More from Jha’s Investor Talk: Motorola Will Be Among First to Offer Gingerbread Upgrade, Google One of Moto’s Biggest Enterprise Customers

25

While news that the Motorola Droid Bionic and other upcoming high-end devices from the manufacturer will get the same Webtop treatment as the newly released Atrix 4G might have been the juiciest bit of information to emerge from Sanjay Jha’s talk with investors at Morgan Stanley, a few smaller noteworthy points emerged.

The first concerns the path to Gingerbread upgrades for current Motorola handsets. While exact timeframes and specific devices were not discussed, Jha said that last year was an important in helping Moto hone their efforts in getting Android updates out in a timely fashion. He noted that Motorola was among the first to release Froyo upgrades, and plans to be among the first to release Gingerbread. We haven’t seen much news on this front recently, aside from a few pics of the Droid X with Gingerbread on board.

The other point of interest concerns Motorola’s attempts to win over an enterprise audience. While talking to investors about the measures Moto is taking to aid in device security, Jha mentioned some of the larger companies that have bought into Motorola hardware for business use. One of their biggest customers for the Motorola XOOM, he said, was Google. That may or may not mean many Google employees get a free XOOM to go along with their paychecks. Jealous.

  1. Release a phone for Sprint……That would be a good start to help your market share

  2. I didn’t even realize Sprint had no Moto.

  3. Sprint/Nextel has the i1, ok not very powerful and runs on the slow Nextel network. It’s still a moto phone running Android (ok a very old version of Andorid).

  4. Okay, release a “GOOD” phone on sprint

  5. Sprint understands what they need that’s why no motorola devices exist. Sprint doesn’t want UPDATE ISSUES OR PROBLEMS.. Continue dealing with Htc, Lg, Windows, we will be fine without MOTOROLA

  6. I guess moto is talking about US phones only, again. The Milestone (international HSDPA version of the Droid) still has 2.1

  7. Moto actually has a good reputation with updates for high end phones in the US. See Droid/Droid X FroYo updates.

  8. Lmao…lg and windows phones r a joke

  9. ” One of their biggest customers for the Motorola XOOM, he said, was Google. That may or may not mean many Google employees get a free XOOM to go along with their paychecks. Jealous.”

Don’t be jealous, it’s one of the 7 deadly sins. Thank goodness the google people are going to get these, maybe they can root it and develop for it and save us the trouble of dealing with moto’s lockdown nonsense.

  10. good, now where is gingerbread for my dx?

  11. Richard, wrong again. Motorola has been great about updates. Look at the droid 1, it started with 2.0>2.01>2.1>2.2>2.2.1, that’s not to shabby, we have already seen leaked builds of gingerbread for the x. So again, you’re wrong. Sprint is missing out. The droid x is a better built phone than EVO, with better processor and GPU, I know sense is better than blur but I would quit trolling and give credit where credit is due.

  12. Ksizzle, that’s your opinion. I think the Evo is a much better built device than the Droid X.

  13. I feel they should release as beast on T-Mobile and Sprint. And it’s not right of them jus to send updates to high end phones i would say at least 1 give all phones a
Large update! Don’t just update the high end phones that’s bad business!

  14. I feel they should release a beast on T-Mobile and Sprint. And it’s not right of them jus to send updates to high end phones i would say at least give all phones 1Large update! Don’t just update the high end phones that’s bad business! And give all carriers at least one MAJOR high end phone or pull a Samsung and give high end variants of the same phones

  15. Comment 11 makes good points…I just knew I would see little Richy boy comments about his love life that is Sprint lol toooo funny too funny this guy is …Richard I now have more fun reading Phandroid cause of your love life (Sprint) comments…lol and lol again

  16. Maybe Google purchased a lot of Xooms for the Google I/O gift.

    one word…clearwire…

  18. @OtisFeelgood Sorry dude… every HTC device I pick up feels like cheap crap. My girlfriend has an HTC Incredible and the thing feels like it’s mad out of balsa wood. I can hammer nails with DX. Just sayin.

  19. Sprint likes manufacturers with no upgrade problems? Lol like the samsung epic upgrade that just got suspended because of MULTIPLE issues?

  20. @ Ksizzle9 – Moto is fine with updates— on verizon. If you had the misfortune of buying a cliq, cliq xt or charm on t-mobile then you have been abandoned. My friends overseas are a bit less than excited with moto’s upgrades as well.

Notice that they seem to be able to upgrade the OG Droid with no blur just fine. In any case, they need to either stop blurring up the phones so they can be upgraded and/or stop releasing substandard low end crap that cannot handle upgrades with blur. That would help.

  21. The Droid Bionic will NOT get webtop.

  22. its actually called morgan stanley

  23. Google should tell Motorola. Let my bootloaders go! As in unlock the bootloaders or you will be the last to get all updates from here on out!

  24. With those ears he could be a base station.

  25. “Among the first to release Froyo”… yes, to a few handsets. Then Motorola went to sleep for a few months before starting to roll out a buggy as hell Froyo to UK.
Motorola apparently is happy enough to be a regional player and be strong in the US.
