1.8GHz Dual-Core OMAP4470 by Texas Instruments Sounds Amazing

Texas Instruments just upgraded their OMAP4 line with the 4470, a 1.8GHz dual-core chipset with a PowerVR SGX544 that’s said to be 2.5x faster than its predecessor. It can handle resolutions up to 2084×1536, stereoscopic 3D in HD over HDMI and more. TI’s OMAP4430 already looked amazing when we got our eyes on it at Mobile World Congress so we’re surprised to see them 1up it so quickly.

It’s shipping out to OEMs in the second half of this year, but devices aren’t expected to use the powerhouse chipset until mid-2012. We expect Motorola to revisit TI for their high-end chipset needs as NenaMark benchmark results have already suggested.

      we are android and have worked out how to use the browser on our phones and tablets unlike other fruit users I suspect who do nothing without an App from an App Store…

  3. Sounds nice. Problem is we are now in the processor wars all over again. Honestly, like most people…unless you require super fast computing power, upgrading every few years (the cpu that is) is more than enough

    1. Yeah, that’s a legitimate point, but I don’t think it applies to everyone.  I’m guessing you have a traditional laptop or desktop, right?  I do too – I’m writing this on a laptop.  If you like having a PC for doing the heavy lifting, and see your Android smartphone as a mobile companion for communication, light web browsing, multimedia, simple but useful apps, etc, then a nice 1GHz SoC is pretty much ideal.

      However, like you pointed out (“…unless you require super fast computing power,…”) I don’t think what you wrote applies to geeks like me who are super excited about seeing the “post-pc era” fully realized and have tablets/phones/”tabFone” (please, asus… change that name!) as a sincerely viable option for computing.  

      I don’t want (and can not afford) a tablet and a laptop, I just want a tablet… but if I want to do photoshop, or video editing, etc, right now my choices are PC or PC.  Smartphones, tablets, and netbooks aren’t up to snuff.*  I bought the wifi zoom, hoping that maybe the first generation of cortex A9 dual-cores, and Honeycomb, would be the dream, and I would sell my laptop and go fully post-pc… but after putting the zoom through the paces for a few weeks, I ended up returning it… there’s just no way it can replace my laptop just yet.  But maybe this new OMAP 4470 and the upcoming OMAP 5 series, and/or various cortex A-15 SoCs, will have what it takes (if they don’t, I bet they will by generation after them!)

      Are you still reading?  If you csn answer “yes,” then props to you! :-) So, YES, for most people it’s more than necessary. But for those eager to leave their PC, we really do need this power! 

      *of course, desktops will stay ahead of mobile devices (at least for the foreseeable future), but I’d like to see tablets at least considered to sit among the mid-to-low end laptops in terms of computing power and capabilities.

Agreed, in optimized software a 1ghz single core is more than ample, the droid charge proves that, it is single core, has a great screen, and can pump out a whopping 55+ FPS in any benchmarking test. I know quadrant shows it slower but In real world it’s just fine. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about better hardware, but I thing google and OEM’s should take a year off of putting the hardware on steroids and optimize the software to a T. Perhaps the OEMS should consult XDA. The seem to know exactly WTF they need to do, and the sad thing is, it’s just a hobby for most. They can also pump out entire OS upgrades in a week if not less. And not for one droid, or EVO, but for all droids or EVOs. Anywhoo, the best TI OMAP to come out IMHO so far has been the one in OG Droid. That beast could easily double it’s processing speed and do it stable. I still thing people need to follow in Sammys footsteps. They made have a CPU with the same clock speed as others, but they NEVER skimp on GPU.

    1. Luckily it’s neither Google nor the OEM’s, who keep making faster processors. They just get to buy them and put them in new devices while still focusing on developing the software.

  5. At this rate the Nexus 4 will have a octo-core processor. I hope that manufacturers don’t release phones will quad-core processors if Android doesn’t fully support them at that moment.

  8. how ’bout these companies put a pause on chipsets and start concentrating on batteries? 

    1. Hmmm putting it on pause? no ty, putting it on a lower priority, to focus on better battery life? Yes please

    2. When these companies come out with new processors, they usually come with improvements in power consumption. Battery manufacturers are also working on cramming more power in smaller spaces.. however as these improvements happen, handset manufacturers and software developers find more ways to add features and functions that will use power.. I don’t see anybody just stopping, as that would be suicide.. look at what everyone thought of HTC and Samsung at the beginning of this year when they continued providing new phones with single cores. Still good phones, but everyone waiting for the duals. Technology will continue to march forward, and it’s all good.. mobile phones and tablets have replaced the excitement that people used to have for their PC.

      1. Battery technology has moved at a snails pace and it’s pathetic.  I think there must be some back room shenanigans going on because the sluggish improvement is unacceptable for our modern day standards.

  9. Yeah the pop up in the Android 2.1 internet browser is the most annoying popup in a long while. There is simply no way to close it. Everytime I move to clickt the X on the top right it does nothing to close the popup but the popup moves to recenter and so the cycle endlessly repeats. I totally stopped viewing phandroid on my 2.1 Eris because of this annoyance.

  10. This will come to market at least 6 months after Tegra 3 is out and it will only have a bit over half its performance?
