Android To Dominate Google IO: Google TV, Chrome Fans Cry

119

With only 1.5 months left until Google IO I’ve curiously been gathering my thoughts and predictions about what Google will announce. But articles on ChromeSpot and GTVsource suggest the writing may already be on the wall: out of 52 listed session titles, 15 contain “Android”, 2 contain “Chrome” and only 1 contains “Google TV”.

Some might find this incredibly surprising, especially considering Chrome OS and Google TV are considered two hot up-and-coming products. While Chrome Browser has enjoyed growth and success, we’re also eagerly anticipating the first publicly available Chrome Netbooks. The CR-48 Chrome Notebook is out there but only as a beta to a select test group. Meanwhile Google TV is in the marketplace and I’ve maintained it will take off once it gets a little Android Market loving.

The sessions are the sessions, there is no denying that, but Google will almost CERTAINLY have a few tricks up their sleeves come May 10th and 11th. We’ve already got word of one of those potential surprises courtesy of GTVsource and – unless we receive the red light – we’ll be sharing it with you tomorrow.

Until then… let’s hear some of your Google IO predictions for Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, Google TV and anything else you have a hunch about such as the long-rumored Google Music service. And fret not GTV and Chrome Fans… great things await you.

Please give us good stuff, like the next iteration of Android. Some super-shiny test EVO 3D’s to give to devs and the press would be nice, too.

  5. What does everyone think the freebies are going to be? Do you think there will be a freebie this year? Why or why not? I want to know what the surprise is! Keep in mind that on April 5th last year Google sent an email to all persons with an I/O ticket informing them that they would receive a free phone in the mail. I can’t wait until Tuesday! (Yes, I’m excited because I have a ticket.)

P.S. It would be awesome if you did some more pre-Google I/O coverage!

  9. Apps matter. Chrome and google tv won’t take off until they have apps.

    1. Chrome already has an App Store. The Chrome Web Store for Apps, Extensions and Themes:
      https://chrome.google.com/webstore

It’s just gotten zero love/attention. Maybe once Chrome Notebooks come out it will provide some more usefulness/exposure.

  17. considering chrome is already the best browser i think this move is smart. android can always get better, but until some else besides Opera challenges chrome int he browser battle they really don’t have to do anything. and once the android market works for google tv (or maybe it already does?) it won’t need a lot of work very soon

  21. Uh? Truck google music until there is a way better music player. Any suggestions, because the stock Google Player on Vanilla Android sux!! I mean, when I try to move a song’s position in a playlist, it shows me moving that song, but when it actually places, another song is move, and it doesn’t even move into the right place. -_-

And suggestions? Until then, I could care less about Google Music. I will say this proudly. I am using my iPod for media. But I want that Galaxy Player, so come on Google, unless there is another alternative? :)

    1. That’s why Google needs to release Google music. I’ll agree the stock vanilla music player available is one of the most dull and boring experiences I’ve ever encountered, but have you seen the supposed honeycomb music player for phones? I use it right now and it’s absolutely ridiculous. IMO it’s the most visually stunning music player android has had to date.

So once they release their streaming service (assuming with the app, downloadable from the android market) they’ll be right up there with apple in the music player section.

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.’
Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?”

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He is also known as ‘Google.’

He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

  33. If the comments from Amazon’s spokesperson, the WSJ, and CNET are any indication then Google Music will definitely be announced in some fashion at the I/O. There’s bound to be a couple panels about “fragments” development for Honeycomb/Gingerbread(/IceCream Sandwhich?) apps.

Let’s see… Google +1 will be discussed, possibly along side the failure of Wave and Buzz. Most likely a nice chat about IceCream bridging the gap between Honeycomb and Gingerbread and/or development of a streamlined OS that has a particular identity depending on the device running it. And probably some new tablet news.

That’s not everything, but it isn’t like this is rocket science. Google doesn’t do that super secret stupid shit like Apple. While they may not give everything away, they do give out quite a bit of information. Which, you know, them being a search engine first, kind of makes a lot of sense.

    1. I surely hope they dont have a couple of panels on fragments. There needs to be more talk on renderscript as they pretty much have skipped over the meat of it in their blog, docs and demos.

  36. Overall Google may say they care about Android, but it has core issues from many sides that should have been addressed long ago. For end users, bring solid core applications a consistent user experience and at the very least feature parody with competing platforms. For developers, an SDK with fully implemented features that just work. I cannot count the time their docs say something *should* or *might* work to find out it doesn’t at all.

Its time for them to get serious. They’ve proved they have something good, hopefully users and developers are smart enough to move on if the platform doesn’t mature.

    1. You still really think that 2.4 will be Ice Cream, why would they mess up 2 1/2 years of releases that follow alphabetical and numerical order. Also they pretty much let it be know that until Ice Cream comes out that they aren’t going to release the source for Honeycomb because of fear for further fragmentation.

  44. I wouldn’t really say that there isn’t much on Chrome in the current sessions. Sure only a few list Chrome in the title. However, there are 8 sessions revolving around web technologies. As for Google TV, since it’s running on a version of Android the android sessions would just benefit the early stages of Google TV apps. Android might be the star of the show but there is plenty to go around.

  64. While they may be focusing on Android, Google TV is still based off of the Android platform so it may benefit from whatever is going on. And I’m sure they’ll finally announce the Android Market to the platform, which will be awesome. As an owner of the Logitech Revue (only paid $179 for it from DISH, awesome!) I gotta say I love the platform. And, as a DISH Network customer/employee I’m able to take advantage of the advanced integration with my receiver and seamlessly browse my channels and the net. It’s pretty much awesome, lol. This truly is the future of TV, so I’m excited to learn what new changes will be made to the platform.
