Motorola DROID RAZR is Getting Ice Cream Sandwich in Early 2012

43

Motorola has confirmed that their latest smartphone – the Motorola DROID RAZR (or just Motorola RAZR in other parts of the world) – will be getting the latest version of Android. Ice Cream Sandwich is slated to land for the device in Early 2012, though considering Motorola’s history with updates we won’t make any preconceived notions about when exactly “early 2012” is. It’s just comforting to know that it’s coming. [via Pocket-Lint]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. yeah … ok. sure moto.

    1. Name me a manufacturer that has all their device on GB. Moto is the one that can say that :)

  2. Early 2012? Just like they were going to unlock their bootloaders in late 2011?

    1. xoom 4 update. etc..etc. Moto feeling a little nervous after last night, huh.

    2. i think that was just to shut everyone up

    3. They’re lying! Don’t trust them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They’re gonna keep quiet till the very end of early 2012, then they’re gonna say, late spring. Users will eventually get the update though… just in time for [insert ‘J’ name here].

      1. Jelly Donut? The return.

  3. So Motorola, HTC, and Sony have spoken on updating their phones to ICS. Where you at Samsung? Samsung should be the FIRST to get their devices updated considering they build both of the last two Nexus’.

  4. If it came with ICS or was promised to come right after launch, my question would be answered.

    1. moto promises mean nothing anyways… Ask anyone who bought a Cliq XT with the promise of an upgrade…

  5. In “Moto Language” early 2012 is anytime before the middle of the year right? That means they might see it on devices around June 30, 2012.

  6. REALLY hoping the bionic gets it too…i dont want to regret getting this phone

    1. Sorry to say, but I think that you are gonna.. I almost got it cause my OG Droid finally broke… But I held off and bought me a Droid Incredible off craigslist to hols me over until the razr and nexus came out.. Man im glad I did..

      1. kinda hoping that this 2nd paragraph in this DL article comes true…

  7. I hate their reputation of not delivering their promises in a timely matter ……very very nice looking phone but I NEED a removable battery and a reliable company behind the product

  8. Is that picture of the back supposed to look nice? The design is awful.

    1. No, you just suck at recognizing what designs real men enjoy seeing! Toss on some burnt titanium or brushed aluminum and it becomes epic!

      1. ^ This guy knows what he is talking about. Guys love carbon fiber, billet aluminum, and all other things manly.

      2. Wow, I didn’t know design was so easy for real men. Thanks, Steven. Yeah, epic. That’s what it is.

    2. It’s called the “carbon fiber” look…..and yes…it IS manly looking. Women & wimps need not apply. Carbon fiber is extremely strong….it’s what they make the bodies of Formula 1 race cars out of.

      1. I wasn’t talking about the materials. I was talking about the design of the whole back. I’m sorry if you don’t understand the difference.

  9. Jared is 100% corrrect. in corp speak, “EARLY” is anytime before july ;)

  10. Motorola’s bootloaders were supposed to be unlockable in late 2011. I haven’t heard so much as a whisper about it other than the Atrix on AT&T a few months ago. So, the Bionic and RAZR will likely be getting updated to ICS when Jellybean(whatever the J will be) has already been out for awhile.

  11. Moto has been better about getting updates out when they say they will, so hopefully the RAZR and Bionic get ICS before May…..but as most have alluded to, we have heard this song and dance before.

  12. Any other fans of MOTO starting to get sick of the bootlader talk? I know fans of other brands are tired of the plastic phone talk.

  13. Im guessing march time frame it’ll be headlined…..then a few days after its headlined with a roll out date it gets yanked and pulled until further notice. Welcome to the world of Android!

  14. Hopefully if Google acquires Motorola they will be able to force OS updates onto the phones quickly.

I like my Atrix and was very impressed by ICS, i’d love to be able to experience it without purchasing a new phone altogether.

I was looking forward to the Nexus but was admittedly underwhelmed by it

  15. Haha, have fun waiting for that, Nexus from here out for me.

  16. Beautiful locked bootloader. I wonder how bad Blur will be on top of ICS. Removing all things beautiful about ICS.

I REALLY hope that Moto wakes up and gives people what they want. Vanilla(Chocolate) Android. Your guys OG Droid was awesome. Go back to the start moto

    1. Vanilla can be quiet boring.

  17. Forget all the dumb-ass Promises -….. This time, I’ll go with GOOGLE NEXUS.

Let’s get wet :). It’s tiime to IceCream yay!!!

  18. Okay, at this point in time with the long, long, long, and even longer delays of cell phone manufactures making “us” customer wait for receive Gingerbread OS on even the popular phones like the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, the many other Motorola phones via Verizon, and possibly still cool AT&T Samsung Infuse. They are still waiting for 2.3. Therefore, the rumor that the latest flavour of the month, “DROID Razr” is getting Android 4.0 ICS in early 2012, well… early really means before July 1st, 2012

  19. Motorola has a pretty good history on updates for high end devices. I wouldn’t be worried.

    1. We just have to look at the whole line up

    2. We are on the same boat.

  20. I like the styling, but am not a fan of the non-removable battery. I have many times used a battery pull to “hard” reset my phone. What are you supposed to do if this phone freezes and the power button doesn’t work?

    1. My xoom locked up once and I pressed power and up volume and it rebooted.

      1. Good to know, thanks Aaron.

    2. after about a year and a half, the battery on my Nexus One started to really suck. I would have been quite ticked-off had I not been able to just pop in a ($40 original) replacement for such an expensive phone

  21. Moto seems to be midspeed for updates. Samsung on the other hand, when they next year..they mean this time next year.

  22. All I can say is that I hope they don’t trying pulling the same stunt they did with moto Cliq XT, I’ll never buy another moto…

  23. Who cares. Galaxy Nexus please

  24. new social phone with software you have to see to believe is being developed by an insider as we speak…its like windows OS combined with apple tech except even better
