Chrome for Android to soon lose beta tag

16

Chrome for Android could shed its beta tag “in a matter of weeks,” said Sunday Pichai shortly after the release of the app’s latest update. Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome and Apps, addressed the apps status in an interview with CNET, saying the major focus is on providing a stable, bug-free experience for users, a task his team at Google is currently tackling.

Chrome for Android first appeared on what was then called the Android Market back in February, and this week’s update, which brought desktop view functionality and homescreen bookmarks, is considered the second beta iteration of the browser. The timing means we could see a “stable” release of Chrome for Android just in time for Google I/O.

  1. Does this mean that it will work on non-ICS Android?

    1. I doubt this’ll ever happen, 4.0+ is likely to have mass adoption by next year, so it wouldn’t be worth Google investing in development for older versions at this point. Without all the ICS goodness it probably wouldn’t be much better than the stock Browser anyway.

  2. That’s great, but how about a little gingerbread love?

    1. There is a hacked version that works with GB @ xda. At least for the Droid Razr.

  3. HUGE day for Google with this, Google Drive, and the Takju (US GSM) Galaxy Nexus.

  4. Flash is up to Adobe, not Google. Also YouTube and many other video types are still supported. And there probably will never be a non-ICS version of Chrome. It relies on new stuff only available in ICS.

    1. Not entirely. And there is a hacked Chrome beta that works on non-ICS phones @ xda

  5. Useless without flash and permanent desktop mode…

    1. THIS.

  6. Needs the thumb menu!!!!

  7. We gave firefox a hard time over flash.. and they got it in. I gotta say, yes.. it still is that important to alot of us.

  8. I really am trying to like Chrome for Android, but I just can’t.

  9. No flash = pass.

    1. Flash will be out come Jelly Bean anyway so might as well get used to it (wouldn’t surprise me if Chrome replaces the default browser by then anyway).

  10. I’ve been using it for a few days on the leaked ICS OTA for the Rezound.  I’ve already replaced the stock browser with it.  It’s faster and i like how all the mechanics are layed out.  If i need flash that bad, I will use the stock browser.
