Dell Thunder Prototype Gets Extensive Hands-On Treatment

16

Engadget finally said “Enough of the blurrycam crap: get us a Dell Thunder prototype,” and thus came to light this extensive hands-on look at the prototype of the very same Dell Thunder they leaked to the world months ago. Taking a deeper look into the hardware (as the software is pretty much stock Android 1.6, though it’s said Dell will be putting their custom skin on top of this for release), we can confirm the following specs:

  • 8-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
  • 3.7v 1400 mAh battery
  • 1GHz Snapdragon Processor
  • WiFi up to N
  • Dual microphones (possibly for noise-cancellation)
  • Curved glass screen instead of the usual flat panel
  • 4.1-inch display (no word on type or resolution)

Other possible specs include dual-mode radios (essentially making this a world phone) and 512MB of both RAM and ROM as it uses the same Himax-crafted memory as found in the newly released Droid 2. These specs are more or less speculation, though, so we can’t say for sure it’ll ship to market with this stuff (or any of the items listed above as this is still a prototype).

With that, though, we still can’t confirm resolution but it does look to be significantly higher than we’ve seen on phones of this size to date. What do you guys think of the Thunder?

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Bahh, nothing new, 1.6. Urr how about get 2.2

  2. 1.6? What is wrong with these people! It’s a sexy looking phone, but that screen doesn’t look like 4.1 for some reason. Specs sound good. How can you try and compete in the high-end Android line up and not have at least 2.0.

  3. It is a prototype if I read that correctly…

  4. Wow, 14mAh battery. So it will last like 5 minutes?!

  5. 1.6 is clearly just what is running on it at this moment as a place holder.
The fact that it is vanilla should demonstrate that it’s not the final OS/UI.

  6. Nice resolution if they keep it as is.

  7. Will never ever buy a Dell product again. That includes their phone also plus it only have 1.6v.

  8. I would love Dell forever if they would just commit themselves to building great hardware that runs stock-android and commit then commit to their consumers to push out updates as close to day-1 as possible. Is that so hard? Why is there not a single manufacturer in the marketplace that thinks this is a good idea?

  9. There is, they’re called htc and the single phone they make that meets your criteria is the nexus one.

  10. That phone is eight months old, and only came about as a result of heavy involvement directly from Google. I have one, and I love it, but it’s alarming that it seems there will never be another one like it. What happens when I need to buy a new phone?

  11. Looks special

About the mics: I think one is right next to the microUSB, an the other one is clearly on the back side, at the right above the battery. “they just haven’t drilled the holes for them yet” hahaha

And the diagonal grid of dots you see if you hold the Amoled at exactly the right angle and in enough light is normal I think, I see it too on my Nexus One. It’s pretty hard to see, and definitely not disturbing.

  12. This phone looks incredibly sexy.

  13. 1.6 is just stupid.

Why no search button. I use my search button all the time.

  14. It’s not out for months. It won’t ship with 1.6.

  15. That screen looks insanely high res!

  16. i know that it is for at&t but it would be cool to get this unlocked
