Samsung Galaxy S2 4G available on Virgin Mobile for $370

14

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been available since summer. Yes, Virgin Mobile’s 4G is still driven through Clearwire’s dying WiMax network. But the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still a great phone and it’s going to be available from Virgin Mobile starting today. The device, simply named Samsung Galaxy S2 4G, will cost you $370, and since there are no contracts to deal with for any of Virgin’s services then you won’t be forced to stay that for two years if you don’t want to be.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 features Samsung’s 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos 4 processor, a 4.52 inch display, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel HD camera with a 1.3 megapixel front camera and more. Thankfully enough, Virgin’s version comes with Android 4.0 (with TouchWiz) out of the box so you won’t have to deal with the painstakingly-long wait Galaxy S2 users had to with going from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean is a different story, though, so keep that in mind.

It might not be a popular option for the Virgin faithful with news that Sprint might be making its 4G LTE network the primary 4G technology for Boost and Virgin soon, though considering that’s just a rumor some of you may not care to wait to see if it pans out.

And sure, you’d be getting 2011 technology, but for $370 there’s not much more you can expect. We’d love to see Virgin offering the Galaxy S3 soon as it comes up on its half-year mark but that’ll probably depend on factors that simply can’t be rushed. In any case, if you’re sold on this phone then you can finish the deed over at Virgin’s website starting today.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I said it last night the leaked marketing material is fake a boost banner showing off late with a image of the s2

  2. Wouldn’t it be better just to get an unlocked Nexus 4

    1. Nexus 4 runs on GSM network. Virginmobile is a CDMA network…..NOT compatible.

      1. Course, Virgin Mobile is contract free which means someone could leave, and jump on say…. Straight Talk and choose either T-Mobile or AT&T SIM for $45 a month. O_o

        1. Yeah, I’ve been on Virgin Mobile for a couple of years with a $25 plan, unlimited data and texting but only 300 min talk time. I enjoy the cheap price but hate the phone selection, I have a motorola triumph and only reason it has survived is because of the developers on forums supporting it. I attempted to order a Nexus 4 and was going for T-mobiles value plan, I most likely will. Virgin Mobile is cheap but the phones come “as is” with no further updates.

Edit: and another reason to switch, if I get another phone my $25 plan will be gone, I’ll have to go for $35 or more anyways. So might as well get a Nexus 4 and port my number over to another carrier.

          1. That definitely sounds like a plan to me. I am thinking about going the Straight Talk route myself, but I need to figure out what HSPA+ speeds are like in my area.

          2. Oh, I haven’t looked into Straight Talk yet! That actually sounds good for unlimited talk, text and data for $45. Plus you can buy a 6 month or 1 year plan and save a few dollars every month.

        2. I’ve heard that Straight Talk is terrible. There arent very many good reviews for it.

  3. Since there is an LTE rumor for Virgin and Boost…I think I rather just wait for LTE to be live in San Jose/Bay area to buy a LTE enabled device…I am happy with EVO V on Wimax for now since Wimax rocks at least where I live..

    1. Wimax is hit or miss here in Chicago. In my house it sucks. When traveling its spotty. I only get good reception at the train heading to work and at work. The Evo V is am awesome phone but I’m not jumping to another device anytime soon.

      1. You guys are already live with LTE aren’t you guys? Not sure how good the coverage is. My sister lives about 45 minutes out side of Chicago in Indiana and she does not get Wimax but Sprint just announced her little town next to Gary Indiana for LTE

  4. Still a King’s phone!!!

    1. a foolish king

  5. Just make sure it’s not by TracFone: my SII will not be upgraded, TracFone told me.
