Gmail now lets you search for long lost emails by size, general date, and more

7

Google’s really been giving Gmail a lot of love these past few months, specifically when it comes to search. It wasn’t too long ago we told you guys about Google’s new way of searching through attachment text and Google Drive files.

Now, ‘ol Googs has enabled the more advanced searching of both email sizes, dates, and more. Lookin’ for that email with pics of those Halloween babes you got sometime last year? Well, if you have a general idea of the size you can type “size:5m” or “larger:5m” for emails equal to, or larger than 5MB. You can even combine the query with other commands like older_than:1y if you have a general idea of when an email was sent/received. Awesome stuff.

The advanced search is already enabled in Gmail on both the web and Android app. If you’re looking for a complete list of advanced search terms, those can be found here and below (click for full size). Enjoy.

  1. That’s fantastic and all, but where’s my pinch-to-zoom?

  2. i just want the ability to mark my whole inbox read

    1. Yeah, it’s easy enough to search for and then select all 1000+ old messages using the browser-based Gmail, but still can’t do it using the app (just tried again). And afaik, the app doesn’t even have a multi-select-all – you have to select ’em all one by one.

At gmail.com you just search for “in:inbox is:unread” for example, then click “select all” to get everything beyond the first page, then archive or mark as read. Granted, I’ve only had to do this maybe 5 times when I got the urge to have a “zero inbox” :)

  3. A lot of this should be handled with graphical tools. Sliders for dates. Add Sender buttons for people who may have sent the message.

  4. I know we are not going to have to update to 4.2 just get pinch to zoom? I guess I could just root this GNote 2 to get it. Might be paying a visit to QBKing77 after school.

    1. I agree! Definitely needs to be more than just pinch-to-zoom, but I feel like that’s the most important missing feature of GMail thus far.
