Kindle Fire Receives Early Build Of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich [Video]

16

You had to see this coming and many of you have actually been waiting for this moment. Android’s first successful “budget” tablet — the Kindle Fire — has finally gotten its taste of Ice Cream Sandwich thanks to the tireless Android modding community who dropped a pre-alpha AOSP ROM for the device early today.

Just how pre-alpha is this build you ask? Liliputing provided a video of Kindle Fire running ICS and I’d have to say, it doesn’t look too shabby. While still very much a work-in-progress, the processor seems to handle the ROM quite smoothly with most of the kinks coming form the software side of things where audio and video functionality are currently broken. Developers did manage to find a fix for the SD card storage problem they were having where the device wouldn’t recognize internal storage. Progress seems to be moving along nicely.

Special thanks to JackpotClavin for getting the pre-alpha ROM up and running. For the adventurous or extremely curious, you can hit up the XDA source link for all the downloads and Liliputing put together a handy quick guide for getting it up and running on your rooted Kindle Fire. If you guys decide to give it a try, check back in here and let us know how it went.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Looking good! Wish I’d actually won one now :p

    1. Haha! Me too, Adam… me too……. =p

      1. With all the holidroid contests, I’m surprised you didn’t, you know.. being staff and all ;D

      2. Im surprised that the staff didn’t have their own contest.

      3. edited:(question resolved)

  2. I’ve got news for you. Nook Color was “Android’s first successful “budget” tablet”. The fact that Amazon just leveraged their existing customer base and the Kindle trademark doesn’t make it more “first successful” than the tablet that 1 year ago turned a lot of people into B&N customers.

    1. Has the color been rooted to ICS yet ?

    2. Nook color wasn’t close to being a “tablet” until the mod community got involved.  The Fire, and now the Nook Tablet are the first “successful” budget tablets. Who came first?  Who gives a shit but your comment drips of pathetic fanboydom.

      1. Stupid Pinky, just plain stupid. In what line here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051VVOB2/ref=sa_menu_kdpo3 does Amazon call fire a tablet? I’ll give you a hint – nowhere. It’s because their tablet is still due to be revealed. They positioned Fire as an advanced e-reader/entertainment, just as B&N did NC. And of coarse both things become tablets only after rooting and flashing a custom ROM, there ain’t no dumbasses here. Only iSheeps think that the factory firmware truly reflects what a device can do.
P.S.: Do you really think that discussing one Android device over another one makes people fanboys? I just made a note about not completely correct statement, that’s all.

  3. Until these KF devs start working together, these ROMs will never mature. I swear I read earlier this morning on XDA Forums that Jackpot dropped support for his ROM on like 12/14 because someone else started a ROM right after him. I think they should work together to get a solid ICS ROM, and then split off and do their own thing. That is why I loved my Eris back in the day. Once everyone got stuff stabilized, and quickly, some of the best ROMs ever were created.

    1. Ahh, guess I should watch the video first next time before commenting. Seems JC wants some help.

  4. After a bit of help from the dev community (Vashypooh, HeWhoWas, and others) I got my kindle fire rooted and running this early build. It’s kind of shaky and there are still several things to work out, but ICS is just beautiful on this. I’m grateful such great devs are behind the fire.

  5. My friend called the Kindle Fire his “most disappointing Christmas present…worse than the 3 pair of socks which I’ll actually use.”
After watching some exciting videos on this fanpage: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kindle-Fire-Reviews/286968834679702 about this Ereader, I thought to buy it, but then again, I don’t want to experience the disappointment my friend had after the purchase.

    1. Its not for everyone, if your looking for the full tablet experience then it will definitely be a let down, if your looking for a bigger ipod touch it will be a let down. I love it because I’m going to be reading books, netflix, web browsing and games. Pretty much anyone who wants it for something that takes up a lot of storage will be disappointed. Can’t wait to get a new phone so I can tether this thing to it and have wifi everywhere

  6. the screen on my Ainol novo7 paladin stopped working o.o i mean it works it’s press the physical buttons but the touchscreen system thingy stopped working~looks at clock~about an hour ago i know this probly isnt the place to post this but i couldnt find anywhere else can anyone help me? it not working is freaking me out. :(
