Todoist for Android aims to be the last “todo” app you’ll ever need

34

Perfecting the arsenal for your todo list needs has been the goal of many-a developer over the years. Remember the Milk is one of the finer options and suffices for most people. Any.DO came in and stole the thunder from them, and did so with ferocity and tenacity. Now, a new challenger steps into the ring.

At its core, Todoist isn’t a killer app that everyone should stop the presses for — there’s only so much you can do with a todo list experience, after all. But it’s how it does it that is catching everyone’s collective eye. Todoist gives you a suite of productivity tools in a very elegant, stylish and simple package. Those on Android 4.0 and higher will especially fall in love.

One of the biggest features is the ability to organize tasks into projects. My biggest issue with most task managers is that things can get messy trying to make “sub tasks” for a bigger goal, and Todoist makes this painfully painless (if that even makes sense).

The paid version allows you to color code certain tasks using labels, too, so taking a gander at your yet-to-be-finished responsibilities is even easier. You can sync across desktop and other platforms, though if you opt to stick with the fre version you’ll only get one sync per day.

In addition, Todoist features a host of reminder options. You can be notified via SMS, email or push if you need help remembering what’s on your plate for the day. Finally, task notes allows you to add details to any given task so you can make less vague headers for easier viewing.

You can find more info on Todoist at the app’s website, but the basic experience is free so why not just give it a shot yourself by visiting the Google Play Store? An in-app purchase option will be there to greet you should you find that this app answers the questions to all your task list needs. Let us know what you think of it in the comments section below!

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I still use color note which gives me unlimited syncing and color coding. What does this do that better or different than colornote? Does this have widgets as well?

    1. Why the vote down? That was a legitimate question… i would truly like to know as i love colornote but im always down to try new things.

      1. this is the internet. If your ideas don’t match up with others, chances are you’re getting a down vote.
EDIT: No, I didn’t down vote.

    2. @xsirxx:disqus Todoist allows you to color code and also is also available as a Mac desktop widget. It allows you to synch across your devices and it’s the to-do app that’s available on the highest number of different platforms.

  2. Doesn’t look like it syncs with Google Tasks. I’m not signing up for another third party website, so it’s DOA for me.

    1. Basically this! I’m currently using “Tasks” which has been flawless for me. Syncs well with Google and looks clean. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.teamtasks.tasks.paid

    2. Agreed, syncing with Google Tasks is a must! Seeing my tasks physically on my calendar is invaluable!

  3. I need one that will sync with Exchange or its worthless to me. I may take a serious look at W8 phone early next year. For my particular line of employment deep exchange integration might just push me onto that platform.

  4. Am I the only one who’s attention was immediately drawn to the disproportionate size of the galaxy nexus and the hand holding it? It’s such a bad shop that I can’t even focus on the article.

    1. Looks like they’re holding one of those undersized universal remotes lol

    2. Hopefully that’s a Nexus S… or they resurrected Andre the Giant to get this picture.

  5. I wish there were a todo app where we could share lists with people. ie: my wife and I could create a list of needed items for the grocery store or target and we could both add to it. The only way around this that I have found is if we create a joint account for Evernote or something similar, but then I can’t share a second list with someone else, like christmas lists with siblings…

    1. Actually it looks like Springpad can do this now. I haven’t used that in awhile since some old data from a 3rd device that was wifi only was synced over newer data and I lost a bunch of notes. Time to give Springpad another chance…if they have it for Windows Phone for my wife.

      1. My wife and I’ve tried using it… Springpad is just so overkill… it and Evernote try to do waay too much and the interfaces of both suck…. Not intuitive or quick to use at all.

        1. Sounds like you should try Catch then sir. I got it so I can share shopping lists with my wifefriend, amongst other things

        2. Agreed. I just want something simple for making lists. I want them to be editable by multiple people across multiple platforms with a web interface. That’s it.

    2. Try Astrid. It’s awesome, share lists, assign tasks, syncs with Google tasks and has great widgets and lots of options for reminders, notes, sharing, syncing, etc. I’ve been using it for about 6 months and love it.

    3. My wife and I use the Out of Milk app to do just what you mention. Their free version includes ‘real time’ sync and sharing of lists. We have separate accounts and simply share specific lists as needed. Lists can be accessed via their website as well, so it’s not limited just to mobile platforms. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.capigami.outofmilk

    4. I use GTasks for my personal tasks and like the sync with Google Tasks and the ease of use. But it doesn’t support syncing the same list with other people.

My wife and I have been using Mighty Grocery for this lately and it has worked OK. The interface isn’t quite as fast and easy, but it has been working.

I’ll have to look at some of these others like Any.DO.

    5. Astrid can do this.

  6. Astrid, best ToDo manager i’ve used. Google tasks sync, sharing and task assignment, can group tasks into lists which can also be shared. lots of options for reminders and putting notes for your tasks. Even has a locale/tasker plugin that will pop up reminders based on location…. drive by the grocery store and your grocery list pops up. Love It!

    1. interesting about the location pop up

  7. I see no sync with Google. One thing that keeps me with Any.DO is the ability to share tasks with others. I don’t see that feature either.

    1. Bummer. That’s what I would be looking for. Sync with Google Tasks and the ability to share/sync the same task list/project by multiple people/devices.

  8. That is one stolen logo – td.com

  9. I’m satisfied with task list. Its free no obligations and it just works.

  10. The desktop client for Todoist is a rubbish web based browser. It was pretty much “hate at first sight”. Astrid is a much better client and those that need multi-platform support I suggest Producteev they put the time and effort in creating functional desktop applications to compliment their mobile application and does resort to using cheap web app gimmicks like Todoist.

  11. try Didit!..very easy to use with its gesture interface
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teenoapps.didit

  12. I’ve tried them all (except this one) and I always go back to Astrid. It has the best widgets, its extremely simple and it just works. I’m going to check this one out tonight though.

    1. @Crimsonshadow774:disqus hey! keep in mind that Todoist has a Mac desktop widget, and also comes as a plugin for different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, etc) and email clients like Gmail and Outlook.

  13. .

If you had simply mentioned that this was a monthly subscription type app you would have saved your readers a LOT of bother.
    .

    1. Hi @Quryous:disqus actually Todoist has both a free and a subscription version depending on the level of task-management that one requires. The paid version is excellent for taming complex projects and helping one stay productive at work.

  14. Haven’t tried this one. I’ve tried a couple, and I like Out of Milk because it has To do list as well as a Grocery list. It’s simple, share-able and syncs anytime a change is made.

  15. Adding a note to a task is a premium feature? Also, couldn’t easily find how to set recurring tasks. I’ll check out Any.Do but I guess I’m sticking with RTM for now.
