Samsung, Intel and Sprint Announcing New Smartphone At CES 2012?

31

Some big announcements could be made at CES 2012 in January according to AndroidandMe who has it on good authority that Samsung Mobile will release the first Intel powered Android phone and it could be making its way to Sprint. Let’s try and piece everything together.

It’s been rumored that Samsung could be getting out of the PC business but has reportedly extended their partnership with Intel. Strange, what would a renewed partnership with Intel bring? You guessed it — smartphones.

We told you guys a few weeks back that Intel was waiting on Ice Cream Sandwich before arriving on the scene with an Android smartphone and today, PCWorld is reporting that Intel already has Android 4.0 up and running on a device powered by their Atom processor (also known as Medfield) and is currently working with manufacturers to get everything optimized on those devices.

Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, is scheduled to give a keynote at CES 2012 and has been touting to AllThingsD, their Atom processor’s superiority over ARM’s chips in graphics, javascript and browser performance. Not so much in the battery department (no surprise there) where they came in around 3rd and 4th.

Intel wont be the only ones dropping bombs at CES. Sprint too, is gearing up for a big announcement January 10th at CES and what else could it be but another one of their famous “industry first” keynotes announcing an Intel powered smartphone running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? I know it sounds crazy — crazy like a FOX.

Exciting things in store for next year and you can rest assured knowing the entire Phandroid team will be on hand at CES 2012 bringing you guys all the latest in just a little more than 40 days. I’m ready, packed and moist.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

    Gross!!!! Too much info

    1. Or not enough… O_o

      1. o_O

  4. Galaxy Nexus with intel processor for sprint????? Does the intel processor support wimax?

    1. Doubt it, I dont think Sprints gonna be investing much more into WiMax devices…. so, hopefully it will support Sprint LTE. ;)

    2. There’s a chance it could support Wimax, Wimax and LTE, or just LTE. Sprint is trying to move to LTE, but no one knows precisely when that transition will start, so this could stick with Wimax, have a hybrid chip, or skip Wimax and be one of if not the first Sprint phones to have an LTE chip solely for the sake of battery life. We’ve seen what a hybrid CDMA/LTE chip does to battery life (Verizon’s 4G phones), I can’t imagine adding a Wimax chip to the mix would make that any better.

  5. Going to be interesting to see the changes Intel may bring upon other manufacturers

  6. There’s exciting things every year since the iPhone and Android came out.  I made the mistake of being taken aback by the Bionic at CES last year and waiting until late August when I abandoned it and decided to wait for the Galaxy Nexus which STILL isn’t out here in the States.

  7. Realistically.  If a new Sprint phone is announced early January, then when’s it going to be released?  I’d say atleast 2-3 months,

I must be crazy.  I’m still using a HTC Hero.  My contract ended in September but the Evo 3D wasn’t for me.  The GS2 was kind of old when it launched, so I was hoping for the Galaxy Nexus to come.  That didn’t (and probably won’t) happen.  I’d wait to see if the Galaxy Note has any chance on coming to Sprint, but again, I doubt it.

I must be a techno-masochist.  I should just get the Galaxy S II already and stop torturing myself waiting for the newest phone.

    1. The first step is admitting you have a problem. Now, go out at get that GS2! =)

    2. I’m in the exact same boat as you, i’m using an old blackberry cause my android broke and I’m up for a contract renewal. It’s just the SGSII has been out for 9 months or so (internationally). I want to get a phone fresh off the press.

      1. Same here. The Galaxy Nexus was a let down (for me: if (!unlimiteddata){nosdcard==fail}), so I’ve decided to just wait for either the Galaxy Note “phoneblet”, or the next SGSIII come this summer/fall.

        1. I’m not really understanding why people wouldn’t get an SGS2. The phone is freaking amazing, even if it is 9 months old. 9 months in and it’s keeping up (and often beating) the likes of iPhone 4S and Nexus Galaxy? Sounds like you have a great phone. I admit I don’t like the low PPI, but the AMOLED plus REALLY makes up for it and then some. Seriously, the GS2 is the best phone I’ve ever used. And the best thing is, it’s cheap now. Screen is huge. SD card-capable. Open boot-locker (super easy to root)  Can’t really go wrong! Give it a try!

But yeah, I’m a tech junkie and I’ll probably end up getting the GSIII, as well.. but I seriously doubt I”ll ever pawn off my GS2. Too nice.

          1. Wait! is the Boot loader on the GSII unlocked? Or are you talking about rooting….because the two ARE different

    3. 2-3 months isn’t even a guarantee. Just look at the Bionic. It debuted at CES last year and didn’t come out until the fall. Mind you, that was because of inherent design issues forcing a redesign, but it proves how long something can take. Also, keep in mind that this is a first of its kind, meaning that there may be stumbling blocks along the way. Just something to think about.

    4. Don’t worry.  I’m in the same exact position with a Hero (rooted 2.3) waiting for the next great thing.  I was going to get a used EVO 4G to tide me over but they are going for $150 while you can get a Photon for .01 cents at Amazon.  I’m in the same boat, but I’m hoping for a Motorola like the Droid Razor will come Sprint…I’ll probably wait until January and see what is announced.

  8. Me too chris;)

  9. I will take the evo evolution please

  10. About time sprint releases something good, nothing but garbage after the sg2

  11. another first for sprint?

  12. Maybe the renewed partnership is for Chromebooks?

  13. i’m waiting for the G-NEX on Sprint.  i don’t want any skins or bloatware on my device clogging it up, muddying the experience, and slowing my updates down.  Intel is a good company but they have let themselves fall behind in mobile – just like MSFT has.  they dabbled rather than focused on mobile and now others have taken the lead and it’s going to be hard for them to play catch up.  i’ll take Intel over AMD but so far i’m not that impressed with the Atom chip on my Netbook.

    1. That’s why I appreciate Intel for the 2600k i7 in my XPS, Intel really creates some amazing things that I use on a day to day basis.

  14. Samsung is getting out of the NETBOOK business, not the PC business.

  15. Samsung is all over the place, they licensed with imagination tech’s power vr, the ARM Mali, Nvidia SoCs and now Intel.. I wonder what they plan on doing for 2012 so many possibilities…

  16. … Is “moisted” a perverted joke? I know my email’s misspelled.. I chose a different name, but it was auto changed to something else by google.. I never noticed because it was on one of the first Android phones I had when I started to learn more about Android.. then I found out what it was for crome to phone, and it’s pitiful. LOL.

  17. Here is to sprint actually releasing something interesting again.
I personally don’t have my hopes up though.

  18. I KNEW I BOUGHT THE EPIC4G FULL PRICE FOR A REASON. SO I CAN GET THIS BITCH FOR 2YEARAGREEMENT PRICE. HOLLA.

  19. Bommmmm bom bom bom bom!
