Android 4.2 GAPPs package now available for download

39

While Android 4.2 didn’t get the grand unveiling many thought it deserved, we were no less excited for its arrival. It’s bringing a lot of great new features like Photo Sphere and some updated system apps — ie Gmail, Calendar and the like.

The first crop of users getting to play around with Android 4.2 itself will be those who opt for the latest Nexus devices, but for those of us on the Galaxy Nexus who might not get it right away you can still experience much of what it has to offer.

AndroidSpin has gotten its hands on a GAPPs package that’ll give Galaxy Nexus users the updated versions of Gmail, Maps, Talk, Calendar, Clock, Photo Sphere, the latest keyboard, and more. It’s presented as a flashable .zip file just as any GAPPs package is, and that can be flashed through your recovery of choice as if you were flashing a ROM. The only thing to note is that Google Wallet comes as a separate APK so be sure to grab that one and sideload it if that’s all you’re interested in.

Links to both downloads will be at the source below, and they’re hosted by Dev-Host so there’s not much trickery to be had. Be sure to let us know if things go OK, and have fun getting a taste of Android 4.2 before Google delivers it starting November 13th.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. i’m getting spoiled with swipe actions in gmail…i need that in the mail app and gvoice

    1. Agreed. Although Voice has been lacking in batch features as well, and I think I’d rather get that sooner.

      1. Google voice is lightyears behind every other communication app out there, it’s not even funny :(

  2. GALAXY S3??

    1. It should work, or using a ROM that is running of 4.1.2 at the least. See what happens. If anything it will just deny it. It won’t break anything.

    2. I tried it and the only issue (major one) is the camera app FCs when taking a standard picture. Photosphere works great as does the gallery viewer for it. I’m on AOKP running KT747 kernel.

  3. Has anyone who installed this noticed any real differences in Apps liek Cal/Talk etc. GMAIL and the Keyboard/Camera I know are different but wondering if any of the other core apps have changed

    1. yes. Gmail has pinch to zoom. camera has photo sphere, Panorama mode and the new finger tap control. The entire clock app has a very nice overhaul (really like it). don’t use talk and the calender seems to be unchanged. The gallery also looks a bit different. The keyboard has the swype option… overall I’d say give it a shot. works perfect (tested on galaxy s 4.1 mackay)

      1. the one change i see in calendar is that it greys out past appointments on the widget. kinda of a nice add on for those of us who heavily use exchange at work.

        1. I’ve had that since 4.1

    2. The keyboard is wonderful, as is the new alarm clock app. Gmail now has pinch to zoom. The camera app. is nice, but I’m no expert. Haven’t even looked at the calendar yet.

  4. Will this work with CM10?

    1. If i wasnt at work id test it out. Back up, flash. Let us know how it goes. Restoring a back up is simple.

    2. Worked with my GS2 running CM10, so it should work for you

    3. I have it working w/ an unofficial build of CM10 for the EVO 4G LTE… GAPPS package seems to work great, but I get unsupported device with that wallet build.

  5. has anyone successfully flashed these over on a gsm Galaxy nexus?

    1. yes–flashed them onto my GSM Nexus–however realized today that i can’t beam photos to my brother (vzw gnex) who also flashed this zip. i can beam maps/apps,etc–but for some reason Beam won’t transfer photos any longer. so, check if you flash it.

      1. You might want to remove the dalvik cache and other caches … weird crap happens if you change core apps like these and don’t do this. Also, fixing perms helps.

  6. Awesome! Now I just need everyone stop downloading until I’m done. Thanks!

    1. Lol. That’s why I tend to wait on things like this.

  7. Looking forward to that final build of the 4.2 keyboard in APK format… I really wanna try it out before purchasing SwiftKey…

    1. Swiftkey (which is a great great keyboard) is close to releasing Swiftkey Flow (pretty much Swiftkey + Swype)… I’m liking the leaked 4.2 apk but I’m really looking forward to Flow.

  8. keep getting a bad download. MD5 not checking out right

  9. Does this work on rooted Verizon Nex running stock 4.1.1 ROM? I guess I’ll find out in about 10 min

    1. The answer is no… lol

    2. looks like you have to be running a custom ROM and not stock

  10. Confirmed working on ATT GS2 running CM10. Nothing force closes, everything running smoothly.

  11. download link not working, anyone know another link?

  12. Do you have to be Rooted to get this?

  13. is there a reason why this file was not uploaded to a torrent site?

  14. Its a big old file at 155 MB

  15. I’ve noticed that the Calendar app now shows other Calendars that you’ve added to it. For instances, I’ve added the Redskins calender, but never been able to view it on my mobile devices before now.

  16. I’m hoping they update Google Music soon.

  17. Does anybody know how to make the default view for the calender ‘month’ instead of ‘day’ or ‘week’? Thanks in advance

  18. seems to run well on my One V running PACman
edit: and nexus 7 running CM10

  19. If you had troubles with crashing after flashing the Google Apps, take a look here, i am troubleshooting it in this thread, and managed to solve all problems but “Launcher force closing” one

  20. Running just fine on Samsung Galaxy S [CM10]

  21. Bricked my fucking phone. This is only for deodexed, non-stock ROMS.

    1. Same here. VZW Gnex – bricked.

Quentyn: You REALLY should have done your homework on this one before hitting post (and so should have I).

Tried to have VZW store fix it – they were stumped. Replacement on it’s way. Be careful w/ this one kiddies.
