Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Now Optimized For AMD APU’s

10

It was only a few weeks ago I showed you some videos of Android 3.1 Honeycomb that had been ported to PC’s and laptops running on Intel processors. Well, just like I speculated in my post — the boys over at the Android-x86 project have done it again, this time releasing Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich into the wild for PC’s. But why should Intel users get all the fun? This time around, those crafty Android-x86 devs have managed to bring AMD into the fold with Android’s hardware acceleration optimized for their low power consuming APU (CPU/GPU combo). Needless to say, AMD fanboys are more than excited at the possibilities this opens up for AMD based tablets and hardware running the Android OS.

ARM has all but monopolized the mobile space with their processors running on just about every Android device in existence, dating all the way back to the Godfather — the G1. AMD provides a great alternative to ARM with their APU’s using significantly less power than say, their rival, Intel. Ice Cream Sandwich essentially a rebirth of the Android platform and I can’t even tell you how excited I am at what the future holds for the OS. It’s a great time to be alive.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  4. I was wondering when this was going to happen since it makes much more sense than the comparable Intel offerings.  Now we need AMD powered Chrome Books as well.
