Minecraft’s Addicting Sandbox Gameplay Coming to Android Later this Year

20

You may or may not be familiar with Minecraft. It is a sandbox-style game that looks like it should exist on some early 90s DOS system rather than your modern-era PCs that is still only in its beta stages yet developing a huge cult following. The point of the game is basically to create objects and environments that can be as simple as a build or as complex as a functional computer.

While a final release hasn’t even been reached on the PC platform, Minecraft is already busy developing a mobile version of the game. They considered sending it out of house for porting, but ultimately decided to do it themselves. This port will be available for both Android and iOS later this year. When the game will shed its beta tag, however, is unknown.

  1. Please show footage of the actual BETA game instead of the free version, there is so much missing in the free version.

  2. Actually looks pretty cool… The graphics can be updated… that’s no worry..

  3. Yes! I have been waiting for this since MC came out

  4. Those graphics are HORRIBLE! :-p

  5. If it was addictive in nature, it would be addicitive, not addicting.

  6. Zack the graphics will stay blocky as is. As for the textures, there are higher resolution texture packs available.

  7. I hope they take care of those that already bought it already in beta supporting their dev and not make them pay all over again to use it on Android…

  8. Freakin sweet! My droid can probably handle it better than the laptop I’m on :P

  9. The graphics don’t need updated. For those of you who only play pretty games, there’s texture packs. For the rest of us, we recognize good style when we see it. The 8-bit and blocky look isn’t going away.

Realistic graphics aren’t the only good graphics.

  10. I LOVE the 8 bit graphics and I played minecraft a TON. I haven’t played it much lately, too much other stuff going on. But it’s a great sandbox game. Very very great.

  11. Early 90s DOS?
Are you out of your mind?
Minecraft supports a real Z axis, it has many modern engine features. Heck, maybe the art is similar but no 90s DOS game had this sophisticated of an engine. Even the venerated DOOM did not support layer over layer.

  12. Oh god see what this did, Minecraft already looks tons better then that picture. That was the FREE version people, the PAID version is MUCH BETTER.

  13. PLay Minecraft, then come back and complain about the shoddy graphics.

  14. Some devs have already played around a bit with the UI and multi touch movement controls. It’s completely unofficial but does look very promising.

I’m very excited about this news!

  15. So it supports mid 90’s DOS game technology instead then? Quake supported this in 1996.

I’m pretty sure he meant the blocky and chunky graphical styling. Either way, I find it funny that only the iOS version was announced on Engadget when there was obviously an Android version as well.

  16. I seriously fail to see the appeal of games like this. What the hell is the point?

  17. it really is difficult to explain but if you give it a chance see if its for you. ive found many friends that love it and others hate it

  18. This is by far the most addicting game ever… I started playing it to see what all the fuss was about and then I was hooked. Now all my friends play as well and they said alot of the same things people on here are saying. Check our the review on it by zero punctuation… Google it

  19. awesome. minecraft on the long rides home from work should kill the time.

  20. The game is spreading like wild fire. 2 weeks ago, I had never heard of MC. Now, half of the guys at the office play it, and 2 of us have MC servers running. Yes, you can do anything you want in the game. No, there are no goals, missions, levels or score. Yes, this seemed strange to me too. I didn’t think I’d get into it at all. But here I am. The thing is, you can do anything you want. If you want to fight monsters, you can. If you want to build a scale model of a Les Paul, you can. The point of playing a video game is to have fun, right? So… If there’s at least one thing that you can do in MC that’s fun (to you) then its worth it. And it seems that there’s lots to do.
