Once Upon a Time, the HTC Thunderbolt Was For Sale on eBay (Two of Them)

21

This is becoming a theme with Verizon, it seems. Just as with the HTC Merge, someone’s listed the HTC Thunderbolt on eBay before its official launch. Two of them, in fact. (The difference between that instance and this one is that Verizon’s actually officially announced the HTC Thunderbolt.)

I regret that I didn’t see it in my inbox sooner as they have already been snatched up. (Oddly enough, the seller listed them as Buy It Now items for $545.) I call it odd because all signs are pointing to the Thunderbolt costing $750 off-contract, and they probably could have gotten more than that in an actual auction. Too late now, though. We’ll be on the lookout for more listings. [Thanks, Andulas!]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Geez, for $545 I would’ve paid that for sure. That’s not bad at all.

  2. Damn! why dont i have an E-bay account! :-/

  3. Read the listing better next time. The guy had the price for almost $900. He said shipping price would change to reflect the final price. Winning bid $500. Shipping $399. Total price $899.

  4. I didn’t see that anywhere on the listing. Could you point out exactly where it says that?

  5. Here is the listing I was watching. Down towards bottom of description said $899. Maybe, we were looking at different one. Mobile link.

  6. Quentyn, isn’t it a Actual auction, not action??

Ill still pick the Atrix over Thunderbolt.

  7. Food for thought. The one you show selling for $545 unlocked. How much will a sim card cost since this isn’t included and none of us have one already with Verizon? I am sure Verizon will not give it away.

  8. SCAM, if any one falls for that, I have a bridge for sale.

  9. Joe:

Shipping is listed as free. I understand that he mentions changing the shipping in the description, but he already listed the shipping charge as free. Once the sale is made you can’t just make up a new amount. He would have to either honor the original, listed shipping amount or be forced to cancel the sale. This guy either doesn’t understand how eBay works or he is a complete scumbag. I’m guessing a little bit of both.

  10. I’m feeling good about Thursday 3/10 for a release date. I’ve been sitting here with my $ waiting for nearly a month now. With all the displays popping up in Verizon stores + another new commercial its gotta be released soon.

  11. Who cares.

  12. fishy, much?

“IF YOU ORDER TODAY I CANNOT GET THE PHONE OUT TODAY, WE STILL HAVE TO PICK UP. BUT YOU WILL HAVE A PHONE THE RELEASE DATE ON MY END HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. I CANNOT SAY WHAT DAY BUT NOT IN MARCH”

looks like it’s not released in March, hmmm…
    and furthermore,

“WE HAD TO USE A DIFFERENT EBAY ACCOUNT SO THE LISTING IS SET AT 500.00 MAX PER MONTH THE PHONE IS 899.99 ”

really…how authentic does this actually sound?

  13. No one cares about this phone anymore! Verizon and HTC both have ads on TV for it. Verizon has big card board cut outs in their stores and it’s even in magazines advertizing it. Yet we can’t buy it! I’m going to give this phone til the end of the month then it’s wait until the bionic comes out. I have the driod incredible and HTC makes awesome phones, but WTF is it with this phone!

  14. and–how did i miss this–
    $899 for the phone?
isn’t the rumored release price about $749? what the french, toast?!

this dude is just trying to lock some poor sucker into paying him for a phone, not yet released, and for more money than it’s worth.

  15. People are stupid enough to pay that much let them that’s a rip off ill wait for launch day considering Verizon won’t activate it till launch day you pretty much over paid for nothin.

  16. HTC has fallen on hard times. Their latest phones are already antiquated before they even come to market. The Thunderbolt is such a lame phone they’re better off not even releasing it. It’s just an evo clone like every other phone they’ve released in the last year. Have they run out of ideas?

  17. $750 w/o contract? Seriously. For a phone? Somehow the Motorola Xoom now looks like a bargain.

  18. I don’t think that was real. I want this phone asap it needs to be launched ASAP

  19. Yeah I agree this phone is a joke release the bionic already…….. They need a new design team

  20. There is also some Samsung Galaxy S2’s (i9100) on for sale on ebay

  21. After reading the description, that is about as shady as it gets. ” PLEASE NOTE THE HANDLING TIME WILL BE MARKED AT 10BUSINESS DAYS. IF YOU ORDER TODAY I CANNOT GET THE PHONE OUT TODAY, WE STILL HAVE TO PICK UP.”
…so these people don’t actually have them, they just have to nip around the corner and pick them up.
BUT YOU WILL HAVE A PHONE THE RELEASE DATE ON MY END HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. I CANNOT SAY WHAT DAY BUT NOT IN MARCH.
…and now (s)he is swearing that it will take 10 days, but you’ll have it before the release date (which won’t be in March…if this guy is for real, he is better connected than anyone I know)
I WILL SEND YOU EMAIL INSTRUCTIONS WITH CC AUTHORIZATION AND WE CAN PROCESS BY PHONE OR FAX. I WILL TAKE PAYPAL, BUT I AM NOT LISTING IT.
    ….uh huh
CONTACT ME AFTER PURCHASE AND WE WILL MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. WE HAD TO USE A DIFFERENT EBAY ACCOUNT SO THE LISTING IS SET AT 500.00 MAX PER MONTH THE PHONE IS 899.99 WE JUST HAVE TO CHANGE SHIPPING VALUES AND SUCH, SORRY ITS JUST THE WAY IT IS WE HAVE TO STAY UNDER THE RADAR
oh cool! nothing shady about that at all!
Yeah….if I’m going to get ripped off, I’d rather Verizon rip me off than some shady people who “acquire” Thunderbolts (with, it appears, nothing packed with it, so as Joe #7 posted, Where are you going to get your sim-card? Don’t you think Verizon is going to wonder where in the hell you got a Thunderbolt? More food for thought: when you ask for your SIM card, they are probably going to ask for ID numbers from the phone, if those numbers happen to match some numbers on some phones that “fell off the truck”, they’ll probably be less than pleased. Red flag after red flag raised in that listing.
