NOOKcolor Getting Froyo, App Store and Flash Player in April

33

HSN’s site has revealed new details about the NOOKcolor’s April upgrade. According to them, NOOKcolor owners will be able to buy applications from the NOOK Store including Angry Birds and Drawing Pad. We’re not sure about the full details of the store, but I’m sure that information will make its way to the surface before too long.

Also in this app store may be Adobe’s Flash player. It’s not a huge deal for some of you, but it just reaffirms B&N’s commitment to making this more of a tablet and entertainment device than just a color eReader. Of course, with Flash player must come Froyo so you can expect that as well. (Though we’re sure ALL of Froyo’s features won’t make an appearance in this update.)

It’s said that HSN will be showing these new features off this Saturday on their channel, though I’m not sure I can stomach actually watching HSN to catch it. I’ll damn sure try, though. [via CNET]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. sorry, my rooted Nook has had this forever! :-)

    1. you have flash as well? how? I’m rooted but no flash.

      1. Do you have a 2.2 rom installed? That is the only way (or a 3.0 rom)

        1. you know, I wish I knew; I used autonooter, and just followed the directions. I had the most recent update 1.1 and used the autonooter for that.

          1. Then no, you don’t have a custom rom installed. You are just rooted with stock 2.1 rom, same as me. Read around in here for anything you might want to know about available roms: http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-all-things-root/

          2. oh thanks; but if it’s not like the autonooter I think i’ll pass; i was confident doing it that way – but not so sure with the real techie way. :/

          3. Its cool, i haven’t messed with any roms either (on nook). Just rooted with autonooter method (from nookdevs site) was super easy. Of course running a rom from sd card is pretty easy as well i hear

          4. Cyanogen has nightlies out for the Nook Color. They’re gingerbread-based and work exceptionally well.

        2. i’m on Phiremod with 2.3. honestly, i don’t really use many sites that require Flash – the Youtube is working but it’s choppy as hell, i will admit that.

    2. What’s the best rom to put on? I’m rooted but only with autonooter. Also, does it wipe all your data?

      1. I wouldn’t bother with a ROM at this point since the new version is coming out soon unless you need/want/prefer the unstable 3.0 or a vanilla CM7.

      2. i’m using the Phiremod rom, and i LOVE it. i really just use my phone (HTC Evo) for calling and texting at this point . . .

  2. this is awesome! will have a good kernel for the froyo build out there :)

  3. Awesome news!! Anything that makes the Nookcolor even more usable is GREAT!!

  4. It remains to be seen if B&N can take this reader and market it as a full fledged tablet. This is a step in the right direction but I’ll have to see it WITH froyo first.

  5. Making the best bargain in tablets even better. If they put in a tegra chip and sell it for the same $250 price, I am there.

  6. Awesome news! I might try rooted stock on my NC for a while again when this comes out. Plus I’m sure there will be lot’s of nice tidbits in the update that the devs can use to make their custom roms better :)

That said, hasn’t there been rumors of a Froyo update for the NC for months now? Strange that this is coming from HSN and not BN…

  7. Well sounds good for my Nook Color… I like stock rooted so the update should be decent for those who like stock.

  8. If only Borders released something like this. Then this bankruptcy thing wouldn’t be happening. Nobody wants e-readers, PEOPLE WANT TABLETS.

    1. You say that, but the demand for true eInk eReaders is very high too; they have a number of advantages that LCD screens just can’t compete with. The Kindle, for example, is continually one of the highest selling items on Amazon.

  9. This is cool – sometimes I think they need to make some hardware upgrades – CPU, memory, camera, GPS… but I think with adding their app store and Flash support, they’re keeping it in the ‘reader’ category and keeping the price low, while giving customers a couple more features and increasing revenue possibilities. Good play.

  10. At this point I’d have to fight the wife for it to do any more ROM testing. She is using it JUST to read books for some reason.

  11. If this is real, It’s hella sweet. Mine is auto nootered but I left my girlfriend’s stock in hopes of this very thing. By the sounds of it though it will be B&N’s own app store. Hopefully there will be a lot a variety on there.

  12. Good show – been waiting for this for a while. I rooted my Nook with autonooter once before but didn’t like the functionality of it with the softkeys, so I restored it and have just been reading books. Really looking forward to this update.

  13. I really wish this was easily available in the UK. Having an eReader and a decent android tablet all in one package, at a reasonable price, seems like a pretty good deal.

  14. Agreed about the e ink. But if your reading at the beach you should be wearing a wide brimmed hat. A company called pixel qi has a hybrid color e ink screen, but it doesn’t seem to be widely used. A for froyo there’s always nookie.

  15. what about my damn phone? Why does a NOOK get Froyo and I’m stuck with 2.1? I would root my phone, but I’m not tech savvy and will probably brick my phone.

    1. you dont need to be tech savvy just read and be prepared follow every guide exactly as it says and everything will be fine oh and i almost forgot backup

  16. In our household, we have both the Kindle and Nook color. The reason was simple. If you’re just reading books, the e-ink screen is the best! The reason for the Nook color was because of the kids. Kids like color and the Nook has a nice feature where it can read for the kids….
