As expectations grow for Apple’s next generation iPhone, Google is attempting to take away some of that spot light announcing today that Android activations have officially hit 500 million globally. Google’s Hugo Barra revealed the news via Google+, mentioning again that 1.3 million Android devices are activated each and every day.

In other news — Google’s Jelly Bean statue has returned to the Google plex after the last version melted with the heat. This new and improved Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean statue now features a traditional green Android head, matching more closely the offiical Jelly Bean mascot we’ve all come to love. How are you liking the new look?

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

    500 million devices

    1. or ransom for all the worlds iPhones.

  2. stop humpin the frickin lazer mini-droid

  3. I wish that statue were there when I went to visit last week. =/

    1. When i visited, the Eclair was floating in muddy water.

      1. The ICS statue is by far the best there is. So sexy I could eat it

  4. and 400 million still on gingerbread.

    1. Lmao!

  5. So it that 500 million unique IMEI’s? I have factory reset many phones and reinstalled from the beginning. Do they count as a separate activation? What about after I’ve sold a phone and it is reused? 500 million seems inflated…?

    1. How many times can this be answered? Yes, even if you reflash your phone, drop it in water blah blah blah! 1 is recorded for the first (1st) time the phone gets activated.

      1. Well I’ve read this type of article at 100million, 200million etc and never have seen it mentioned. I would not asked if articles were clearer! So was your yes that each time it is activated it counts as one? It was not clear!

        1. The first time, very first time the phone is activated counts as an activation. Now if I took that brand new phone that I just activated for the first and only time and I flash a new ROM to it, that resets everything on the phone and does nothing for the activation counter. Each handset can only be activated once and only once.

          1. OK Thank you. Makes sense. That is a lot of Android devices!

          2. Apple ain’t got nothing on this!

          3. I seriously doubt Google would even want to present a number like that that could be so far off. What you’re saying could imply the number of first time activations is half or less.

          4. But then maybe you did not care enough to think about it that much. That’s what my excuse would probably be :-/
