T-Mobile 3G Handsets to Be Rendered Obsolete by AT&T Merger

123

In case you have been resting under a rock somewhere, AT&T is in the process of buying out T-Mobile and merging the two companies into a singular (no, not Cingular) wireless conglomerate. As part of the deal, AT&T plans to re-purpose all of TMo’s 3G towers for the roll out of their LTE network, which should cover 95 percent of the country within two year’s time. The catch? Your 3G T-Mobile handset will be obsolete when that time comes, as confirmed by AT&T.

Seeing as how far off the problem is there is no news to share as to whether AT&T plans to compensate TMo subscribers locking into new two-year deals, but if you are a fan of magenta it may be wise to consider shorter-term contract options if you plan on picking up a new handset anytime soon.

  1. you mean att is gonna suck even more? didnt think that was possible.

  2. so you mean that the rumor of a sprint Tmobile merger werent true. damn i wanted to see how that would have played out. oh well looks like att will lose more customers.

  3. 1 day in and AT&T is already failing.

  4. I feel bad for T-Mobile users. That sucks, but I’m guessing everyone’s contract will be up by then. Still, having a perfectly good 3g phone rendered obsolete. Not fun.

  5. Ridiculous… so I would bet the 4G phones would be in the same boat since the radios differ slightly from AT&T

  6. DAMN YOU AT&T! AND TMOBILE!
thanks for ruining a great company.

  7. Sigh,

I went with T-mobile because i wanted the Nexus1 and i’ll probably get the latest Developer phone when it’s time to upgrade. I wonder if ATT will have one in two years.

  8. It forces people to buy a new phone. What a scam. AT&T blows.

  9. Wow! This is really messed up. I bet tmobile will still be selling their 3g phones over the next year. If I was a tmobile customer, I would be furious.

  10. The “4G” that AT&T and T-Mobile tout presently are still based on 3G technologies, so, to answer lancaster 09, no.

LTE is very different than HSPA/HSPA+ and HSUPA, so the HSPA equipment T-Mobile has been pushing out will probably not be usable, and will be replaced with LTE gear at T-Mobile towers.

  11. Looks like the Sprint Epic from Samsung will be my next phone. Be nice if they would let people out of their contracts without penalty but I’m not holding my breath for a break from AT&T. I was really happy with my G2, best phone I’ve ever purchased. Now I’m back in the game for looking for a long term replacement. If the EVO had a keyboard, it would be heaven, so the Epic will have to do. Any rumors of Sprint getting a new keyboard phone this summer?

  12. Pretty much SOP for buying a carrier with different technology. Would be pretty stupid for AT&T to maintain incompatible networks moving forward. Typically, however, the transition is handled well in that they stop selling devices of the old tech, then once all contracts for the old tech are expired they retire it. Also, the acquisition isn’t going to be complete for at least a year, so there shouldn’t be any forced obsolescence before then.

  13. @Dade I believe there was a version of the nexus one for AT&T. I’d be willing to bet that the next dev phones will be for AT&T especially since GSM phones can be used worldwide.

  14. I hope they won’t kill UMA, it is the only reason why I am not leaving TMo

  15. Heh, it just occurred to me that the non-HSPA+ vibrant already supports 1900 MHz UMTS, so people with that phone will be unaffected.

  16. So what about my 4G phone???

  17. I bet the FCC denies the acquisition citing a GSM monopoly.

  18. Ok, well, that does it for me…. but will going to Sprint be the better option ? Well, at least I have time to think about what I want to do….

  19. Ok this article is a bunch of incorrect information. One ATT is going.to use the current bandwidth of aws with its 700 for LTE two the 850 and 1900 which ATT and tmobile use will be the new 3G for tmobile customers so no the phones won’t be obsolete. Do some research before posting

  20. I imagine AT&T will cut some sort of deal with T-Mobile customers, exchanging AT&T phones for signing new contracts (likely with their rates). This however still leaves us EvenMorePlus customers out in the cold. I just paid $450 for a MyTouch 4G that I can’t use past next year.

  21. Good thing I didn’t upgrade on AT&T. Hoping for a phone which has dual-band LTE (700/1700) and tri-band HSPA+ (850/1900/2100). Now the question is, when.

  22. Wow At&t just did you T-mobile users that just bought a shiny new phone like the Galaxy S 4g obsolete lol. Maybe they’ll offer free upgrades. you never know.

  23. When you say that my 3g phones(HTC HD7 & the mytouch 4g) with t-mobile are going to be rendered obsolete, that just
means the 3d aspects. I would more then likely still be able to use it on edge? Or it won’t work at all?

  24. I just bought a “Nexus S” from Best Buy for $529.00 and am on a T-Mobile “Even More Plus” plan. I’m still within my 30 day return period with BB, but only for 9 more days. Any ideas about what I should do?

    Thanks,

    DH
    Virginia

  25. They should work on EDGE since most phones on the market are quad-band for GSM/EDGE.

  26. andreacristiano,

Tmo comfirmed the 3G devices would be obsolete, so perhaps you should vent your assertion to Tmo.

  27. Bye bye Nexus…what a shame.

  28. LMAO. It’s a damn phone. If it goes through, it’s probably 9-12 months away before the merger would actually happen. Instead, of moaning and groaning, without actually knowing details or seeing if there’s an improvement in your service, just go ahead and switch carriers now.

I’m amazed at how upset people get over trivially things like this.

  29. So basically, we’re going to see the end of the stock Android experience. Maybe that Sprint Nexus S that’s been rumored will have free tethering like my Nexus One.

  30. Looks like its time to use up all my upgrades, sell them off and switch to Verizon

  31. @JAYLANPHNX i feel ur pain, i jus got mine last week as well with all the accesories.. total was 650.. bye bye good old hard-worked-for money..

im going to Sprint at the end of the yr, or sooner as i may try 2 return it all for being such d-bags.

  32. come to Verizon :)

  33. I hate at&t! I will never go back to them. Verizon, here I come. Lesser of evils!

  34. Urrum,

LTE will NOT be rolled out and completed in 2 years. Please stop drinking the Telco koolaid and listen to independed sources of info.

LTE will be rolled out over 3-5years and I would argue even that is optimistic! This isn’t some minor upgrade and the costs are enormous!
    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-21/at-t-may-be-haunted-by-iphone-network-load-in-t-mobile-merger.html

  35. I’ll compensate them by leaving.

  36. TmoNews TmoNews
Customers on AWS T-Mobile handsets will be migrated to newer handsets on ATT 850/1900 bands to free up AWS for LTE

Here is proof from the call this morning. ATT will replace tmobile handsets for it’s subscribers.

  37. @Steven Skwarkowski: You’ll have to sign new contracts to use your upgrades. If you then switch to Verizon you’ll have to pay early termination fees. It probably won’t be worth it.

  38. Fred, this is a fan site, why are you surprised people are getting upset over something they have an interest in? People get upset when their sports teams lose too.

  39. So who is left for unlimited data plans?

  40. Google should buy Tmo. Done.

  41. @Justin

I’ve been through that process with AT&T before when they shut off their 2G network in my area. They let people with 2G phones trade them in for “comparable” 3G phones. The problem: by “comparable” they meant feature and messaging phones, so anyone with a Smartphone got screwed.

  42. I don’t know why everybody wants to go and run off to sprint. Sprint will soon suffer the same fate as T-mobile. The only chance that sprint or tmobile had for survival against the big 2 was some type of merger. Sprint will not be able to hang on as the number 3 and will probably be swallowed up by verizon or some crap like that.

  43. SAD SAD SAD SHITTT T-DUMB ASS

  44. Wtf??? Im happy with my t mobile my touch slide…that means i will have to get a new phone? F you att, well verizon here i come…..

  45. Goodbye T-mobile and hello Sprint!!!

  46. @ brie, google is puuting their energy into sprint now. Sprint is getting the nexus s, and sprint will be the first company to have google voice built into their network.

  47. Decisions, decisions…

    Sprint Nexus S 4G
    Verizon HTC THunderbolt 4G
    Verizon Samsung Stealth 4G
    T-Mobile/AT&T ummmm…HTC Pyramid?

  48. I don’t think Sprint will be the victim of a Verizon merger just because of the CDMA technology. Sprint is very competative right now and their releases of new Android phones will definately give them more choices for consumers. Perhaps the dev phones will find a new home with Sprint. The Nexus S is coming here and that’s certainly a move in the right direction.

Sadly, the loss of TMobile is going to hurt the industry. They were able to bring to us a huge variety of quality phones from all sorts of companies. Now, being absorbed by larger company, that flexability is gone.

  49. I have not always been a fan of TMO, though I have been a subscriber going back to the Voice Stream days. But with my Vibrant and my wife’s MT4G, I really love TMO. My wife switched from iphone/ATT, and we have been so happy with the change. This sucks. I cannot imagine ATT unlocking a phone, and opening it up for no data plan, like TMO did on my son’s phone.

I might look to USCellular. they have great coverage in my area, have great rate plans, improved phones, and unlimited incoming minutes. I cannot imagine staying with ATT.

  50. I’m still hoping this deal is stopped by an antitrust ruling, I will not go over to AT&T. These could be the beginnings of dark times for mobile subscribers…

  51. I am a TMO customer and I am very sad and angry. I hate ATT those suckers. I pretty sure I will switch either to Verizon or Sprint. Bad news!!!

  52. This is great news for Verizon now two screwed up company’s will become one big one leaving Verizon to pick up the millions of customers that defect!

  53. Eff you (AT&T and T-Mobile)! Now my T-Mo days are numbered. I will soon be signing up with Sprint for a Nexus S 4G (and inevitably Cyanogen MOD). My current Cyanogen-baked Nexus S will remain my “international phone” when I travel overseas and faced with plugging in GSM SIMM chips.

  54. I might have to sign up with metro pcs now. The have great coverage in the metro Detroit area.

  55. Thanks Tmobile. Good job abandoning your customers.

  56. So does this mean…. we can’t be Grandfathered in?

  57. Well time to go back to Sprint for me. There’s no way in hell I am going back to At&t. I hope the FCC doesn’t approve this merger. Otherwise it will be less choice for the consumers and higher prices. It’s pretty obvious that they are gonna finance this merger by raising the costs of the calling plans and limiting the data plans to the point they are no longer affordable. If this happens it’s gonna be a mega monopoly and Sprint’s fate will be the same with Verizon purchasing it too.

  58. So who is left that will give me a discount for BYOD?

The FTC should kill this deal.

  59. men this sucks i guess im between veryzon and sprint or metro pcs f$$$$ att an F$$$$ t mobil for this

  60. I wanna die right now… being a T-mobile user for 3 years and now this? I dont know what to do… Sprint with the Evo…. Verizon with the Thunderbolt and At&T with the HTC Pyramid…. Sprint here I come!

  61. If FCC cares about the consumers they will never approve the deal. Write to your house reps and FCC – grass-root campaign never fails. Will be the worst deal ever for a t-mobile consumer.

  62. yea this sucks… looks like the only way ATT can GET customers is to buy them lol, even then they will still leave :P

  63. LOL at people thinking that a technology=market. FCC will _not_ block a merger because of a technology monopoly (ala GSM). That’s not a market space, nor should it be (Think what that would mean for copyright laws).

The real question is at what point will the government step back in? I’d rather not wait until _after_ VT&T gets born and the competition is already dead for them to decide to split things up and the public has to suffer with garbage a or garbage b.

Wireless coverage is not something a startup can spring into over night.

  64. If Sprint plays its cards right (gets a good phone selection and keeps the plans the same) they could gain a big chunk of new customers. I switched from tmobile last year and I’m super happy with the switch.

  65. What the Fxxx?!?!? I just got a Galaxy Tab (which is 3G) xmas-eve.

If ATT drops support for 3G, my tab will be rendered useless!! Will I be able to terminate my contract **WITHOUT** ETF penalty because they are reneg’ing on their obligation (i.e., to provide service throughout my contracted period)?

I really hope that merger fails!! I really like T-Mobile for their forward-looking acceptince of Android. I can’t stand ATT due to past experiences, but that’s another long story. And I’m not even touching on ATT’s gimpping of their first Android handsets!!

If the merger does go thru, I hope I have an option of ….

    A) Get a Galaxy Tab 4G (pending if/when) as a replacment, at no cost to me,

    B) Terminate the contract with no ETF penalty,

    C) Start a class-action lawsuit (and I’m not kidding!!). This would naturally include others that just bought 3G phones and are locked into a contract for non-existing (an abandon 3G) service.

  66. With all the people leaving AT&T-Mobile (Not including me), who knows, AT&T-mobile customers might ACTUALLY be able to get faster speeds.

  67. I hope the deal won’t succeed …. If it succeeds, AT&T should let T-Mobile customers free of T-Mobile Contract.

  68. Will my galaxy tab be obsolete now?

  69. Update from Gizmodo:
“Will T-Mo 3G handsets work after the transaction?
Yes, T-Mobile handsets will continue to work for both 2G and 3G service. Over time, we plan to upgrade T-Mobile’s 3G customers on the company’s AWS spectrum to our 850 and 1900 MHz spectrum. But this will be done through the normal handset up grade process – and it will be done gradually over several years after the merger closes.”

  70. I’m seeing an awful lot of comments about T-Mobile fans moving to Verizon before this happens. Should be interesting to see how much of T-Mobile’s current user base defects to Verizon/Sprint/others before the merger is complete. Of course, that’s assuming this even gets through regulatory approval, which I have reservations about.

  71. Sprint will be fine on their own, I don’t understand why everyone seems to think Verizon will buy them.

  72. What a scam! That means 18 months (12 months to complete the merger, 6 months to roll out the changes) your handset won’t be cutting edge any more.

All sarcasm aside, that does suck for the T-Mobile faithful that waited forever for decent network speeds to get the rug yanked out from under them.

    David

  73. “I’m amazed at how upset people get over trivially things like this.”——————–

you must be one of the customers of verizon and ATT that are overpaying for your calling plans. i guess no one would expect you to understand how bullshit this is.

  74. lmao at everyone trippin balls about this, dont act like you are actually going to keep the phone for anything beyond another 2 years unless you got it recently

  75. Juneau, Alaska will more than likely not be included in that 95%…

  76. sprint will survive since all t-mobile costumers will start run to sprint att will just be buying out a company that has no subscribers lol

  77. I think ATT’s plan actually makes a lot of sense. It’s the same one I would make, although as a Tmo customer I know I’m going to get raw end of the deal. First it’s a better use of spectrum, so they can have their “4G” and hopefully deploy LTE more smoothly. Second, and IMO the most important, by rendering 3G useless on Tmo handsets it forces anyone with a unlimited data plan to upgrade and guess what? ATT only has a 2 GB/month plan that costs $5/mo more than my unlimited data plan! I routinely use more than 2 GB/month. It’s great for ATT’s bottom line, terrible for mine. That’s why it’s time to look for alternatives.

I don’t really talk on the phone much anymore, maybe it’s time to drop voice and just get a data plan and try to use Google Voice.

  78. That really, really, suck. I guess im switching to ckriket or boost mobile i hate i phone anyways.

  79. still cant believe this bs!

  80. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure T-Mobile uses non-standard frequency bands which no one else in the world uses, so I would think nearly all T-mobile phones (except for ones that also support standard frequencies) will eventually become obsolete if these frequencies are phased out by AT&T.

It will be sad to see T-Mobile go though, if this deal goes through. I would personally never go with them because of the non-standard frequencies, but I most likely wouldn’t have my current Android phone on AT&T if it weren’t for T-Mobile releasing the G1.

  81. I mean this really is not fair. I have a Nexus S with T-Mobile and what’s going to happen? This. I don’t know what to do now. Sigh.

  82. ATT is evil. I think we should attack em like Afghanistan and JDAM bomb em. Snipers for Stephenson, the betrayer.

  83. I’m glad to be on the Even More Plus plan with no contract. I got that plan right when the Nexus One came out. If my N1 eventually stops working in a year or so and if AT&T doesn’t have a Google phone to replace it, I’ll head to Sprint.

@dhend25 Sprint is getting the Nexus S this Spring (Spring just started) so you could return it and try Sprint if you like them. Best Buy will be selling it but so will Sprint. You can even get it for $199 on contract, which isn’t offered by T-Mobile.

  84. Well, I’ve been happy using my N900 on T-Mobile 3G, and I had planned to use it until someone released a better tablet, but chances are that AT&T will kill my 3G, and my $40 voice / unlimited data plan, before anyone bothers releasing one.

And then I’m sure that to get a new SIM for a new device (Almost guaranteed in order to use the network after they shut off the 3G,) I’ll be required to give up my sweet T-Mobile plan and go with AT&T’s absurd data rates.

At some point I think I’ll be priced out of the Internet, given the back slide in features / price on wired and wireless network access lately.

  85. EVERYONE NEEDS TO WRITE THE FCC AND ASK THEM TO PUT A STOP TO THIS!!!

  86. It looks like the OLDER 3g phone will be useless. the newer 3g/4g phones should be fine. The LTE phone will be out is 1/2 – 2 years (( in OKlahoma)) so I will befine with my atrix. Contract will be up about the time the LTE phones get here.

  87. Good. Good. Let the butthurt flow through you, Tmobile fans.

  88. for around here t-mobile has been going down for awhile now. I had them from 04 to end if 09. As tech advanced the call quality decreased. Sprint is barly hanging on here. As for Verizon, if it was not for them taking over Altell then would not be here. UScellar was better then altell, which in turn means they are currently better then Verizon.

  89. Pretty simple people. If you want to stick it to at&t . Then move to either verizon or sprint. Show at@t that their move to acquire t mo was a mistake. Dont let at& become a monopaly…….

  90. When this happens I’m sure most phones will be able to access the LTE network because I don’t see this happening for another 1.5 – 2 years.

  91. I love the fact that people hate on Tmobile and now saying its going to ruin at&t stop crying about everything and if you have sprint or verizon this dont effect you so gtfo here Dont bother replying to me cause i wont see it or waste my time writing back =]

  92. I love Tmobile !!!But When my contract is up i may go to Sprint if this deal turns out suckish.

  93. Sure would be nice if Google got in the game with Sprint. Otherwise if ATT pulls this off, Verizon will be right behind them getting Sprint. I’m with Verizon now and only because off in my area, they really are the only phone that will work in all places I live ( Idaho/Oregon border)But at least Sprint in this area is catching up with coverage. Prob a wet dream, would be nice to see a “Google Wireless” But as it is, might as well stay Verizon, no use going to Sprint now.

  94. Bye Bye Tmobile/ATT. Today I sent back my new phone, canceled the 2year deal, and shopped new hardware at Verizon. I despise ATT and will not support their atrocious customer service policies. RIP in Tmobo.

  95. Lets be honest with ourselves, say the merge takes place April 1st 2012, its not like they’re going to shut down the AWS on April 2nd. Probably be more then 6 months before they do anything. I can see not liking the merger or at&t, but lets not make up crap.

  96. After considering the alternatives, I am quitting America and moving to Canada. If I can’t get free tethering I will just take free healthcare instead. So long suckers!

  97. wait ill have to upgrade my phone off HSPA+ to LTE…. guess what, so will everyone else. this article is stupid.

  98. Everyone: stop bashing T-Mobile…blame Deutsche Telekom for not caring the least about their little American subsidiary while their employees here work their asses off competeing with Verizon and ATT. I joined tmobile (first provider ever) one year ago with my N1 and I feel totally abandoned. But, in one year time, my phone will be nearing the end of it’s life anyway. In a year, I am certain that I will not be with ATT…no way in hell! In the meantime, I would not buy a single Tmobile phone to upgrade.

  99. @38.Len wrote on March 21, 2011
So who is left for unlimited data plans?

    Metro PCS FTW!!!! :D

Their 4G is fast, if you are lucky enough to be in one of their coverage areas. And only $60/mo for unlimited data, voice, long distance, etc. And no taxes on top of that, either. $60, period. You just can’t beat that with a stick.

If you are in Tampa, you can get the $60/mo plan for $50/mo, now through the end of March because they turn on 4G here April 1.

And they have a couple nice Android phones now too, with more on the way.

  100. I think Sprint is still offering $125 bill credit for porting a number over and getting a smartphone.. almost pays your termination fee if you can wait for the credit. Now would be a good time to switch.

  101. Looks like ATT is finally taking steps to improve their network. Awesome for me. Sucks for TMo people though, they’ll be forced to upgrade.. but why is that such a bad thing? New phone.. better service. Everyone wins.

  102. At least both AT&T use GSM – that is logical. Imagine the problems of trying to merge totally different technologies like GSM and the old CDMA stuff. It would have been a great opportunity to allow CDMA users to transition to a better system. For example GSM has always been far more reliable and it allows the use of all sorts of apps which require transmission of both voice and data at the same time !

  103. Wow, tell me thats not the craziest thing ever.

    http://www.real-privacy.it.tc

  104. I’m extremely upset. I was waiting for a decent phone and then they announce all Tmo phones will be useless. The next day they announce the G2X. Screw you ATT, i’m switching to Verizon!!!

  105. 105 / Harry

The reliability of a given technology is in how it’s deployed, moreso than any inherent advantage. At least in this case.

The only reason GSM phones have the ability to do simultaneous voice and data is because the HSDPA protocols were written to require a separate radio. If your in an EDGE area you can’t do this.

You might find it interesting that the newer GSM air interfaces are actually CDMA based encoding, rather than the older TDMA interfaces. Simple fact of the matter is you can pack more information from more sources in with carrier division than you can with time division.

  106. This isn’t completely true, AT&T and T-Mobile share some frequencies that will make everything on the phones work except 3G data. EDGE data will still work, quit your whining.

  107. @Not Available
You should have said.. If your in an “EDGE ONLY” area.. Edge is available where most 3G is.. It’s a backup, and older feature phones that have no 3G still use it for data.. Edge is not too bad to have either. For example when I went to Prague last year, I had data access on my TMobile phone with EDGE when I wouldn’t have had any because of the different 3G frequencies that they were forced to go with here in the US.. long story short, it allowed me to use Google maps (although slow), to get “unlost” in those winding streets.

  108. I don’t think AT&T cares about the customers. They are really buying the towers because their network is crammed with IPhone users. That is why they have dropped calls and data caps in place. They are hoping to use tmo network to reduce the congestion on their network. I went through this merger mess with AT&T and Cingular. I switched to tmo because AT&T would raise my “fees” and billing every month for usage charges. I’ll be switching to Sprint or Metro PCS for sure if this goes through. I’m sure they will be happy to take in the mass exodus of customers.

  109. Yep, no way in Hades I’ll be using anything associated with att. I was around when the monopoly was broken up and now we are about to have a bigger monopoly! If Verizon buys Sprint there will only be two viable nationwide options and neither are attractive. No hope in the bought regulators to squash this deal, they haven’t with anything else that has gotten in att’s way.

  110. So wait a second … where does PRIMCO and my dual band phone fall in all of this? Can someone please tell me what the F#CK is goin’ on?

  111. AT&T-I’ve never heard positive feedback on. Verizon-I’ve had bad experiences with. Sprint-I’ve only heard complaits about it from my peers. So what’s left? I am very happy with Tmobile, the plans are affordable, customer service is great and coverage suits me perfectly. I am at a loss…which is the most comparable to Tmobile?

  112. i just spoke with the FCC. the merger has not gone through yet. there is no information on the merge has not gone before the fcc/ftc commision review board yet.
