BREAKING: LG Optimus 3D Both Plays And Records 3D Content

32

We showed you the first live pictures of the LG Optimus 3D this morning… before the phone had even been officially announced. And guess what? Now LG has gone public with news… and some ridiculously exciting details:

Not only will the Optimus 3D play back 3D content without the need for the viewer to wear glasses for the experience, the Optimus 3D will also include a dual-lens camera for 3D RECORDING. I’m not sure how well the playback or recording will work in reality, but I’m definitely drooling in reality.

Think about it: if one of the main problems with 3D screens is lack of 3D content, LG singlehandedly solves the problem by allowing you to create your own 3D content. I can think of a million entertaining ways to use this technology and I can’t wait to see it on display at Mobile World Congress February 14th to 17th in Barcelona.

Here is the full press release:

LG TO UNVEIL WORLD’S FIRST FULL 3D SMARTPHONE AT MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2011
3D Recording-Viewing-Sharing of Life’s Precious Moments Anytime, Anywhere

SEOUL, Feb. 1, 2011 – At this year’s Mobile World Congress, LG will unveil the LG Optimus 3D, the world’s first 3D smartphone offering consumers a full 3D experience right in the palm of their hands.

The LG Optimus 3D addresses the lack of 3D content issue — one of the biggest problems facing the 3D market — with a complete platform for a one-of-a-kind experience on a mobile device. LG’s most advanced smartphone to date will feature a dual-lens camera for 3D recording, a glasses-free LCD panel for 3D viewing and diverse connectivity options such as HDMI and DLNA for 3D content sharing anytime, anywhere.

Further details and a live demo of the LG Optimus 3D will be offered at Booth #8B178 at MWC in Barcelona from February 14 to 17.

We’ll be there… stay tuned for details! In the meantime, get the convo started in our Optimus 3D Forums if you’re as excited as we are!

  1. Sounds good to hear… Lg is moving in on everyone

  2. What carrier will this be on?

  3. Think I will adopt the ‘wait and see’ on this. First it’s LG. Second is the 3D seems a bit gimmicky. Don’t get me wrong though, after 4 or 5 reputable websites’ reviews come launch in July, I may be on board.

  4. can you record / see 3D in both landscape and portrait? or are you limited to using the phone in one orientation?

  5. @aw123

I’m sure it wouldn’t matter because you have to think about it being able to show on other devices you share it with like their 3D display tvs. Recording it in portrait might give you a side looking video so I doubt it wouldn’t matter.

  6. I’m wondering exactly what #5. aw123 is. If the two cameras are set a certain way, then wouldn’t they only be able to do 3D in a certain orientation. And I’m guessing there’s no 3D for the front facing camera. I wonder how Sharp was able to work all of this out.

  8. Do you guys think its worth it to get the Optimus 2X knowing this is right around the corner? I really want the 2x but with this new tech im not sure, Opinions? Im up for an upgrade now and i delayed getting a g2 for a ffa, then i delayed getting a mytouch 4g for a dual core and im not sure if i should delay for a 3D display and camera

  9. Um. Well, this is either one of the greatest things invented as a smartphone, or this is going to be one of the biggest fails ever. I’m hoping its great and amazing, but as Goldni said, it’s LG. They don’t have the most reliable or best quality phones. I’m gonna wait and see on this one.

  10. It seems that Korean tech giants are very good at playing catch-up. Samsung seems to be waiting until 3D market is mature.Sammy is struck by the lukewarm response to 3D TVs.htc loses this time.

  11. sounds like the phone sprint will be announcing very soon ;-)

  12. @atv I got the mt4g without waiting for dual core, and I’m happy with it.something new is always around the corner nowadays, and 3d is mostly a gimmic, so just go with one of these dual core phones that are about to come out

  13. Yeah, I am thinking porn should be fun

  14. This thing looks pretty amazing. I’d love to see a Verizon model. Running stock now. Doubt it will launch with it though.

  15. Well I would finally be able to take 3D pics to view on my 3D monitor. Outside of that though, meh.

  16. The question on 3d in portrait ancient. Landscape is valid.

You know those cards they have that give a 3d effect? They have them on the 3d. BluRay covers a lot. They don’t work in both portrait and landscape so if it’s paralax barrier based screen in think it may work the same and 3d will only work in landscape.

  17. #1 reason for 3D cameras? 3D boobies!

  18. It would be nice if this came to Sprint but it probably won’t happen.

  19. This is all good and well, but sadly it wont be coming to verizon so no go for me :(

  20. The orientation of the cameras absolutely makes a difference. I have the fujifilm 3d camera, and it is designed for landscape. Photos taken in portrait do not work by default. Now, you CAN take the images apart into the separate left-right sides and then re-align them into in the proper orientation manually, but that takes a lot of time. It’s possible that adjustment could be embedded in the software layer of the camera, but I would be surprised. All that said – a nice feature to have on the phone, as long as it doesn’t require much of a tradeoff in non-3D performance.

  21. who cares? 3d is fucking stupid. i didn’t realize we were back in the 80s.

  22. Lol @ JRDroid. This phone look SICK! Now to the epic decision: This or the Atrix 3D. I think phandroid should do a poll! Btw Lg, Moto and even sammy stepped up their game? It’s sad to see Htc laggin so badly.

  23. Atrix 4G** lol

  24. Yeah Keller I was ganna say Atrix 3d…wow didn’t know such a phone was coming out lol. Well I hate to say this and I hope I’m wrong with all these D cores coming out, but I believe this thing is highly likely to have many bug issues…b b b b bugged to the bone bugged to the bone lol…

  25. Lg does not make bad devices. What the hell are you guys talking about?

  26. But why LG? LG make awful, awful hardware

  27. What exactly do they mean by “full 3D” because it’s certainly not the first phone or even Android handset to have an autostereoscopic display. Sharp has had one out here in Japan for months already. I must say the effect is pretty cool though.

  28. People really actually care about 3D on phones? Really? I can’t possibly imagine why, but I see no benefit for me.

  29. I’m with Tony on this one. Recording homemade porn with my cellphone just got a lot more fun sounding!

  30. Unlocked bootloader or not?

  31. @yamiyaiba please tell me it won’t be solo… lol
