Now that Sprint is moving full steam ahead on the high seas of LTE, the carrier has been busy repurposing its WiMAX airwaves for use with its subsidiary networks. Virgin Mobile USA will be the first to benefit with the announcement of the service provider’s initial 4G lineup. Included are a couple of mobile hotspots, but the real jewel is the HTC EVO V 4G. It’s not a WiMAX version of the EVO 4G LTE, but it is a Virgin Mobile-branded version of the EVO 3D priced at $300 with no contractual obligations. The new WiMAX devices will be available for sale on May 31st, concurrently with the arrival of WiMAX speeds prices as low as $35 per month.

The versatile Overdrive Pro™ 3G/4G mobile hotspot by Sierra Wireless ($149.99) and the powerful U600 3G/4G USB Stick by Franklin Wireless ($99.99) provide customers two ways to stay connected at 4G speeds. “The launch of these two devices demonstrates our commitment to bring 4G speeds and innovation to our Broadband2Go customers who chose to forgo a contract as well,” said Auman.

All three devices will operate on Sprint’s 3G and 4G (WiMAX) network and be available beginning on May 31 at VirginMobileUSA.com. They will then be available in June at major retailers and at select independent dealers nationwide.

  3. Boy, Virgin Mobile customers are in for a disappointing surprise…

    1. why do you say that?

      1. I had friends who bought Sprint WiMAX phones and the 4G speeds really weren’t impressive. T-Mo’s and AT&T’s HSPA+ were faster. Although Xorg makes a wonderful argument above.

    2. Considering the abysmal 3G speeds VM has now, anything will be an improvement.

  5. Why-max?

  6. Not sure if this was said already… but shouldn’t we call it “Why-max”?

  7. Makes sense to use WiMAX for the pre-paid networks to differentiate from the other pre-paids. May as well have something than no 4G at all and it will at least in some areas take load off the 3G network. I’m getting 6-8Mbps and sometimes up to 12Mbps on Epic Touch lately. As Sprint users move to LTE, it will provide even more WiMAX bandwidth. Granted, only where available, and Virgin tends to only focus on urban markets, where WiMAX mostly is.

    1. Actually that logic does make a lot of sense. And since Sprint in the majority share holder of Clearwire, they might as well get some use (and revenue) out of their investment.

  8. Well sprints WiMAX here in Oregon is pretty decent I’ve seen people get up to 15mbps but it doesn’t work well inside most places. But as long as you have WiFi this seems interesting.

  9. Ah!? So that’s whats going to happen to WiMax. I was wondering what was going to happen to their WiMax network.

    1. Clearwire will likely keep WiMAX going for several more years as they transition to LTE. Sprint probably won’t want them to shut it down until Sprint gets its WiMAX users over to LTE, which will likely be a few years. Clear has so much spectrum they could do WiMAX and LTE together for quite a while.

  10. EVO’s for Boost and Virgin are launching with Android 4.0 ICS….. wonder when the Sprint EVO’s will get it… Bust be soon now! (right?)
