Forget waiting until the showroom floors open, LG has already taken the wraps off of their upcoming Google TV powered “Smart TV” in a press release. LG’s “Smart TV with Google TV” will feature Cinema 3D functionality (for use with the same 3D glasses used in movie theaters) and a new UI on top of regular ‘ol Android Honeycomb. Also included is a “Magic Remote” with a QWERTY keyboard but unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until CES to get our hands and eyes on it. What do you guys think? Do you see an LG television in your future?

SEOUL, Jan. 6, 2012 -– LG Electronics (LG) will introduce its highly anticipated Google TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. LG Smart TV with Google TV combines the familiarity of Google’s Android OS with the convenience and comfort of LG’s 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and attractive home entertainment option.

“LG has constantly strived to provide consumers with wider choices in home entertainment that bring the highest level of sophistication and convenience,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Through Google TV, LG has merged Google’s established Android operating system with LG’s proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience.”

LG’s Google TV’s most attractive feature is its ease of use, thanks to the combination of its Android-based user interface and the Magic Remote Qwerty designed by LG. LG’s Google TV’s user interface and main screen have been designed for convenient browsing and content selection. Multi-tasking is also possible, as the search, social networking and TV functions can be run simultaneously. The user interface can be accessed using the Magic Remote Qwerty which combine the user-friendly benefits of LG’s Magic Remote with a QWERTY keyboard.

Equipped with LG’s own CINEMA 3D technology, Google TV provides a home entertainment experience that is immersive, comfortable and convenient. Based on LG’s own Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, CINEMA 3D glasses are battery-free, comfortable and lightweight. The glasses are also very affordable, making LG’s Google TV ideal for viewing by a large group of family and friends when used in 3D mode. And with a single click of the remote, any 2D program or movie can be viewed in 3D, thanks to the built-in 2D to 3D conversion engine.

Alongside Google TV, LG will continue to advance its own Smart TV platform based on NetCast, which will be available in more than 60 percent of LG’s flat panel TVs scheduled for introduction over the coming year. With a growing collection of content and services, LG’s Smart TV platform will continue to provide consumers with a unique user experience.

The first demonstration of LG’s Google TV will take place at the LG Electronics Press Conference on January 9.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. I’m assuming this will mean access to 3D Youtube videos. I was always puzzled from the start as to why Google TV didn’t have 3D, but it’s probably due to hardware limitations of the Atom processor used. Hopefully the new Marvell processors do Google TV more justice.

    1. because the TV has to be 3D capable too and i could see a lot of people throwing a fit because they bought a 3d google tv but can’t watch 3D…

      1. It’s no different than buying a 3D Blu-Ray player for a non-3D TV. Yeah, it’s kind of pointless in the short term if you only have a 2D TV, but it’s future proofing for a future 3D TV.

  2. sweet! when I purchased my Google TV, it was that or a 3DTV it took me an hour in the store to make up my mind, lol. Now they are combining them, best thing since….peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

    1. I’d hate it… I think Roku has the right idea, how can I upgrade my Google TV hardware for place-shifting down the road when it’s built in the tv?  I’d rather not spend another $1500+ to get better hardware that could’ve been standalone for ~ $150

      1. It comes with your TV, you can always have a Roku next to it. Also, you don’t necessarily need to upgrade your hardware as Google TV isn’t subjected to the same fragmentation as with smartphones.

        Most TV’s already have a smart-platform.

  3. tv’s are more up lg’s alley. should be nice

  4. I foresee a purchase in my future

  5. Damn, I was hoping they’d have pricing available. I’m planning on buying a new TV this year, but I’m not gonna spend more on this than I would on a car…

  6. Zero interest if 3D only.  If 2D available, intense interest.

  7. My brother in law got the 47inch 240htz 3d tv from lg and I love it. I love the passive 3d glasses. Plus its thin and its led. It can only better with this updated version. It all depends on the price. I’m still looking at getting the same one and adding the logitech revue. I guess well see. All I know is that lg took me away from Sony and Samsung tvs.

  8. LG needs to unveil gb for my Thrill

  9. I’m buying one. I’m actually ready to buy one now without google tv, but I will wait till this comes out. The money is under my pillow. I’m ready:)

  10. If Google won’t have a say on what kind of crappy hardware manufacturers put GTV on, then it’ll fail the second generation too. LG obviously see a chance to sell more unwanted 3D TV sets, thinking that if they slap Google logo on it, it’ll fly off the shelves. I have a surprise for you LG – it won’t. Make it 2D only, don’t try up-sell the 3D crap on me.

    1. when i was purchasing my tv the 47 inch lg infina the price dif between 3d and non 3d was about 50$ ..so i said screw it and it was a good move because tonight friday night fights is backkk and thats brodcast in 3d

  11. this is great news i currently own an lg infinia 3d tv its amazing best tv out look it up the the current ui is great but with google im sure it will be amazing the magic motion (wii style ) remote makes the tv its just great i was wondering why the new magic motion remote had voice recognition and now i know why voice actions from android !
wooo i wish my current tv was upgradable but i gurantee not lol
and btw 3d ob this tv is great slim comfortable glasses as opposed to the huge sony ones
best thing i can do is stream 3d video wirelessly using the evo 3ds DNLA
    shits sickkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  12. No thanks on the 3D, i wont put 3D glasses on to watch a movie unless its at an IMAX. Ill wait for the TVs with 4D where u wont need glasses, lol. But nice TV….already got a Revue, so wont be needing an upgrade till late next year.

  13. I’ll take one but without the 3d.
