Hands On: New Android Market and Google Videos [Video]

51

Alright, so the new Android Market was announced by Google earlier today featuring an all new UI, widget, integration with Google Videos and multiple Gmail accounts. A few hours later, we actually got our hands on the new Market v3.0.26 (signed by Google) and I quickly uploaded it for everyone to enjoy and test out for yourselves.

Given the sketchiness of downloading apps anywhere but from the Android Market, a few of you were (understandably so) apprehensive about trying out the new Market and installing in your phone. Even more of you didn’t even have a phone equipped with Android 2.2 or higher (one of Google’s prerequisites for the app).

So, it’s for you guys that I’ve gone ahead and shot a quick (read: rough) video showing off the new Market and its Google Video rental service, simply to give you guys a better idea of what to expect in the coming weeks.

Oh- and if you change your mind about downloading the new Market, well — the link is still waiting for you. You can always go back to the old Market following this simple steps:

  • Go into your phone’s Settings
  • Select “Manage Applications”
  • Select the “All” tab at the top
  • Scroll down to Market app and select it
  • Select “Uninstall Updates”
  • Now have your old Market back!

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

    1. Hmmmm.. YouTube isn’t playing nice today. Already had to delete this video earlier today. Lets give it some time to process and hopefully it will be available shortly. *crossing fingers*

      1. I wouldn’t know I’ve never uploaded a video to Youtube haha. I did, on the other hand, get this market from the link you guys posted earlier and I must say I like it. Google is going in a good direction with android .

      2. it would be nice if you started using vimeo instead of youtube…….. firewall issues, cough

    2. Would anyone know if you can install the new market it on a tablet: Galaxy 10.1?

  2. i’m with Google all the way………… Android and Google+ ROCK!

  3. thanks Christopher for the video…….

  4. Shnazzy!!! I love it! I didn’t know people used that word anymore. I just used it on my son. (He looked at me funny.) Nice video, Chris. I’m going to flash Fab’s zip of the market, now.

  5. Really love the new market but 8 meg of internal phone space???? Don’t have that luxury unfortunately…. hopefully when the OTA drops it wont take as much!

  6. I like the layout of the new market, but it needs different colors.

I don’t like how almost everything is gray.

    1. Well… if it was black[,] people would REALLY scream WP7 =p

      1. Use a comma between black and people please.

        1. Oh, that made me laugh for two whole minutes.

          1. ME TOO! LOL!!! I didn’t even notice that! xD

          2. You seem knowledgeable about the new market….would you know if I could install it on my tablet: Galaxy 10.1?

  7. It’s always a treat to watch your videos :)

    1. Really? I always thought you never liked me, Crook…. o_O

      1. Maybe he used a little ingredient in his post called: sarcasme ;)

New market is verry nice, thanks for the link!

        1. You’re probably right. =/

          1. No sarcasm br0 :D. I’ll admit, I troll a lot but I’ve always liked you. I don’t think I’ve ever said anything that would make you think I didn’t like you..

  8. Umm… I remember back in the Android Market days, there was an issue where people couldn’t use another email with their Market. Whatever email you used to sign up or whatever, basically you had one email to choose from.

Hmm… I got the new market (I don’t kare how ghetto that sounded) and I noticed an interesting feature. It gives you the option to choose your account. Is this a new feature or is this already implemented in the previous version? Not that I need it, just fun to know.

    1. New feature. Mentioned it in the video :D

      1. Here’s a question about the multiple account deal: Does that mean that I can also put my account on my wife’s phone and install apps that I’ve paid for on her phone so we could both use them?

  9. I’m shocked no one has commented on how ugly the layout is. I just installed it. I love the new features and it runs smooth as butter, but it looks like the lovechild of the WP7 homescreen and a Sunday paper’s ad section. Between forcing public profiles and this Google has been striking out lately. I hope they turn around.

Also btw, WTF phandroid? No more guest commenting? Like I need yet another username and password. I am disappointed in you. I used to think you respected your readers. No wonder there are only 11 comments. Rant over.

    1. Hi, Torish. Chris Chavez here. I mentioned the layout in my video. I personally love the new look/layout but like your momma always told you, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Oh, and in regards to the commenting system here. Not really sure what’s going on with the guest commenting. Sounds like a problem with Disqus. Or perhaps it was an effort to rid the comments of annoying spam plaguing the site as of late. Not sure.

In any case, we meant no disrespect to you or anyone else like how who likes to “guest comment” but as you mentioned, I guess that’s why this post only has 11 comments.

      Love Always,
      Chris Chavez

      1. Thanks for the info on the commenting system. I should have known better than to doubt your guys’ integrity. Greatly appreciated.

  10. I wish I could get it to install on my Droid 2 Global with Fission. :(

  11. I like it. It is a bit of a rip off of Windows Phone 7… but what are they gonna do? Sue Android harder?? hehehehe. Seems to work great, even on my older Acer Liquid E. Smooth as butter.

  12. Why in the hell does it need to run a 30 MB sync service??????

  13. Nice features but its ugly as hell and looks to be a pain in the ass to theme..

  14. How did the HDMI out deal work for ya ?

  15. When demoing something on your phone using video, you have to be mindful of your finger motions. The rapid movements do indicate your excitement, but are pretty distracting as well. Hope to see more of your videos with more fluid movements.

    1. I’m poppin’ and lockin’! xD

  16. I’m gonna be honest… I knew of your videos prior to phandroid and I was never a fan.. in fact I found you quite annoying. I have I think turned around since. Seems as though you are making entertaining and informative videos and I’m sure I’ll be watching in the future!

Sorry for judging too early, and thanks for taking time to make these videos and all the other crap you do for the community! =)

    1. Wow, Stanley. Thanks! I really appreciate it =)

I know more than a few people in the Android community who wanted to punch me in the face but changed their mind after meeting me. I’m used to it. =p

  17. I love the new market. it looks nice and seems ashly faster than the previous market. I only wish they would have kept the new tab when going through the app lists, like the top paid and top free. But that’s a minor quibble.

  18. I was a little off about the whole Windows 7 look but once I installed it, ITS AWESOME!!!! This is a must for everyone.

  19. D you have to STREAM the movie, or can you download it to the phone for watching on a plane trip (for example)

If you have to stream over wifi or whatever, why watch it on a tiny phone

    1. Movies can downloaded for offline viewing. Pretty neat. =)

      1. You seem knowledgeable about the new market….would you know if I could install it on my tablet: Galaxy 10.1?

  20. Geesh. Firefox trying to become like IE, now Android trying to become like Windows Phone?

If I had wanted Windows Phone and it’s cluttered, jumbled interface, I would’ve bought one. While you may like your interface chaotic, many of us do not.

  21. Are the video and books features region specific? I just downloaded the market app on my uk HTC desire but its only showing apps and games no videos or books.

  22. Watching that movie would have really been nice with a kickstand

  23. I really don’t like the new market…looks too much like WP7…and on top of that, I didn’t find a way to view the “latest” apps… not the top selling ones or editor’s choices, I just want a way to see the one that were published last. pretty straightforward with the old market, anyone know how to with the new one ?

  24. Omg…..!!! ridiculous sick….!!! Love it…

  25. This version of the market refunded my money after 15 minutes as well as left the app installed on my phone.

  26. Will this work on a tablet, say my Galaxy Tab 10.1?

  27. Works great on my Rooted Droid running Android 2.3.3. I like it much better, seems to be very smooth.

  28. guuds…. ilikw it…
