After All of This Time… the Samsung Continuum Receives Android 2.2 (Yes, .2)

12

Well, I almost completely forgot that this phone existed. The Galaxy S Phone with a pointless secondary display may have bowed out of the market unwanted, but that doesn’t stop Samsung and Verizon from supporting it with updates. The device has finally gotten an update to a new major version of Android and that version is Android 2.2. That’s not a typo.

Sure, it launched on 2.1 and never did get its Gingerbread update like its “fascinating” cousin, but it’s 2012. Froyo has a lot of nice features over Eclair, but again – it’s 2012.

And even though the phone was seen as DOA, it’s no less capable than the Samsung Fascinate. This might not be the last update, though, so we can’t say for sure if they will be done after this. Just give your lungs a break and don’t hold your breath. Do any of our readers even own this phone? [Verizon via Droid-Life]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I actually thought the second display was something useful. Like not having to turn on the entire display to read a text message or a missed call notification instead of unlocking the phone and going through your notification bar seemed like it could have caught on. I don’t own the phone, but it was cool to play around with. It’s too bad it never got updates before this.

  2. yeah, i own a galaxy s   or Fascinate.  dont know why its always spoken poorly of, seems ok for what i need, only a very occasional reboot, all is good. WTF?

  3. What about less time spent updating things nobody will care about a more time working on that ICS port? You’d think having access to the ICS source code through its entire development would result LESS than a 3 month wait for your other handsets, especially the Galaxy SII…

  4. Oh sammy, its good youre providing but some support but why bother with .2?

  5. Indeed, I know the 1 guy who bought this phone.  He shall be happy to know (aka won’t care at all) that he is finally getting a 2-yr old software update.  And yes he really likes the ticker display down there (which I thought was a pretty cool idea, actually).

  6. Well, my mother-in-law will be thrilled. Or at least she’ll have another reason to call me with a tech question. She has one of these, got it on the last day for VZW’s unlimited data last summer.

  7. Wow, I knew that custom little LED screen on the bottom would mean custom rom updates and long wait times for rom updates but didnt think it would be this long, that is ridiculous.  I would be so upset if that was my phone, though I would have ditched it long ago.  I learned my lesson the Epic Galaxy S waiting for froyo and GB.  I stick to pure google phones now.  Nexus FTMFW

  8. My brother in law has this phone. At least it’s a step in the right direction, but I don’t see this phone getting any more updates after this.

  9. I did not know this phone even existed.

  10. LOL, this phone! I remember the announcement, we all thought they will reveal the Nexus S, and all we got was this crap… :D

  11. Still though, the jump from 2.1 to 2.2 was big and did bring a lot more functionality.  It’s late, but for the people who own one, it’s an improvement.

  12. This will be the headline when LG/att wake the f#ck up and give us Thrill owners 2.3.
