Shazam expands its tagging capabilities, can now identify TV shows

12

If you watch enough TV, you have probably seen a commercial or two with Shazam logo in the corner urging you to head to the app to instantly obtain more info about the advertised product. But that’s not the only way Shazam is getting tied into TV. The folks behind the song identification app have quietly been rolling out the ability to tag television shows, with the goal being to provide additional info about a show such as the cast and credits rather than provide identification.

The functionality has been built into the current version of Shazam, but the company has been keeping the feature on the down-low until only recently. So if you were to tune into your favorite show right now, you should be able to pull up additional info. And it should be a lot easier with full TV shows. Those 30-second commercials are usually over before the app can even finish processing what is being watched.

  1. Shazam, please create a hum feature for those songs stuck in my head! Soundhound has it, but it’s catalog isn’t quite up to par.

    1. I’ve found that normally if one doesn’t reconize a song neither does the other, but a few times shazam couldn’t soundhound came through. I also started using soundhound over shazam because shazam doesn’t work on half of the roms I flash but soundhound always does.

      1. I listen to mostly house and trance, and soundhound just seems to never know songs.

        1. Ah, see… there’s the problem right there — you are listening to the wrong type of “music” :p

          1. Music is Music, regardless if you like his Genre or not. We all have varying tastes in music. Me, I like Black Metal, and there’s no reason Shazam should not recognize those songs either.

          2. Shazam is actually pretty solid (although far from perfect) with house and trance and can even nail some obscure remixes. It does miss a lot though.

Soundcloud on the other hand is really bad with house and trance lol.

        2. I don’t know if this is your problem… so don’t take offense if I am way off the mark here. :-p

Try turning the volume down… I’ve found there’s definitely a sweet spot on the volume to get it to work faster and accurately.

  2. I tried to shazam a song that was playing on Friends and when I tried it gave me the show with the cast. This was weeks ago so they’ve had this for a little while.

  3. Does the info button on the digitial cable remote not provide enough information? How much more info do you need when watching ‘Cake Boss’ or ‘Walking Dead’? I already know the cast of ‘Walking Dead’ and do not care who the key grip is that works on ‘Cake Boss’. Don’t get me wrong, it is an interesting idea, I just don’t see any real use for it.

  4. The only thing that sucks about this feature is if your trying to get a song from the tv, you get the show info instead.

  5. I’ve used this app 5 times. All 5 times it did not recognize the songs. Has anyone had similar results?

  6. I tried with an episode of Seinfeld earlier and thought it would just give me basic info about the show but it actually identified the exact episode and gave even the smaller parts info on the cast.
