Force Android 4.0.4 OTA on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus – No more waiting or hacking necessary

62

The Android 4.0.4 update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus has taken too long to get here. I don’t know about you, guys, but I am too tired of waiting. And if you feel like me and haven’t gotten your OTA update yet, you will want to try this little technique.

This trick forces your Galaxy Nexus to download the OTA. No, you do not need root or any type of hackery. You just need to go into the settings and do a few taps.

Here is what you have to do:

  • Go to settings>Apps>All
  • Tap Google Services Framework
  • Tap on Clear Data and then Force Stop
  • Go to About Settings>About Phone>Check for Updates

After that, you should be all set, and your update should start downloading. I have personally tried it, and it is working like a charm. So check it out and let us know how it works!

  1. It works but for me I had to disable google framework services and back out go back in and renable it .then clear data. And go to system update.

    1. It worked for me, following your instructions (took 3 tries)! Thank you so very much!

    2. To those who try this method (not sure it has any greater effect than just repeating the one in the main post), don’t freak out if you can’t find your Google Framework Services after disabling it. As a disabled app, it falls down to the bottom of the list (not in alphabetical order like before).

    3. Tried this too. :(

    4. Thank you! Blok’s addendum made this work for me! Been tired of waiting. If the next update takes this long, I will more seriously consider alternative methods to getting them on my phone.

    5. Thanks!

  2. I’ve tried this several times in different combinations and I haven’t gotten it to work. If anyone figures it out please post it.

  3. I got the update pushed to me last night! (Portland, OR) It was the most exciting thing I’ve seen on my phone in months. Seems to have improved some things, snappier scrolling, quicker orientation changing, camera app works better. But, the signal doesn’t seem to have changed at all except that it now sometimes tells me I have three bars for the exact same dBms it used to say 2 bars. Also I’m hoping there won’t be anymore random reboots. The 3G/4G switching is fairly improved. All in all, a nice update, but not a game changer by any means. Although I wasn’t having all the audio problems that other people were.

  4. It was fun to try but not a thing. Another dick tease.

  5. Ok so this is the order:
Go to settings>Apps>AllTap Google Services FrameworkTap on Force StopThen Tap Clear Data the back out to the main settings pageGo to Settings>About Phone>Check for UpdatesThat should work. Try it a few times if it doesn’t work on the first try.

  6. the method Mr. Blok used worked for me. YAY!

  7. Managed to make it work after a few tries and once disabling Google Services Framework (thanks for the suggestion Mr.Blok).

My GNex currently is just a test device and thus does not have a SIM in it (or at least not an activated SIM, I forget).

  8. This isn’t any different than just changing the date which does the same thing as check now also you can’t pull an update on stock Android it has to be on the que but have fun even though you were going to get it anyway

  9. Worked like a charm.

  10. Thank you!

  11. Just tried this about 10 different ways. No dice. =(

    1. Hey, there we go. Took about 10-12 tries before it finally pulled.

  12. Mine worked first try! Awesome, thanks!

  13. Hot Damn that worked for me. Had to do it several times, but it finally took.

  14. Has this worked for anyone sporting the IMM30B build?

  15. Worked for me after 2 tries here in Charleston S.C.

  16. It took about 10 tries, but it worked for me.

  17. Who the hell buys a Nexus device and waits for official updates?

    1. people who simply want a pure google phone and “timely” updates. at least i have 50% of what i bargained for (i finally got 4.0.4 today)

    2. Me

    3. Me

    4. My job requires I have a completely stock phone. I have rooted past devices and understand the perks of the Nexus but for me, it’s clearly the best phone for my situation.

  18. I followed Mr. Blok’s instructions and it worked. No more spamming the update button for me.

  19. Much better reception. Getting 3 bars where I used to get 1 in my house. Snappier too.

  20. That didn’t work for me…guess I’ll just have to wait…BRING IT ON!

  21. Worked first try!! Thanks! UI definitely feels snappier!

  22. DOES THIS TRICK WORK FOR ANY PHONE OR JUST GALAXY NEXUS?

    1. I was wondering the same thing… Wishful thinking for my Droid RAZR Maxx. :-(

  23. Nexus you dick

  24. Worked on the first try.

  25. Worked on the first try! Sweet!

  26. First try = like a charm

  27. Worked the first time. +1. Took a total of ~15minutes.

Wayyy smoother UI, buttery smooth. Increased signal. Still have to wait and test out the battery life improvement. No luck on the Google Wallet update trick (still have the older version, from side loading). Also, seemed to update all the stock apps: Books, Music, Messenger etc..

  28. Thank you Edgar!!! I was getting tired of waiting for this update. First, the Verizon wait 5 1/2 months fiasco and then for the OTA to get to my phone. I basically followed Edgar’s directions the first time, Mr. Blok’s the second time. The third time, I followed Mr. Blok’s but instead of checking for the update, I powered the phone down and back up. That worked. Not sure if powering down did anything, but I got the update. YEAH!!!

  29. Took me about 10 tries, trying everything listed below! Thank you so much, I thought I’d never get the update. (Screw you Verizon!)

  30. Got my update Friday Night!!

  31. Verizon is pretty pathetic. My phone has never had a stabke 4G connection at my house. Can barely connect then get kicked down to 3G and usually 1X. Now my phone shows 3 bars of 4G but the DB and ASU haven’t changed a bit. When I try to use data I still get kicked down to 1X. This is such bullshit! I pay a premium to be on verizon and I have friends that get far better service on sprint.

  32. Worked perfect for me, tried 6xs, but it worked as described.

  33. It worked perfectly for mine and my wife’s phone

  34. Do this and it will work first try.
    1. Clear data and force stop framework. THEN WAIT AND GO BACK INTO FRAMEWORK. WAIT FOR RESTART. IT WILL SAY 72KB STARTED IF CORRECT (AS OPPOSED TO 80)

    2. Go and look for the update now. If you do it too fast it doesn’t work.

Wait for the Google.framework to restart!

  35. F**k ya this shit worked on the second try!!!!! THANKS A MILLION!!!

  36. Is this some kind of sick, twisted joke? I tried this on my Galaxy Nexus and am now running Android 1.1 with all kinds of initialization errors.

Just kidding. Worked great. 4.04 is a big improvement. :)

  37. This process worked for me on the first try. Thanks phandroid… as for Verizon u need some slaps seriously.

  38. Worked like a charm the first time, Thank You. ( Get your act together VERIZON!!)

  39. finally update, update dated april…..wow what a fubar experience…..the way the update trick made it’s way online reminds me of early osx days!! what a trip!

  40. font bug is fixed, using huge now, no distortions, landscape typing lag fixed, battery seemed to last 3x longer yesterday, for real, seems like a lot of undocumented fixes, it’s like the os that should have been on the phone dec 15th!!

  41. Worked on 2nd try for me. Really big improvements.

  42. did it till I was blue in the face and nada. too bad. would have been nice.

  43. I got the update pretty much right after it was announced, and it did seem to speed up my GNex and smooth things out. HOWEVER, I swear to goodness it’s killing my battery! Has anyone else reported battery life *worse* after the 4.0.4 update?

    1. I would have to say i’ve seen the same thing!

  44. worked the first time for me…signal got 3 bars better after update, phones running like a beast!!!!

  45. Wow! Even I could figure it out! Took a few tries but SHAZAAM! Thanks!!!

  46. worked lika a charm first try. im so excited its about time.

  47. Worked like a charm… on the 3rd try. Been waiting for this all week so that I can finally format the NFC tags I bought.

  48. Took me about 10 tries, but is downloading now. Thank you.

  49. It worked as far as getting the update, so thanks! But I seem to have another problem, after rebooting to install, I get stuck on an image of the Android mascot with his panel open and a red warning triangle above it.

  50. Is this fixing the handover issue for anyone? What radio is it running after the update? I am using Team KANG’s Rom (build 36) and the radio (I515.09 V.FC04 / I515.FC05) found here:

    http://androidcommunity.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-4-0-4-radios-improve-3g4g-download-20120502/

Anyone have anything to say about this?

Which radio is this OTA providing you guys?

Settings>About Phone>Baseband Version: is where you can look up the radio you are running.

    Thank you much.
