14

Chrome Beta was updated in the Android Mar- er, Google Play (that’s going to take some getting used to). Details from the Google Chrome release blog say version 0.16.4301.233 is mostly bug fixes with a pinch of improved compatibility with devices running various versions of Android 4.0. This should also include those of you who were running custom ROMs. So, if the app wasn’t launching previously, you might want to give it another go.

Known issues:

  • 112923 : No way to toggle between mobile/desktop UA
  • 113140 : Youtube links do not prompt for which application to use
  • 113132 : Chrome for Android beta doesn’t support configured proxy in wi-fi settings
  • Other notable issues listed here

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. It’s not actually called Google Play on the device.  Google Play is the overall media system.  It’s Play Shop on the phone.  Or you can call it Shop for short. ;)

    1. Actually, it’s Play Store not shop. :)

  2. sweet a chrome update ive been using it from day one love this browser

  3. Isn’t it now called Google Play Chrome?

  4. Is there a Chromium for Android, or is this a closed source project? Just wondering…

  5. Recently switched from Firefox to Chrome on my desktop (for speed), and am now giving Chrome for Android a try. Liking it so far, especially the tab sync (even though tab sync only goes in one direction for now – desktop-to-mobile – while bookmarks and other go both directions)

  6. yayyy finally got support back on my tab 10.1 with cyan 9 alpha 0

  7. i don’t understand why google couldn’t make this app available for honeycomb also… honeycomb is a tablet OS and its browser is not really good, so why not make this for honeycomb devices especially when some manufuckturers are not willing to update their supposedly high-end devices ( hello LG – *rolleyes*) ..

    ugghhh

  8. I’d be happy with just adding a home button.  Still in beta, so who knows what goodness is coming.

  9. Still waiting on text reflow for Chrome for Android, that’s the most important thing right now for me. And hiding the address bar would be nice too XD

  10. Worthless on a tablet until changing the user agent is added.

    1. AMEN.

  11. Still doesn’t fix embedded YouTube videos not playing, at least not on my stock Asus transformer original:

    example http://i.autoblog.com/2012/03/04/kia-k9-caught-in-motion-on-south-korean-roads/

  12. I put it on my Fascinate. It feels like its a memory hog. I used it for a few days and just felt like it slowed my device down. I went back to ICS stock browser which is still very similar.

Edit: Just looked and the stock ICS browser was pushing around maybe 3mb of space with about 8mb in cache. Chrome beta was pushing like 50mb install with who knows in cache.
