RIM Courting Suitors, Samsung Said to Be in the Lead

15

Is RIM looking to shake things up with the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer? If reports coming out of BGR hold any truth that is exactly how the maker of the BlackBerry OS would like to see things pan out. The Canadian smartphone maker is still looking for a potential buyer and the latest insider information puts Samsung at the front of the pack. Samsung already handles two operating systems with Google’s Android and their own in-house platform bada, so it is unclear where RIM would fit into the equation, but the potential acquisition has RIM’s stock on the rise. It’s hard to imagine Samsung taking the foot off the gas with Android as they have been mopping up with their Galaxy line of phones and tablets and is renewing interest in bada as it merges the OS with Intel’s Tizen. Would Samsung take on BlackBerry? Or would the OS be phased out and the real interest be placed in hardware designs and patents? It’s too early to tell. We’ll have to see where RIM lands first.

  1. You lost me at “BGR” and “truth”.

Also, I would imagine this is about patents for Sammy.

    1. Hopefully its also about hardware!! cuz the current hardware on sammy phones suck. I’ve experienced the galaxy S II, nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus. Pathetic.

      1. I think you are hugely mistaken.

      2. LOL I’m sure Google disagree’s with you.

      3. While everyone else is disagreeing with this comment, I am taking it as a knock on the plastic-ness of Samsung’s offerings, not criticizing the device, overall.

I would have to agree – while I love the SII and both Samsung Nexii, they are both brilliant displays with cheap plastic backing.

      4. Samsung makes the best displays on a phone. i do agree about the cheap plastic tho. plastic on a $400+ item is like what? make a galaxy nexus with an aluminum body and watch Sammy straight up run the fuck out of phones to sell.

  2. A lot of the the time when a manufacturer gets big enough, they get interested in selling apps, music, and movies and getting ad revenue. I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted to take on a new OS.

    1. they do.

  3. Samsung buying RIM? That just sounds odd to me. RIM needs a new exectuive team, the company can be turned around but not with the current team.

  4. @Zoomie What What What?????

  5. There’s nothing physical that RIM owns that Samsung would be interested in.  RIM’s device designs are stuck in 2001 and their operating system is truly a tragedy of usability.

The patents and IP that RIM owns is what Samsung would likely be interested in.

  6. I’d like to see RIM turn their line of hardware into running Android with BB OS tweaks

    1. I would like to see Samsung buy them and turn the BlackBerry line into business oriented Android phones (physical keyboards, maybe a more business friendly UI, fancy email client, etc.)

  7. patents, patents, patents.

  8. What would all the “plastic haters” have their phones manufactured with?  Machined Brass, Solid blocks of Aluminum, etc??  I for one think the GN is beautifully made and until HTC makes HTC ONE I think plastic is what we have to work with…unless you buy an iPhone and then its all glass.
