add a wrap around case and some curve to the sides). But the vertical bezels can still be a lot smaller given I don’t want any buttons on the front – only speakers like HTC wisely chose (not that they don’t make plenty of poor choices too). I’d much rather my Note II didn’t have a button but had front facing stereo speakers. The S IV averages top and bottom bezels of 13.1 mm. Not bad, but the Motorola Defy was 12.5 mm. I’d like to go down to 9.7 mm which I think is still room for speakers

A 5″ 16×9 screen with 9.7 and 3.4 mm bezels is 130x69mm which is a great size for a phone for me (my Note II is proving to be too big – oh well). Perhaps the S V will be closer to what I’m looking for, but I’ll probably move to the next Nexus phone (or the one after) instead of another Samsung purchase. I hate Touchwiz, refuse to get used to it and am patiently waiting for a mainstream AOSP ROM to achieve a good level of stability and functionality. Of course my wait is frustrated by Samsung’s poorer policy on open source compared to some other companies (e.g. ones for which Cyanogen Mod is fully stable). Not that Google hasn’t disappointed me with their phone designs – I haven’t liked any of them enough to get one (though I do have a Nexus 7 which for the money I like).

Can bezels be too small? No (except for the 3 mm limit for a case). I can imagine speakers, mikes and buttons all on the sides (with cutouts in cases just as for the Note II pen, cameras, etc.). Issues with touching the sides of the screen accidentally (and going to the home screen for example if using Stock Android) should be fixed in the OS (e.g. Pie menus, swiping from the side, other gestures) and shouldn’t be an excuse to hinder phone design.

          Dara

          1. Great post (and I don’t say that too often) :)

          2. Thanks – that post was a bit late, not sure anybody would read it.

I wanted to add – anybody who wants to see my spreadsheet where I take the specs of some recent phones and compute areas, bezels, etc., email me at [email protected] and I’ll send it.

      4. THANK YOU

    5. They didn’t keep the same design. They may have kept the same design language but obviously it has to be new engineering because the screen is bigger the battery is bigger etc.. I agree… Smart move keeping what people loved but also upgrading pretty much every spec imaginable.

    6. That’s how I see it. They made a huge design leap last year. Took a big chance on their new style and its worked great for them through multiple flagship devices. Did anyone honestly expect a drastic move away from their current design?

  16. Less tapdancing more features please.

    1. I wonder if the tap-dancing kid comes with the phone…

      1. I sure hope not, kids are expensive.

  17. boring and uninspired.

  18. I personally love the GS3 design so I’m glad… kinda… that it’s sticking around for one more generation. The GS4 looks better on the back to me.

    1. You liked the physical home button?

      1. i love it!

  19. Samsung Unpacked: CRINGE-WORTHY
    Samsung Galaxy S4: MEH-TASTIC

If it wasn’t for the S4’s unlocked bootloader, removable battery, and microSDXC slot, the HTC One would be #1 phone pick.

    NEXT: Galaxy Note 3++++

    1. Do we know for sure that the bootloader is unlocked?

      1. The last three have been, so it’s a safe assumption

        1. And all of HTC’s devices were too, until they weren’t. Same with Motorola.

          1. Yeah, but the creator of Cyanogen doesn’t work for Motorola or HTC. He does work for Samsung

  20. *facepalm* This keynote reminds me of Qualcomm at CES

  21. touchwiz still looks chincy and cheap. I hope people hold The One first and compare them because obviously there is no comparison.

    1. Then they actually try to use it and most of the apps don’t work

  22. gimmick after gimmick. I had seriously high hopes for this device……

    1. What do you want them to do? Build a spaceship into the phone? What is a big improvement that realistically could have been made that wasn’t?

      1. 3,000mAh battery
        3D dual camera
        bundled Qi charger
        Vanilla Android

        1. Good luck getting all those things on any phone this year. The new Nexus might have 2 of those 4 things (vanilla android is a given, so they automatically get 1).

        2. Were these expectations or just hopes? The only believable thing you said was the 3,000 mAh battery.

          1. These are the things I would expect, in order to buy it. Looks like I will wait to see what the Moto-Xphone will be like.

          2. So that you can be equally as disappointed? Vanilla android on a SAMSUNG phone… That deserves a laugh. I own an S3 and will be trading up to the S4 and would never hope that would be an option. It’s a very unrealistic goal to have

        3. 3D dual camera like the one in the Evo 3D? Trust me… that was a huge gimmick

          1. I would have LOVED to be able to take 3D video and pictures of my kids, then watch on my 3D TV.

        4. Puh-lease. Samsung is NEVER going to give us Vanilla Android. Everyone knows that.

        5. Vanilla Android?

          Obvious troll is obvious.

        6. Agree on the battery. They won’t get rid of tw, tho. As for the 3d cam, 3d had already been exposed as a gimmick/fad. The sooner everyone accepts that, the sooner we can get oems to move on to bigger and better things.

          1. 3D is not a gimmick. If you had an active shutter 3D TV, you would not be saying that. Personally, I LOVE 3D movies, and 3D games with Nvidia vision.

          2. Lol to each his own. I’ve seen them… And I do think it’s slightly better than passive… But talk to me in 5 years, when just about all 3d media will be gone. Just my belief….

          3. 3D will not be gone. In fact, gaming of the future will have full immersion. Matrix style. Why you think 3D will disappear, is beyond me. 3D is the stepping stone towards full VR.

          4. I’m not the only one my friend. I just think the way 3d works now is sloppy and crude, relatively speaking… If that makes sense.

          5. Wearing glasses is a hindrance, no doubt. When glasses-free 3D will become more available, maybe then people will embrace it.

  23. TouchWiz is still gross.

    1. Can’t say I fancy it much either but who thought it was going to change significantly?

      1. I’unno, maybe cuz HTC did? Samsung could have at least changed the color scheme. Made it look more modern. Navy blue is so…. boring.

        1. We get it you dislike Samsung and you heart HTC…you must like the look of a phone while it is plugged into a charger …

          1. dat power saver mode yo. My one x+ still clocks highers scores than an s3 while using it. Where is your god now?

    2. I agree. If it wasn’t for custom launchers. When I had my G2, I threw Sense on there. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to use Sense or ADW. LoL!! Sense looks nice.

  24. really lame. i knew we were gonna be disappointed. One or next moto phone for me.

  25. Nope…they’re facing the same thing I hated apple for; more of the same. Not good enough.

  26. I actually find this pretty amusing. Everyone was jacked about the phone because of the specs. But the exterior design stays pretty much the same as the old one, and now no one cares that the interior is awesome?

    1. I was thinking the same exact thing. Take a stroll through the forums and some of the most asked for features were implemented but now that it’s here… Meh lol. Makes me laugh every year.

    2. Agreed.

    3. The interior isn’t so awesome if it’s just a snapdragon 600, at least for the USA. The Droid DNA did the whole 5″ adreno 320 quad core krait thing a while ago now. The exterior, while similar, is actually most impressive. It is less wide, and thinner, but has a significantly bigger battery, and bigger screen, and the height is the same. I bet a 3300mah battery in a 9.3mm thickness would be possible, as an extended option.

  27. Thank god i bought a Nexus 4 instead of waiting for the S4, i’ll just wait to see what google will release as the next nexus phone.

    1. Same here. The specs are good and all, but I’m going to need something more exponential before I upgrade. I went from dual-core to quad-core with the last phone. Getting a S4 would be pretty redundant since the American version will have a slightly bumped up version of the S4 Pro that’s in my Nexus.

  28. expected better battrey :(

  29. looks like im keepping my S3

  30. That was a god awful presentation. Better to just stand around and talk about the phone.

  31. I MIGHT sell my Note II to my dad to get this… and use his upgrade to get it

    1. You’re actually going to charge your dad… For ANYTHING? O.o

  32. Don’t know if I’ll be able to wait for the Note 3 or just get this. Right now this is my only option because of removable battery and SD slot. Plus, I prefer Amoled over LCD, so no matter what this phone is a win for me.

    1. I’m sticking with the Note II.

  33. Out of curiosity, why were people expecting a new design? Look at their S1-S3. The design is not that different. So why does this surprise everyone?

    1. I agreed, it’s the same phone for the same serious, why expect major change? unless is a rebrand.

  34. Stop adding an “S” to everything, you’re copying Apple

    1. How? The Galaxy “S” wasn’t like the 3G”S” moniker in that it was just an upgraded version of the same phone, it is part of the root of the phone’s name. “Samsung Galaxy S”IV compared to “iPhone 4″S.

      1. S-Voice, S-Beam, S-everything. It’s annoying, and they’re copying Apple, the way Apple adds the “i” to everything.

        1. ‘kin hell. Not you and your Apple-centric trolling again. *sigh*

          1. I gravely dislike Apple. Samsung is blatantly copying Apple with the presentation, and with all the gimmicky software……

        2. Now I understand what you mean lol. I guess it’s just easier to differentiate like that

          1. They can keep the same core words, but just drop the S. So instead of S-Voice, just Voice. adding an S to everything, is exactly how Apple adds the “i” iPad iPhone iMovie iCrap

          2. Well it’s probably more of a legal thing too because I’m pretty sure just voice and just beam would be trademarked or copyrighted by now, so they have to make up a name that differentiates and links it the Galaxy S name.

      2. He’s just trolling.

  35. Samsung this, Samsung that, just drop the Samsung moniker

  36. It’s sad when a phone has the beastliest specs on the market but it’s the looks that kills it. Had the GS4 lost the physical home button and at least somewhat changed the design I would be begging Sammy to take my money. HTC One here I come.

    1. whats wrong with a physical home button I actually prefer it to have one

      1. Yeah i don’t get why people have issues with physical buttons, why would you want on-screen buttons that cover up your screen.

        1. Exactly, I have a phone that’s like that at the moment and its one of the most annoying features, plus you can wake it using that button as well

    2. I prefer a phone with bad looks and “the beastliest specs” with removable battery, unlcoked bootloader and microSD slot > a good looking phone with no removable battery, no microSD slot, locked bootloader and an HTC logo in the middle of the capacitive buttons bar that does absolutely nothing.

      1. Not to mention that the “look” of the phone is pretty irrelevant once you throw a case on it and lets face it, most people put a case on their phone. Looks mean nothing to me. I want awesome specs, awesome features and a big removable battery. The S4 delivers, although I’m probably going to hold off upgrading my s3 for the Note 3. I want an even bigger screen.

  37. Were people really expecting a huge upgrade over the S3? the S3 is less than a year old. It also seems like some people were expecting Samsung to completely refresh the galaxy brand and design but why would they do that when the S3 was so successful.

    1. Nail on the head, you hit.

  38. Will all the complainers and QQers leave now, buy your stupid nexus or HTC and leave us Samsung people alone now? We’re sick of your whining of “It’s not creative, different enough, wwaaaaah!”

    1. yeah, it just kills me that the 3G lovin Nexus 4 losers are bashing the S4. Everytime a Nexus is released al we hear is its ok that the feature set sucks, because its pure android. or its ok that its only 3G or the radios suck, cuz its pure Android.

People in the “real world” want a phone that works out of the box and the Nexus has yet to be that. The envy here is a joy to behold.

    2. lol you sound like an apple fanboy

      1. Agreed.

    3. I don’t get it either. The Nexus 4 looks like the Galaxy Nexus which looks like the Nexus S. The main reason I didn’t continue the Nexus phone lineup was because the Nexus S looked NOTHING like the Nexus 1. I was expecting another aluminium design. Now they’re keeping that design they have now, and I don’t like it as compared to the first one.

*patiently waiting for HTC to make the next Nexus*

  39. I guess everyone was expecting the S4 to cure AIDS.

    1. Well, there is S Health

    2. At least cure cancer

    3. it will the aids of the cell market (apple) it will at least be some progress toward a cure.

  40. i can understand that they didn’t change the design, very similar to the s3, but i hope the S5 would have a different design..

    1. The S5 will have an extra row of icons :D

      1. and narrower.. lol

  41. So it’s not specified if the processor is the Snapdragon 600 or 800?

If it’s the 800 I am a go all the way, no hesitations!!!

  42. Where does it list the S4 as having the newest Wi-Fi standard “ac”?

    1. during the keynote, I saw it. But i’m sure it’s AC-Draft, not AC.

  43. i like the S translate feature, the dual camera, the new screen with 441 ppi samoled… are the features from the S3 gonna be on this one too?

    1. Most likely they’re keeping the S-Beam and all the other Motion and gesture features, but that’s just my guess. I’m looking forward to the S Translate also.

    2. You have to wonder how well S-translate will actually do the job. Google translate is OK. Google Now>S-Voice. So…? Also, to deal with international roaming fees? Yikes.

      1. At first I thought “why are they cloning google translate?” But then they said it could translate with OCR

        1. Translate has a camera function- doesn’t work in real time but more like OCR on scanner.

  44. The GSIV is what I expected. After the numbers done last by the GSIII, you figure the design would be the same. At this point the only thing you can do with a smart phone is add more cores. Make the screen bigger and add a better camera.

  45. this is what im afraid of… everyone wants to throw their S3 into a drawr for this…. i just got my S3 and now everyone wants to leave… i feel like i made a reailly dumb purchase…….. pretty distrought right now….. ive always had the second hand phone the crappy phone now i feel i just got that same scaniro thrown in my face with my S3….

    1. I’m sorry, you just bought an S3 when the simplest of google searches would have told you the S4 was being announced today…and you’re distraught? Pull the other one.

      1. i got the S3 thinking it would be a higj dev device i knew the S4 was comming but now EVERYBODY wants it i didnt expect this much wantng of it

        1. Have you been living under a rock for the last 20 years? This is what happens with electronics, man.

          1. ( im 16 so i havet been alive that long) i just hope the S3 will contue to be widely upported

          2. widely supported in regards to what? If you’re asking if it will still be fully operable in two years, the answer is yes.

          3. Here’s some advice, though. Next time you’re looking into buying a new phone, start doing research 3-6 months ahead of time. That way you’ll know if a particular manufacturer is going to be releasing a new flagship soon.

          4. My young friend, embrace XDA and you will have no worries. ;-)

          5. what my fear is based on is the moto droid (OG) when peoples contract ended people RAN to other phones…

          6. Did you buy the phone outright, no contact?

          7. the droid i have is off contract dad got an iPhone but the S3 is 2 weeks old on a contract

          8. Assuming you’re on Verizon, if you are under 14 days you can return the S3.

          9. I don’t know why my replies aren’t going through but… I’m assuming u are on Verizon… You can return a phone for up to 14 days with them.

          10. Did you buy the phone outright, no contract?

    2. If you always wait for the next best thing you’re bound to feel the same at some point.

  46. If you like gimmicks you’ll looooove the GS4

  47. Love it. The phone is an absolute beast. Just about the same size as the SGS3 but with suped up specs and a 5 inch screen. The software innovations are over the fucking top. This is without a doubt the best phone of 2013+.

  48. Just sounds like a lot of bloatware…

  49. They definitely didn’t listen to the world like the guy said they did.

  50. Definitely a let down from someone who has owned a gs2 and gs3. Ask yourself how many of the features you will actually use. Cause i barely use any of them and neither do the other 30 people i know who own the gs3. Its cool to show off to a person who has an iPhone but for daily usage? No thanks. HTC ONE is looking real good right now except for locked boot loaders.

  51. EPIC FAIL with that presentation. Nice try copying Apple and Qualcomm.

  52. It’s possible to oversell anything. This looks to be a worthy successor to the s3 to me. It’s what I realistically expected. Actually, If you don’t appreciate the improvements in the phone, you are probably happy enough with your s3 as I am (if you have one) and are not ready to upgrade. Many of us are locked into contracts for another year anyway.Just wait another year and see what develops.Samsung needs to tone down the hype is all.As for the phone,I think they did a really nice job!

  53. Seems like a nice enough spec bump, and frankly that’s really all Samsung needed to do at this point. I don’t know if bumping up the size again was a good idea or not.

The software “innovations” are a joke. Gimmics, gimmics, gimmics. How many awkward, non-obvious ways do you need to scroll, anyway? 99% of people can’t even frame one photo decently, never mind two at the same time. And multi-phone surround sound is supposed to be a thing now? Really?

All of these features will be forgotten or disabled. We’ll need to wait for I/O to see the next big thing in software.

  54. No octocore for USA. What a load of crap. I am going back to HTC.

  55. It sure is a disappointment when it comes to the user interface . Same old touchwiz again -_- I expected revamped user Interface !

  56. I like the infrared blaster, I always misplace my remote controls!

  57. Well, in the US at least, HTC wins between the two. Same internal cpu, better presentation.

    1. I would disagree. The HTC One will be outmarketed because Samsung has more money. It is just a sad truth. I respect HTC and Samsung, but the S4 will be the hottest thing on the market when it will releases.

  58. I’m using GS3 and thinking of skipping to GS5, but after i look at the specs… I want it!!! I want my GS4!!

  59. Was there any indication of when this might be hitting shelves?

  60. I will probably get down voted for this, but I kinda like the look of the GS3 and this one too. Sure I wouldn’t mind it to look different, but I have to say everything else about it looks good. The screen, the specs, and all those software features.

  61. ALL THAT MONEY, still can’t make a decent, informative F website. SMH.

    http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys4/index.html

  62. İ hate sgx544 ,it is awful. Why samsung didnt annouce the phone with mali-t658 gpu?awful!!!

  63. For those complaining about the “look” of the phone, it is pretty irrelevant once you throw a case on it and lets face it, most people put a case on their phone. Looks mean nothing to me. I want awesome specs, awesome features, micro sd and a big removable battery. The S4 delivers, although I’m probably going to hold off upgrading my s3 for the Note 3. I want an even bigger screen.

  64. Samsung… Is turning into apple… Mark my words I will stand in the background with my HTC one and quietly watch apple and samsung topple eachother.

  65. …but can it make calls?
